Forest is our wealth

Today everywhere we hear the slogan or we read the signboard mentioning that  - ::

“ GROW FOREST AND SAVE NATION ” .

Day by day we are losing the forest which infact is our NATIONAL WEALTH . In this the most civilized and the modern world man is cutting forests and hunting the animals to satisfy his basic needs. Wood is the chief product of the forest.Woods are used to make furnitures, doors, windows , kitchenwares plywood and many use it as a fuel for the fire. Forests are the main source from woods are obtained and hence the forestation could be arguably understood.

Forest  is a region where abundant and variety of trees are grown , wild animals dwell and thousands of birds lives. The trees protects the soil and makes them very firm .They attract clouds to pour the rain. In the earlier days people use to live in the forests. Those who lived in the vicinity of the forest were using forest products such as the firewood,, timber, and the animal produce. .The extent they were used were very common and were minimum. Teak and sandal wood and rose woods are grown in the forest. The costly teal wood finds it’s use in the making of the furniture , doors and the windows. Ornamental carvings are made out of the woods that are obtained from the forest. .The elephants which yields the Ivory are a source of the income.. Man who understood the multiples use of the wood and the other forest product started cutting the forest at his whims and fancies.

The forest wealth has got reduced for executing the following work-:

A ). Construction of irrigation dams across the river.

B ). Formation of the agricultural land to grow food.

C ). To make innumerable sites to construct the dwelling houses.

D ). To cut off trees to use them in industries.

E ). Construction of hydro electrical and thermal power plants.

Beside all these factors cited here the human being to has become very greedy and he has over the period of  time learned how to use the  animals to exploit them. Hunting the animals has been in practice from the time immemorial .Today hardly we lived so far in our time, we have seen the near extinct and the end of the animals like the Tigers, Lion, Hippopotamus, Rhinoceros ,  just to name a few. Many species of animals and birds have become extinct and most of the birds have disappeared.

The Forest Law And It’s Norm-::

According to the forest law and it’s norm, ONE-THIRD of the geographical area ought to be covered under and as the forest. This policy is not being followed by any states here at India.

Today as on the date the average area that covers the forest in the entire length and the breadth of the country ranges between 16 to 19 % and though the policy of AFFORESTATION has taken up the DEFPRESTATION has not stopped.

Pic :: Causes and the effect of the Forest land scarcity

Eminent environmentalists like Sunderlal Bahuguna, staretd the CHIPKO MOVEMENT  in the country and a revoluitionised steps were taken to stop cutting off the trees .An awareness was created amongst the younger generation, about the protection of the forest.Using wild animal in the circus was in rampant which also played upon the forest but of late we do not see it.

There are some steps taken in terms of the forest cultivation and animal populous but that also has not served a useful progress and means. A lot more is required to be done here in and on this matter though the centre is doing everything possible in this matter.

Some effort over the period of the time has taken it’s shape and certain schemes like the project Tiger has come up in the effect a long time ago to save the Tigers. The “VANA-MAHOTSAV ”  plan is in action and every year we see the trees being planted and in big cities we see that mini-gardens and mini-forest have taken shape as well in terms of some useful tress cultivations to give certain meaning to the forestation and plantations but these are  just a few minimal acts which hardly makes any difference to anything as well.

Pic :: Deforestation and Forest degradation

Tree chopping and tree cutting have continued for one or the other reason.People in the rural area still depend on the forest for their daily use of fuel.Invariably the rural people go to the forest and cut the trees.

Costly woods like the teak, sandal, and the animal products are being taken away from the forest by the unauthorized people and person. .Forest fire whether the natural or intentional will spoil the forest wealth.

Increasing population along with the widespread poverty has generated immense pressure on our national reserve and resource and has led to several degradation.

SThe forest resources are threatened due to the overgrazing in addition to the other forms of overexploitation. Both for the commercial and the household needs. The over exploitation and the loss of habit constitutes a serious threat to the rich biological diversity in the entire country.

The destruction of the forest contributes to erosion of top soil, erratic rainfall and recurring floods. Moreover it is causing acute shortage of firewood and the loss of productivity due to the eroded and the degraded lands.

As per the present report the total forest cover of India is 6,37,297 Square Kilometre which covers  only 19.39% of the total geographical area of the country. We have to grow forest which are our wealth.

A day of realization has come. The task of regenerating the degraded forest and the lands adjoining the forest area and the other protected and ecologically fragile area is being undertaken.  A wide  network of national parks, wild life sanctuaries the project Tiger area, Zoo have contributed toward the conservation of the different species.

HOWEVER - THIS IS JUST A SMALL CHUNK . A LARGE NEEDS TO DE DONE.

Thanks & Regards

  1. Yes, their is a very very urgent need to get afforestation done. High in desires, less in implementing, poor in will to have a good afforestation program inculcated into each citizen.
