ONCE UPON A TIME - THERE WAS CRICKET :: There was “ NO ” Ratna Then

It was during those times when we as a child during those days when FIVE NAYA PAISA would get us a COOKIE or a qualitative chocolates, but that use to be say a FEAST to us during those days. When we would ask our Father for it, he would say - :

GET THE FIRST RANK IN THE CLASS AND THE CHOCLATE WOULD BE YOURS

Well I would explain and make the importance of the same felt in a bright manner but let me fall back to the KHEL-RATNA and the Arjuna Award conferred to the sports personalities for the year 2019 awarded this year.

Eves : rebalancing the GENDER relative generation

I would like to fall back from the Olympics 2016 to till date while I write about the other sports and the cricket since 2011 after India had won that WORLD CUP on the April Fool’s day. First to start with the Olympics.

The curtain was formally rung down on the Rio Olympics on  2016 in the third ie 3rd  week of Sunday precisely on August 21st 2016 if my MEMORY serves me correct. . But not before breaking several glass ceilings. It is not just about the outstanding performance from the women in the Indian contingent (it is rapidly becoming a way of life after India began rebalancing gender relations); neither is it about the god-like ability of Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt to transcend physical barriers and stay on top of their game; not just in one but, incredibly, three Olympics (in the case of Phelps it is even longer).

Instead, from the Indian point of view, it is of the ability of sports, other than cricket (the informal religion binding all Indians with MYST and MYTH surmounting the cascades ), to entertain and obsess us for the last three weeks. Overnight, Dipa Karmakar, gymnast from Tripura; Sakshi Malik, the wrestler from Haryana; P.V. Sindhu, the shuttler from Hyderabad, and Lalita Babar, long-distance runner from Maharashtra, became household names—as big as our much-loved cricket captain, Virat Kohli , though I have NEVER, and NEVER  was I  at anytime,  and NOT a BIG fan of his . .

He performs and gets a KUDOS from me but not that I have been a fan of any a kind of this batsman who actually holds the Indian batting in terms of FULCRUM and it’s necessity.

Women Power:: A “ HUGE ” METAMORPHOSIS

The “ WALK ” does the “ TALK ” :: Is This The End Of Cricket’s “ HEGEMONY ”

This is huge. Tallest in SPORTS cannot be measured and defined that easily but the ladies ever since P T Usha came to the scene from 1978 has turned the scale in favour of these eve’s who WALK rather than the doings that we call it as a TALK and it is their walk that does the talk .  Actually, a defining moment for Indian sports: the beginning of the end of cricket’s hegemony. The politics of sports is being redefined as games with mass following—such as athletics, swimming, tennis, badminton, gymnastics, football, hockey (a comeback, actually) and so on—begin to attract eyeballs.

Unlike cricket, most of these sports are not restricted to a few nations and, hence, a global contest is for real. If indeed this trend does pan out, then Indian sport is set for a major overhaul—with a wider base and global medal winning talent as we have discovered in badminton and wrestling- and it  is inevitable. In a small manner BOXING too shows that faith but the WARES are few and little in boxing

 " SPORTS " Award 2020 for 2019 :: EXTEMPORE – COUTH – " FUBIKI " – GLORIOUS BUT     “ SANE-  A-  DROP ”

 I shall now come back to focus on the award winners of the Khel Ratna and Arjuna award for the year 2019 conferred on 2020. Let me start from cricket.

 PUDDING AND PIE :: THAT MADE US TO CRY

Start looking into the frame after April 1st 2011 and keep looking at it. Count the chickens that were hatched by cricket in the field of World Cup, Champions Trophy, Asian Cricket championship, World T-20                and some of these kind of cricketing games,  ( ofcourse the “ BIKINI PARADISE ” for me and many ? ) and any relative cricket tourney of the shorter formation that is played as the WORLD TOURNEY TITLE . One would be FORCED to sing that rhyme-“ POCKET FULL OF ROSES AND BLOOD COMES OUT OF NOSES ” . For that has been the performances of the Indian crickeers.

