Padosan :: 42 years A film that can’t be made in today’s Republic
of Easy “ Offended ” India …. and it connected the South and the North
Today on October 29th 2020 completes the release
of the FILM “ PADOSAN ” to celebrate it's 52nd year , which was ONE OF THE BEST 25 FILMS to be
observed , chosen by the critics which on 1971 in a film festival had selected
the BEST 25 films to be watched or viewed. Amongst the JURY that selected were Mr Satyajit
Ray.
This article was written by me on ONE of the BLOG page on October 29th, 2010 when the film after it's release had completed it's 42nd year. I reproduce the entire article today.
" 42 " is a NUMBER that is an IMPORTANT landmark in the history of the WORLD. It was in 1942 when the QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT had started. It was in 1942 when the ALIIED FORCE got a pact with Netaji Subash Chandra Bose stating that they would join the hands with the AZAD HIND FAUZ to fight the Britishers to oust them from india. It was in 1942 when Japan pounded the Anadaman and Nicobar Island and LOOTED the Island completely to demolish the Britishers from that Island.
1942 saw the TANK- the PATTON TANK invented and created by the Americans which played such a crucial role in the World War-II and it was exactly the year 1942 when America has invented the ATOM-BOMD which........ NO WRITING OF IT......as the writings are still on the WALL of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ...... and today on October 29th 2020 the completion of the 42nd year of the film " PADOSAN " adjudicated as ONE-OF- THE - BEST- 25- FILMS- TO- BE-EVER-WATCHED in 1971 in a world premier film show sees the light of the day.
Padosan actually is a film which was based on a Bengali novel
“ PASHER BADEER MAYE ” which actually means the GIRL FROM THE
NEIGHBOURHOOD . This film in Hindi was directed by Mr Ram Swaroop and produced
by Comedian Mehmood. The film as as many as NINE comedians the exception being
Mr Sunil Dutt who is the lead in the film with Saira Banu who plays the lead
woman in the film.

Padosan simply was a film which was a COMEDIAN WAR with the MUSIC creating it’s magic to win a girl who was a TERRIFIC music lover but was very RAW in it. It infact is a FIGHT between the SHASTRIYA SANGEET which is based on the music that is loved by the SOUTH INDIAN against the changing modern music which are loved by the North Indian and the lady who is sandwiched between the two.
Just listen to the song, and totally focus your attention to the THROWS , ie , the LULLABHOI that Latadi sings ie throws before singing the song. That completely describes about a " BUD " which bathes with the FRESH morning dew- so AFRESH and slowly opens up to complete itself into a TENDER-FRESH-FLOWER .
These kind of a song could and would be sung by the one's who sang the songs of this film. WHAT A RENDITION'S that were created by those who sang in this film.
A “ CULT ” COMEDY FILM WHICH BEATS ANY “ LAUGHTER ” BY DEPTH OF OCEAN AND “ MILES ” OF SKY
As cult comedy films go, Jyoti Swaroop’s Padosan is one of the few in Hindi film
history to never run out of laughs. This is an even more remarkable trophy
because such a movie cannot be made again in today’s Republic of the Easily
Offended, i.e., India. The trademark innocent lunacy of the lovable
film turned 50 this year
Pic :: Scenes of" OVATION " and laughter at the Hall when that film was screened for that selection
With its bare-bones plot about an innocent naïve young man Bhola (Sunil Dutt), who falls in love with his dancer-singer neighbour Bindu (Saira Banu) and wins her over in a not-so-honest but oh-so-charming way, the focus in Padosan is entirely on scene mechanics and individual performances.
Enter comedic giants – Mehmood and singer-star Kishore Kumar.
While Mehmood plays a caricature
of a South Indian man, Kumar plays a pan-chewing caricature of
a Bengali theatre director. Rajinder Krishan’s screenplay creates two
camps – the young man’s groupies and the woman’s groupies.
Of the nine, the most interesting story exists behind the song “Ek Chatur Naar”. Kishore Kumar is
believed to have suggested this one. But it actually comes a 1941 film starring
Kumar’s elder brother and star, Ashok Kumar. In Jhoola, Ashok Kumar delivers a much
slower rendition of the song.
