A pure “ DIAMOND ”   by touch and hence a “ CHUNI ”
It is said that  BE PROUD OF THE HANDS WHICH BECOMESBLACK EVERYDAY AFTER THE WORK THAT YOU DO.
FOR THAT IS THE SIGN OF THE MOST
VALUABLE MONEY THAT YOU HAVE EARNED FOR THE DAY DO NOT BE ASHAMED TO WORK VERY
HARD FOR THE DAY
It is an adage and also said that  PUTYOUR HANDS TO THE COAL IT BECOMES BLACK . HOWEVER THE DIAMOND COMES FROM THECOAL WHICH IS BLACK AND IF YOU WANT TO TOUCH THE DIAMOND YOU WILL HAVE TO TOUCH THE COAL FIRST WHICH IS BLACK IN COLOUR.
  YOUR TOUCH DETERMINES YOUR POSSESSION
AND FOOTBALL HAD TOUCHED THIS MAN TO POSSESS IT and ITSELF ”

Born on January 15th1938 this man goes on to become the MOLECULAR PHYSICS MASTER’S from the Calcutta University then, goes to represent the Indian University National Football team thereafter ,and by the age of 15 he wasspotted by Mohun Bagan to play for them and he played for them from 1954to 1968 for 15 years in succession without CHARGING even a SINGLE NAYA PAISA
then to offer his PERSPIRATION for  Mohun
Bagan then.

The “ TRINITY ” Of Indian Football , P K Banerjee , Chuni Goswami and Tulsidas Balram
Subimal Goswami by name, and hailing from the CHOTTOGRAM city of East Pakistan
or PURBO-BANGAL then, andbasically a PURE BANGAL bybirth and by characteristic he played for Mohun Bagan all along along hisfootballing career and he later represented Bengal in cricket to guide them to TWO-RANJI Finalsagainst Bombaythen losing on both the occasion but averaging a Sunil Gavaskar or a GundappaVishvanath kind of an average of 64.00Runes per innings in the four RanjiFinals innings that he played against Bombay, twice in the 1969-70 season and
again in the 1971-72 season. He was the Captain on the first occasion forBengal.

First Foray in
Football : He Was Simply Spectacular
.

It was a very raw age and an age when ususally the parentsthen would not send their child to playagainst the big build mens’ .Duringthat age and in that era it was thought and taught that tillyou are 20or 21 you should NOT rub your shoulders against the big burly MEN
for as a KID you would be thrown off the guard. The parents of that era would
NOT allow the childrens to mingle with the Men but the naals of Indian Football
then saw the TREND breaking.

There were FIVEFOOTBALLERS who by the age of FIFTEEN were representing the very HEAVY
WEIGHT
teams of those era as a FOOTBALLER and the names were P K Banerjee
who was playing for Bihar in the Santosh Trophy, Subimal Goswami ie Chuni Goswami for Mohun Bagan , Ram Bahadur Chettri for GorkhaBrigade/Gorkha Rifles and Jarnail Singh for Rajasthan Football Club  and Bengal  and Peter Thangaraj who wasplaying for M E G Madras later in Football . A little later Tulsidas Balram was to join thisbrigade at the age of 17 then.

ACTUALLY THESE WERE THE FIRSTSET OF SPORTSMAN AT THAT ERA WHO DEFIED ALL THE LOGICS AND WENT ON TO PROVETHAT SPORTS DOES NOT DISCRIMINATES BETWEEN THE “ KIDS ” and the “ JAWANS ” THEN.

Taking a clue from it thereafter slowly many a parents started therowing their son’s in the
midst of the pool where there were so called the  “ BURLY - JAWANS ” playing games and sports
and some like Vijay Mehra aged 17 andRamanathan Krishnan aged 16 then came onto the scene of Indian sportswho went on to become the house-hold name in the annals of the Indian GAMES
AND SPORTS.

  “ THE THREE TO SHOW THE  “ PATH ” AND THE  “ TREND ” WERE P K
BANERJEE  , PETER THANGARAJ AND
CHUNIGOSWAMI THEN ”

These FOOTBALLERS whom I have named gave such a  LIFT and a kind of a FACE to Indian Football thenthat India who initially played her First Olympic Football in 1948 qualified in
1952 , 1956, 1960 to play in THREE successive Olympic Footballand were the Champions Of Asiawinning TWO Golds in 1951 and 1962 beside missingthe 1964 Olympic Qualifiers by a whisker and finishing THIRD in the 1970 AsianGames Football.