Never wanted to BAZOOM on Dhoni but just it serves as an example. That is it . Nothing more to CONCH on it. I similise it on the India – Germany hockey Olympic group match  during the 1984 Olympics. A OPEN-GOAL-MISS by Zafar Iqbal and from there within ONE YEAR Zafar Iqbal was nothing in terms of anything in hockey and class. He was a gone case with nothing left in his suitcase to then give it to Indian Hockey . It took ONE year for Zafar Iqbal to crash him off from that goal miss. In the same wave that night after April 2011  was the GONE-CASE-WITH-NOTHING-AT-SUITCASE for Indian cricket. Dhoni continued till 2016 thereafter and till the last World Cup at London. It was all EMPTY- SHOWCASE for India to show and to see in cricket.

Individual records of many a kind was there for one and the sundry to see that some individual landmarks are being created everyday and all the day for the Indian cricket to JAHVIST doing the prayers at here at India wherein it actually should be done at Israel for them to receive the blessings from the almighty. Unlike Zafar Iqbal, Dhoni could continue because cricketer like Dhoni are made and forced to continue. It is because , ON THEM THEY HAVE THE “ DIME ” AND THE BCCI ALLOWS THEM TO TAKE THEIR OWN “ TIME ”.

From the time past April 2011 the BCCI’s meatcase and the showcase has nothing to show and nothing to boast about. The surprising factor is that the RATNA’S come to them exactly in a manner the way the HEAVEN gets YUDHISTHIR who cuts through the HELL first to reach heaven.

Yes I’m talking about Rohit Sharma . Plainly for all his individual effort India has NOTHING to show for cricket for the last nine years and for all fairness it could have been better if atleast two years the Government could have waited to see India winning atleast ONE World title perhaps the T-20 ( as this is the ONLY BIKINI that the Indian cricket can wear PROUDLY and roam anywhere outside this continent) before awarding that award to Rohit Sharma.

Not that Rohit Sharma’s effort should not be appreciated but then bereft of the titles at the world level in cricket or at the Asian level, conferring that award to Rohit Sharma was like awarding a Doctorate Degree to somebody who has not even gone to the school to start his studies or it could even be exemplified as a HINDU lady going in for her marriage without a HALDI-RASM and without wearing those SHRINGARS the “ SOLAH ” SAJ-DHAJ as we call it. If only the Government could have waited for India assisted by Rohit Sharma and win atleast ONE world title the icing on the cake would have been so better. It was a case of early reward without crossing the path of worthy ward. That was something like a sour drop of lime put into the hot boiling milk and that would be that if one  does that.

If some patience and perseverance was shown in this matter and only if a wait of one to two years could have been done in the case of Rohit Sharma the WORLD would have been pleased if not happy . The kind of a PITIABLE performance that the Indian cricket team has displayed in the international level in the shorter as well as in the mini shorter version of the game,  and the kind of MAULING that we received at the Test matches outside the continent, India and the BCCI does not deserves this award. Even in the case of the TINY-TOTS and the TODDLERS at South Africa the lads were given the COLD-ROTTEN-BUN by the Bangladeshi’s in the final of the junior World Cup .

Now I come to the case of the other award winner of the Khel Ratna that was conferred to Miss Monika Batra ( I guess I have mentioned the name correctly). However before that let me take you back to the Olympics that would be held at Japan.

The Japanese flag was  created during the closing ceremony in the Maracana Sadium at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016. Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, rightly, waved the Olympic flag as Eduardo Paes, Mayor of Rio De Janeiro, and IOC President Thomas Bach applaud during the closing ceremony in the Maracana stadium at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,  to proudly announce that the next Olympics would be held at Tokyo at Japan.

It would be to the hilt and the hill above the hills to differentiate between the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. The Commonwealth games are held once in four years along the time when after these games the Asian Games takes place.

The Commonwealth Games , leave apart the Olympics, it does not compares in any matter to the Asian Games. The only sphere where the Commonwealth Games beat the Olympics and the Asian Games are the middle and the long distance running where the athletes from the African nation do the wizardy in terms of keeping the flames alive . There may be one or maybe another at times where the Commonwealth Games sees some kind of Olympic record broken apart the running in swimming and at times boxing. Swimmers like Ian Thorpe and Shuane Gould were born out of this game to set the pool ablaze in swimming but then it is a one time affair which could be termed as ONCE-IN-A-BLUE-MOON.