The soundtrack of Padosan was
not just a milestone in the
career of legendary R.D. Burman
but also in Hindi films. A total of nine songs, written by Mr Rajinder Krishan himself, each more
memorable and melodious than the last: The on-the-run breezy screened on Saira
Banu rendering “ Main Chali Main Chali ”, or the
dreamy “ Sharm Aati Hai Magar ”,
or the love-infused melodious “ Kehna
Hai ”. Play them on a Saturday evening even today and you will
find it difficult to turn them off.
The Song Which UNITED the North and the South Indians
“Langde ghode,
Arre dekhi teri chaturayi…”
“…Ye gaali diya ji”
Well these were the words in that song “ EK CHATUR NAAR, KARKAY SHRINGAAR ” and the songs has tose lines which I have
written above.
Basically the ENTIRE SOUTH INDIA is very disciplined
and very SOPHISTICATED. They
never would use any offensive words or any words which would HURT anybody. The
excat opposite is NORTH INDIA where the attitude could be easily termed as VEGABOND and LESS talk about the
SOPHISTICATION the better is is, forget anything about
discipline.
In the song, Mehmood says “ ghoda ” in a way that should’ve
offended every ‘” Madrassi ”’,
but it ended up endearing him
to South Indian audiences. Even today, nobody has gone to court saying
they are offended by Padosan, even though there are plenty of groups who have
petitioned against ethnic jokes. But those were simpler times, as the cliché
goes.
The song was a MIX of the SOUTHERN KARNATIC
MUSIC loaded with some SCENTS of the TAMILIAN MUSIC added into it and the NORTH
INDIAN music which went on to being MIXED
in such a manner that the SOUTH INDIAN for the FIRST time in the ANNALS
of India then, ACCEPTED the
North Indians without any remorse in their life and THIS was the SONG that
created that MAGIC.
Generally during those days the South Indians
would believe the North Indians as the MOST-UNCULTURED SOULS but this song completely DISSOLVED the differences and
the man who did were the TWO-GREAT-SINGERS, Kishore Kumar known as Kishoreda
and Manna Dey known as Mannada.
I’m for the SAKE of the NORTH INDIANS getting
MIXED and DISSOLVED with the SOUTH INDIANS , putting the U Tube of that song
for the people to listen to it and KNOW
HOW A SONG CAN MINGLE THE TWO HEART BURNT AND EACH OTHER HATING COMMUNITY .

In toto and in to , there were NINE songs in this films and ONE-WAS-THE-SMASHER-OF-THE-OTHER .It was very HRAD to tell which one was the BEST. Every song of this film during that era of 1968 went on to create a WONDER of all the WONDER but the MOST that was sung by everybody was the MERAY SAAMNAY WAALI KHIDKI MEIN EK CHAAND KS TUKDA REHTA HAI…… but there at South India it was > Aao, Aao Sawariya, Sawariya which was sung by Manna Dey and this really was the SONG-INVENTION-OF-THAT-YEAR as adjudicated by the HIS MASTER’S VOICE ( HMV) a music selling organization which during those days sold the songs making a SONG TRACK on the RPM sound track.
Pic :: The 45 RPM Sound TrackThe song left a deep and
lasting impact in India’s pop culture – resurfacing again and again in music,
movies and wit.
FIRST EVER FILM WHERE A
SINGER RECORDED THE SCENES “ LIVE ”
This was the
FIRST and the ONLY film
where the songs sung by Kishore Kumar was recorded live at the time when the shots were
screened. Actually Kishoreda as he was known was the HEART of the film.
He sang as many as FIVE songs in this film.
https://youtu.be/S0WPSYFm7iE
Actually it was he who had to act by miming his
lips at every song and that was NOT possible by him because in this film he
kept of changing his modulations and the effect of the sound creation while
singing. This he made it clear to Mehmood while shooting in the films. Mehmood
then took a decision discussing the matter with R.D.Burman and the duo allowed
Kishoreda to screen the song which he sang while acting on it on recording it
in “ LIVE ” .
For some technical reason it was NOT possible
for anybody to screen Kishoreda’s acting based on the background of the
song/music recorded and it was thought of that all the song which Kishoreda had
to move his lips on the same would be screened live. That was done with as many
as SIX camera’s focused on Kishoreda and
WHAT A MAGIC THAT HE CREATED AND PRODEUCED. It belied all the previous
theories that the songs screened on the pais ought to be recorded first and
then it ought to be screened on the artiste’s performing.