Chuni Goswami as a Footballer : ADAPTABILTY WAS HIS “ FORTE ”
During that era when India played in the 5-3-2-1 formation Chuni Goswami
started as a Right Winger and he played in that position for a period of two
years.

In 1953 he was actually chosen torepresent the Bengal team for the Santosh Trophy when he was  actually 15 years of age but hechose to represent the Indian University at Rangoon. Many wereconfused by his decision butaccording to him getting a University colour was important as inthe long runhe would have got a job in any Government sector on the basis of that colour.
He was into his B.Sc studies by then at the Calcutta Univeristy and he was too BRILLIANT in his studies.
Chunida rejects an Engineering study offer
He had actually received an offer to pursue his Engineering
studies then from the Shibpur Engineering College on the basis of Sports and
representing the Indian University then , but he refused that offer saying that
DEEP involvement of the EngineeringStudies would take his interest and his time from Football.
Having done so very well for the Indian University team atRangoon where he gave a very pleasing display at the Right Flank of thatUniversity team, he was an automatic choice to lead the CalcuttaUniversity inthe Aushotosh  Muherjee Memorial Football
Games, the supremacy of Univeristy Football I India then. Obviously under his
skippership Calcutta University won the Championship in that year.

His two , international event at Rangoon and the Aushutosh
Mukherjee tournament saw his doors open for a TOUGH and a HIGHERechelon of the game waiting for him and it was during January 1954 when he waswhisked away by Mohun Bagan to play in a tournament at Calicut then . It waslike a PROBATION then forhim. The Mohun Bagan authorities were keen to see him and judge him whether  could he handle the vagaries of the TOUGH and ROUGH club footballand he passed his test in the flying colours. Ofcourse the next was to recruithim in the rolls of the club.
Chuni Goswami “REJECTS ”  a " THOUSAND " RUPEE PER ANNUM
OFFER FROM BAGAN

Parents are alwaysworried about their sons’ and daughters’ not falling to vicious habit to
destroy them and his family members were no exception
.
In that era when he was signed as a PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER for Mohun Bagan, he was awarded apurse of Rs 1,000=00 then bythe Bagani authorities. He REFUSED
taking the money from the Mohun Baganis then .The reason was  THE
LURE OF MONEY COULD PUT HIM AND HIS THINKING IN A VERY WRONG PLACE IN TERMS OF
THINKING AND HE COULD OR THAT COULD SPOIL HIS NORMAL AND CLEAN HABITS. SO AT
THE INSISTENCE OF HIS PARENTS HE REFUSED TAKING ANY MONEY THEN
.

Once done away with the MONEY he DID NOT charge even a SINGLE PENNY from Mohun Bagan
for whom he played from 1954to 1968 when he finally HANGED his FOOTBALLING BOOTS to change it to cricket and what a GLORIOUS ACHIEVEMENT did he everhad in cricket.

First ChangeIn  The Position : Adaptabilty was to himlike the CHAMELON changing the COLOURS

He came under the tutelage of then the GREAT FOOTBALL COACH of India Mr. S A Rahim. Rahim saw him playing from a very CLOSE QUARTER. He spoke to
Chunida saying that IF YOU PLAY UNDERMY COACHING YOU WILL BE PLAYING AS A CENTRAL MIDFIELDER . That is theplace you are BORN for toplay Football.
Pics ::
The Gold Medal Winning Indian Team , Asian Games Djakarta 1962
Knowing fully well that Mr Rahim MEANS “ BUSINESS” he without wasting his time after practicing
for Mohun Bagan whenever bagan did not play it’s game, he during the evening
would go to the nearby field and practice for about an hour playing games with
the locals in the MID-FIELD position and this was a PRACTISE he did it everyday from that day to hislastday of playing football to HORNEhimself as a CENTRAL MID-FIELDERand what a REWARD did he getit. He was ADJUDICATED as theBEST CENTRAL MIDFIELDER I the1962 Asian games where india won the GOLD defeating South Korea by 2-1 in thefinals and at the Pre-Olympic Soccer tournament in 1964 where India won a Silver losing to Iran by 0-1 in the finals.

However for Mohun Bagan he continued to play for them as aRight Winger till 1968 when he finallygave away playing football He couldadapt himself LIKE THE WATER ADAPTING TO THE COLOURS WHEN MIXED WITH IT. Such washis BRILLIANT habit to adapt himself to the various vagaries of football.