The standard of the Table tennis in the Commonwealth games where there is nothing to speak so high about the players participating in this event is ZERO if compared to the standard in the Olympics and the Asian Games , where you have the Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, and the side eats of China competing in these games .

This amiable lady had done good for her by winning the MIXED-DOUBLES title in the Asian Games which cannot be ruled out saying that it was NOT a GOOD credit. Yes it definitely was. But then a little bit of some glorious achievement say like a QUARTER-FINALIST at the Olympics or a Quarter finalist at the World table Tennis championship in the individual event where this also will not be possible to achieve by the Indians in the Singles event, going by the standard of Table Tennis in the World and the Olympics level, and perhaps one or two creditable performance could have filled the heart with a lot of happiness but conferring this award to the lady was a case of something very early.

THESE WERE THE TWO’S THAT COULD HAVE BEEN BAKED AFTER FERMENTATION , but like the COLD CREAM COFFEE it was served early with the quantity of ice being added more  than that it should and that is where the gleam took a little beating or else the others were exemplary winners and the one who chose them in the category of the Arjuna and the other awards deserves all KUDOS

YOU GET UNIMAGINABLE TIMES MORE THAN YOU DESERVE

Again it is NOT to slaughter anybody and in particular Mr M S Dhoni. For on the eve of the conferration of these award I saw on the TV screen Mr Dhoni saying that – WE SHOULD BE AWARDED FOR OUR HARD WORK.

Well YES agreed you should be. However let me ask- HOW DO YOU DEFINE YOUR HARD WORK. No sooner that you FAIL all your hard work goes to the drain and from there to the FRAIL.

If you have a CLEAR VISIBLE EYE with a beautiful vision then, Mr Ranchi-Ka-Maalpua kindly look into the showcase of the BCCI and it’s WARE of the period between 2011 to 2020 for the last NINE years , and it appeared that SIMPLE SIMON was NOT meeting the PIMON at all,  and of it you were the Captain for the FIVE after that APRIL FOOL'S NIGHT on 2011 ,  years till 2016. CAN YOU SEE ANYTHING IN IT. It is an EMPTY “ PROFFER ”  with you all  filled with “ COFFER ”  Better learn to accept that MOST of THE MORE and MORE of the MOST are always served to you cricketers for EVERYTHING and NOTHING . NOTHING for the EVERYTHING that a Prime Minister writes that kind of a FACTITIOUS PENS according you the CITATIONS,   which he wrote to you knowing fully well that everything that he was writing to you in that letter was written by  him for nothing that the cricket did in the last nine years. Yet the MOST that you could give to India in cricket was explained more in that letter by him send to you. That really demonstrates YOU GET UNIMAGINABLE BOUNTIES MANY  TIMES MORE THAN YOU DESERVE .Kindly learn to accept the FACTS plainly and TRULY, Mr M S Dhoni. Your telly and TRULY  if he has said, it is because of the matter of very sad to feel that the Indian cricket has been passing the kind of -UTTERISH RUBBISH in terms of ACHIEVEMENT  since the post April Fool Day of 2011

Now back again to the Summer Olympics of 2021 which would be held at Tokyo.

 The 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro came to an end on Aug. 21 with a closing ceremony celebrating the best of Brazilian culture and music. The 16-day event saw 27 new world records and 91 Olympic records set. The Olympic flag was handed over to Yuriko Koike, the governor of Tokyo, where the 2020 Olympic Games will be held.

Last week, a colleague one of my friend who worked with me at Genisys where I worked for the last time, wrote a piece, on this phenomenon, while reacting to an argument that all other sport is ignored because India won the cricket World Cup in 1983, largely due to the heroics (by taking the spectacular catch of Vivian Richards at a key point in the final)  by its captain Kapil Dev.

I would flip this and argue that the history of sports, other than cricket, would have been less unfavourable, and it also could have been more favourable- if in the following year, in 1984 ,  P.T. Usha, had not lost out on the Olympics bronze medal in the 400m hurdles by a hair’s breath. Even her near success inspired many budding runners, but the impact would have been fundamentally different if she had made it to the winner’s podium.