Chunida : A “CLASSIC ” example of “ PICTURE-PERFECTION ” Footballer

A footballer generally is supposed to be the RICHEST man in the WORLD to possess the four “ S ” of the game. Speed, Strength, Skill and the Stamina are the ingredient that
makes a SUPER footballer .
Chunida was NEVER afootballer who has that kind of a spped but still he was a speedy footballer.
He could run the 100 metres of the race covering it in 16 seconds but the football needs the speed wherein aforward could complete the 100 metresby 12 second to 13.

Looking at hisspeed Mr S A Rahim advised him to change himself to a CEBTRAL MIDFIELDER and he did that with elan.

Pic::
The Indian Football Team Of 1962 Asian Games that Won The “ GOLD ” in Asian Games Football

Chunida could dribble from one end of the field to the
another with the ball glued at his feet, he could dribble in a space of ONE-SQUARE-FEET without losingthe ball to his opponent ,  he could laya overhead pass to the extent of about 70yards from his position with the ball falling exactly at the feet of his co-player,and he could pierce the field to lay such a ACCURATE PASS that it would appear that the piercing of thatpass is as POINTED and as SHARP as the PIN-POINT of the needle. For that washis accuracy when he played the game.

The Role Of A Central Midfield General ::  Chunida A "T ORPEDEO " Playing in the Central Midfield as a MID-FIELD GENERAL requires the player to HOLD the ball, to make the ROOMS for the CO-PLAYERS to take theirpositions quickly or help them to take on their positions quickly when fallingback and a TAPEREDdistribution where accuracy holds the key. Since he was NOT as speedy as PKdaor Balramda , he was played in the Mid-Field with Yousouf Khan of
Hyderabad Police and Ram Bahadur Chettri in the 1962 Asian Games and THAT WAS THE REASON INDIA WON THAT GOLDIN 1962. He completely HELD India in that tournament and the kind of HOLDINGand DISTRIBUTING the ballpraying it to the either side of the field still is CONSIDERED to be the BEST that one could see hereat Asiain football.  HE WAS THE CAPTAIN OF THAT INDIAN FOOTBALL TEAM.

Chunida takes to Cricket : Nearly makes it to the Indian team

Pic :

Chunida going to bat with Ambar Roy , Ranji Finals Bengal versus Bombay 1969-70

In a SURPRISEcomments after the prize distribution of the medals at the Asian games in 1962
when a scribe asked him what was his next target he replied PLAYING FOR INDIA
IN CRICKET.

Pics-:
The Bengal Ranji Trophy Team 1969-70 led by Chuni Goswami
The ENTIRE Indian football team was SURPRISED. Such was the extent that PKda asked him- KEE RAY      “ YAARKI NAAKI ” which means HELLO ARE YOU JOKING. He replied“ NAA- AAMI CRICKET O JAANI ”which means that NO – I’M WELL VERSEDIN CRICKET. Hearing him it was Prasanto Sinha a member of that 1962Gold Medal winning team asked him – TOR BOYOUSH KOTO which means What is your age to which he replied  JOKINGLY – SONAR KONO BOYESH HOYE NAAwhich means GOLD DO NOT HAVE ANY AGE. That was his CONFIDENCE in himself that
he possessed while deciding about his future and his game.

He continued cricket and football in equal elan thendistributing his time equally in both the games. His hour of GLORY came in the 1966-67 tourof the West Indies at India .

Chunida andSubroto Guha “ INFLICT ” the FIRST defeat of the West-Indies against ANY Indian
Team :: West Indies " SHOCKED " And Gary Sobers Rubs his " EYE'S " in disbelief

The combined East-Zone and the Central Zone were to play theWest-Indies at Indore . ChuniGoswami was selected to play for this team bynone other than Hanumant Singh who ws leading the side then. Salim Durrani initiallywas to play for this team but all of a suddn his wife took to a heavy illnessand he missed out playing this game. The place went to Chuni Goswami
Batting at the lower order at number eight he produced twoblistering innings of 28 in the first and a 27 in the second. The west indieswere bowled out for 102 in the second innings after failing to cross a total of150 plus in the first What was more one would ask me?

WELL- IT WASSUBROTO GUHA WHO CLAIMED SEVEN FOR 25 IN THE FIRST WITH CHUNIGOSWAMI CLAIMINGTHE OTHER THREE AND AGAIN GUHA CLAIMING FOUR IN THE NEXT WITH CHUNI GOSWAMI CLAIMING THE  “ FIVE ” “ IN THE SECOND ”. MIND YOU- HE WAS BOWLING HIS “ MEDIUM ” STUFF  THEN.

He was in the reserves for the last Test at Madras. At the nick of the moment  it was his bank Team
Mate Bishen Singh Bedi who made it and made his debut with Ajit Wadekar at
Madras then and it was a case of SO NEAR AND YET SO FAR for Chunida.

Based on that performance of ELEVEN wickets against the West-Indies Subroto Guha made it
to the Indian team in 1967 to tour the BLIGHTY,the ENGLAND but Chunida couldNOT . Yet he continued toplay for Bengal and East Zone in cricket and he played in TWO Ranji Finals for Bengal against Bombay then and he scored atotal of 256 runs in those FOUR innings of Ranji Finals to averagea SOLID 64.00runs/innings
That was Chunida as a cricketer .He was the CAPTAIN of the Bengal Ranji team in 1969-70 which was the Runners-Up in Ranji Trophy .

Chunida as a TENNIS player : Extra-Ordinary performancein the 1970 Tennis National
The Bengal  SOUTH CLUB TENNISCLUB known as the SOUTH CLUB accorded him a LIFETIME membership for hisvaluable contribution of the game and the service he rendered to football in
1968 after he announced that HE WILL NEVER PLAY FOOTBALL AGAIN.

That was the YEAR when Jarnail Singh, Tulsidas Balram, Ram Bahadur Chettri and P K Banerjee too
announced that THEY were RETIRING from every form of Football. That was the END
of the GOLDEN generation of Indian football.

Chunida when accorded that HONOUR by the SOUTHCLUB of Kolkatta said- THERE
IS NO FUN IN RECEIVING THE HONOUR FROM A SPORTS INSTITUTE WITHOUT GIVING
SOMETHING BACK TO IT .

He took onto to playing Tennis and in that too though for a very short period of time that he played he created a HAVOC  .

1970 : Bengal CREATES a STORM in Indian Tennis

The National All-India Tennis Championship ws held at theSouth Club Court of Calcutta then. The TREMENDOUS“ SURPRISE” of that tourney was the TOP-SEED Vijay Amritraj was OUSTED intheVERYFIRST ROUND in that championship by Narendra Batra of New DelhiMany surprises were in the store then  for the Indian Tennis then. A guy a COOT by the name of GAURAV MISHRA had won the TITLE to become the NATIONAL TENNIS CHAMPION of
India. He was from Saint Xaviers , Calcutta then and was coached by Akhtar Ali
. What was MORE one would ask me ?..? ..!!

WELL- IT WAS CHUNIDA WHO MADE IT TO THE QUARTER FINALS BY DEFEATING ANAND AMRITRAJ IN THE PRE-QUARTERS AND THEN LOSING TO NARENDRA BATRA IN THE QUARTERS.

If it was ONE more step by Chunida,  HE WOULD HAVE BEEN A MEMBER OF THE
INDIAN DAVIS CUP SQUAD BELIEVE ME
. Even after losing in the FIRST round then, the indian
Davis Cup squad to play Ceylon then was PremjitLall, Jaideep Mukherjee, Gaurav Mishra and Vijay Amritraj . Vijay wouldhave been dropped from the squad BELIEVEme if Chunida would have madeit to the semis. In the quarters he had lost ofNarendra Batra in FIVE GRUELLINGsets and that saw him narrowly missing the mark in the Davis Cup Squad.
Chunida as a Banker : Made a mark for him as well
After competing his M.Sc in Molecular Physics Chunida wasoffered a job by the BHABHA ATOMIC RESEARCH CENTRE but he refused. He wanted tobe associated with Football. His help fromthe Mohun Bagani authorities saw himgetting  a job at the State Bank Of India
where he rose an a GREAT HIEGHT in his job  before calling it QUIT in 1999 .

Pics- :
Chuni Goswami receiving the Durand Cup from Sarvapalli Radhakrishna
He  was for a VERY short period in 1993 was the GENERALS PORTS SECRETARY for the Mohun Bagan club. However when he was FIXED for a WRONG charge of SIPHONING THE MONEY, he FOUGHT back to prove himself CLEAN within two months and he GAVE away that spot and the post  and EVER SINCE THEN in 1993 he DID NOT put his feet at the Mohun Bagan club
Chunida aCHEF-DE-MISSION FOR EAST BENGAL

“ HE TO BE HONOURED AGAIN WASCONFERRED A LIFE MEMBERSHIP BY THE EAST BENAGLFOOTBALL CLUB AND WAS THEIRCHEF-DE-MISSION WHEN EAST BENGAL TOURED MAURITIUS TO PLAY SOME MATCHES THERE IN 1993 OR THAT COULD BE EVEN 1995 ”.