Breaking a glass ceiling—believing that ‘yes we can’—is one thing, but to convert this into a trend is another. The self-belief of India’s athletes is unbelievable, as it comes against tremendous odds.Even in a place like Tripura where I had the opportunity to visit that place in my life, in a very humble family and that too coming from a place like Tripura, where except studies no one can ever think of sports, and for women, they have to, especially in Haryana, overcome social odds; this is over and above the hoops—lack of infrastructure, callous administrators, poor diet, among a few examples—that athletes have to jump through to become world class. The good news is, albeit slowly, an enabling environment is falling in place.

VEER “ ABHIMANYU’S ”  ARE MADE TO BE BORN BY THE METHOD

With this in mind and sight I would CONGRAJULATE the judiciaries that were on the seats to select the ARJUNA’S and the other award by saying them – “ BUCK UP ” for the “ BUCKS-TO-KEEP-THEM-UP ”  Well done gentleman who selected those winners. ONE-HUNDRED – PERCENT ” above the 100% of marks for selecting all those names who really really and really deserved to be on the receiving front and not on the  receiving end . Endless to say and say again- BUCK UP for the outstanding job done.

It is after so many years we see that the one’s who were conferred with the awards are in the age group of fifteen, sixteen seventeen and eighteen. Veer Abhimanyu was FOURTEEN when he did that on that fateful day before losing his life at the Kurukshetra .  So did VED PRAKASH when he was 14 on that day at the CWG games at Edinborough in 1970 . He laid an example on that day. He did not have anybody to BACK him up after that day. HE STILL HAS “ NOT ” BEEN AWARDED THE Rs 5000=00 THAT WAS PROMISED TO HIM BY Mrs INDIRA GANDHI FOR THAT GOLD THOUGH FIFTY YEARS HAVE ROLLED BY

Those who fall in the age category of  fifteen, sixteen seventeen and eighteen when I see them being conferred with the ARJUNA this year I FEEL that the Government of the day has sown the SEED for reaping the ABHIMANYU’S of the future.

India Slowly Coming Out Of The Clutch Of Cricket :: A “ BOOMING ” sign that I envisage for future.

India is slowly coming out of the clutches of the game of cricket- though very slowly but surely. The media is also not leaving especially the D D Sports channels like media and the TV channels connected to that to see the sports and games really comes out in the open and a stream of talent pour into the system of Indian sports. This is a sign which is belligerent and of course- DOOD-A-DOO. Thanks to the team of D D Sports who are taking every step to give a solidity and a mark of semblance to the games and sports especially those which are stagnated and cushioned at the rural India. We ought to have many more of those effort to rechristen and redefine Indian sports.

Lastly - : what is the marks that can be awarded to the GOI for"choosing "  this year’s SPORTS awardee

Well truly, correctly, appropriately and subjectively  IT IS 85/100 which is an EXCELLENT reward for a HONEST job done and if those TWO awards were chosen properly in the Ratna category it could have been 100/100 and that would have been THE BEST THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED IN THE ANNALS OF CHOOSING THE WINNERS SO PROFOUNDLY
Now coming to that syndrom-GET THE FIRST RANK IN THE CLASS AND THE CHOCLATE WOULD BE YOURS
If only the Government of India had waited for another TWO years before conferring the award to Rohit Sharma and Ms Monika Batra it would have been a world of good  for the sports an for them .
It would have tasted so SWEET just like the  CHOCOLATES " of those days, when for ONE piece of a CHOCOLATE or a single unit of COOKIE to enjoy, WE WERE MADE HARD TO WORK VERY HARD  TO GET A "FIRST" RANK,  and once we came FIRST in the class, we DID NOT HAD TO ASK FOR ANYTHING ,   we  received that FIVE NAYA PAISA  award it simply tasted very very " SWEET "  .
Thanks
Regards

  1. Umm!! Certain points for pondering. Imbibing sports and games into the social physical mental emotional pulse of every individual, nothing worthwhile is there to come out for the tricolour.