For NOT having taken any MONEY fromMohun Bagan  from 1954 to 1968 for
rendering his service to the CLUB, the Baganis, ie the MARINERS  got him a JOB at the State Bank of India, and paid for all the expenses of his SISTERS’ marriage beside POOLING every money for the househe constructed at Kolkatta and that was what he GOT from Mohun Bagan in return before that GRAFT CHARGE against him tookhim away from Mohun Bagan ONCE FOR EVER.

Chunida : A “ARJUNA ” and a “ PADMA ”
For his contribution to the games andspecially for Football he was conferred with the ARJUNA AWARD in the year 1964and was a receipient of the PADMA SHRI in 1984 .
April 30th2020 : Maa LOKHI takes away her DIAMOND
Thursday the April 2020 , well THURSDAY in Bengali is considered to be the LOKHI-POOJO day. That means every Thursday the Bengalis would offer PUJAto Maa Laxmi in their house. Thursday is considered to be the  day of Laxmi Maa and hence the Laxmi Puja in
every house at Bengal and Bengali.
It was that day when MAA-LOKHI ie Goddess Laxmi came to take her DIAMONDof FOOTBALL from us and from this WORLD.
Generally the YAMARAJ comes to take but to this man who was a DIAMOND was taken away by the GODDESS of WEALTH MAA LAXMI on that day and with it COMES and END of a INSTITUTION of Indian Football and an INSTITUTION of GAMES AND SPORTS IN INDIA.
Finally before I end I shall lay down these few infos and some facts about that 1962 Gold Medal winning Asian games Football team-:

I shall hereby putforward the actual scores of the Indian Football teams performance in that
Asian games at 1962 at Djakarta It is illustrated here as under-:

  • RESULTS:
  • Round 1. Group 1. 24-Aug-62: India 0-2 South Korea. ...
  • Semifinal. 01-Sep-62: India 3-2 South Vietnam - Indian Goals: 2xChuni Goswami, Jarnail Singh.
  • Final: 04-Sep-62: India 2-1 South Korea - Indian Goals: P.K. Banerjee, Jarnail Singh.
India started on a very bad note by losing to South Korea by
2-0 but in the next match they defeated Thailand by 4-1. The TRINITY of
P.K.Banerjee , Tulsidas Balram and Chuni Goswami for the FIRST time in their
football career playing together scored a goal each in their match .
P.K.Banerjee in the next match and Tulsidas Balram too
scored against Japan and BECAME the FIRST SET of PLAYERS in the annals of
Indian Football History to score BACK-TO-BACK goals in the match ie an INTERNATIONAL
FOOTBALL MATCH for India .It was P K Banerjee FIRST to do so followed by Balram
Thereafter it was Jairnail Singh who achieved this feat against
the opponent ie against South Vietnam and then in the finals against South
Korea . Chuni Goswami had missed an easy sitter in the finals and if he had
scored that he would also have emulated this feat
It is well over 52 years that we have NOT won a GOLD in the
Asian Games Football and mind you South Korea regularly qualifies for the World
Cup proper in football from the aisan continent but WHERE IS INDIA .
“That Indian team had no fear and was never under pressure despite the odd setbacks. For, it was guided by a coach who knew how to get the best out of his players and remember it was a star-studded line-up which included the likes of P. K. Banerjee, captain Chuni Goswami, T. Balaraman, goalkeeper Peter Thangaraj,”
Infact the team ws - :
India-::
D M K Afzal ,Tulsidas Balram, Pradip Banerjee, Prodyut Burman( Goalkeeper) , O Chandrashekar Menon, Ram Bahadur Chettri, D E Ethiraj, Fortunata A Franco, Arun Ghosh , Chuni Goswami, Yousouf Khan, Arunmainayagam, Jarnail Singh, Trilok Singh, Prasanto Sinha and Peter Thangaraj (Goalkeeper)
That team infact gave Chuni Goswami, P K Banerjee, Tulsidas Balram, Ram Bahadur Chettri, Jarnail Singh, Arun Ghosh and Peter thangaraj as the member of the ALL ASIAN STAR XI squad which was selected after the final and it was ONLY for the FIRST time that tere were AS MANY AS SEVEN INDIAN PLAYERS in a single Asian XI squad.