“ THAT WAS AN UNIQUE
EXPERIMENTATION ith 100% “ SUCCESS ” recalls Mr
Joa who was the MANAGER
of the STUDIO who saw this with his open eye and who now is based at NEW YORK
as he married a Lady who possessed a US birth citizenship ” . It completely
OPENED a new AVENUE of film making says Joa which broke all the MYTH that surrounded the song
recording and putting it for the screening on the leads in the film.
The EFFECT
and the MAGIC created was SPELLBOUND and a WHIZ of all the WIZARDY .The music provided by
Mr R.D.Burman was something which could be termed as WONDER-OF-WONDERS- BEATING-ALL-THE-MAGIC.
R.D.Burman SOLELY and
INDIVIDUALLY composes the MUSIC with Kishoreda “ GUIDING ” him
This was the FIRST INDIVIDUAL attempt of Mr
R.D.Burman who composed the music of any film for the time time in his life on
a very INDIVIDUAL basis. His Father Mr S.D.Burman had requested Kishoreda to
GUIDE him for the music by putting his inputs wherever needed be as Kishoreda
was a TERRIFIC MUSIC COMPOSER
as well.
It was like a PUPIL getting TRAINED
under the watchful eye of his MASTER
. and it was Kishoreda who put all the
VITAL inputs at every places required, and the RESULT as well as the
EFFECT was simply
unbelievable and it was from here that R.D.Burman solely went on to BECOME a GREAT-GREATER-GREATEST music
composer THANKS to Kishoreda for putting him onto
tat stage.
The entire list of the song of this film which
were ONE-TAJ-MAHAL-CREATED-AFTER-ANOTHER
are illustrated below and NOTHING like it if anybody listens to this
song even now-:
Music
The music of the film was composed by R.D. Burman . The lyrics were
written by Rajendra
Krishan.

Kishore
Kumar's character in the film was inspired by the personality of his uncle,
Dhananjay Banerjee (a classical singer), and music director Khemchand Prakash. The song Ek Chatur Naar was
originally sung in the movie Jhoola by Ashok Kumar.
Of the nine, the most interesting story exists behind the
song “Ek
Chatur Naar”. Kishore Kumar is believed to have suggested this one. But it actually comes a 1941 film
starring Kumar’s elder brother and star, Ashok Kumar. In Jhoola, Ashok Kumar delivers a much slower rendition of the song.
Said Mr Satyajit Ray
about this film when that MOST EVER
TO BE WATCHED 25 FILMS IN THE WORLD WERE
TO BE SELECTED in 1971-
“ Few Hindi films
are recognised by their
voices and sounds. Padosan is that
rare gem in which an inflection here, a change of tone there, is all that it
takes. Mehmood and Kishore Kumar’s performances are an aural artistry of
another kind and there is absolutely no excuse to not hear its
pleasures again and again ” .
In a film where
characters exist only as (endearing) caricatures, and where two veterans
threaten to steal the film in every scene, both Sunil Dutt and Saira Banu are
charming enough to make their presence felt. Minor characters like Bhola’s
uncle and aunt also keep their own space.
Last year, actor Kamal Haasan picked Padosan as one of his 70
favourite Indian films. He had this to say of Mehmood: “When I
went to see Padosan, I went to protest
against it – we had been told it was a film where South Indians were made fun
of.
“ We went in to
agitate, came out smiling, as fans of Mehmood saab, imitating him.”
Let us put our eye into the one’s who acted in
the film. Sunil Dutt is dead. R.D.Burman is no longer with us. Kishoreda left
us on October 13th 1987. When I add on to the list I find so too Mehmood Bhai, Keshto Mukherjee, Raj Kishore,
Aga who acted as Saira Banu’s father in the film, Omprakash who was the
maternal uncle of Sunil Dutt in the film, the lady who acted as Saira’s mother
in the film, to say and infact all the one’s from the A to Z of the films who were
associated in making PADOSAN except the TRIO Lata Mangeshkar, Saira Banu and Asha Bhosle the rest are no more alive.
IT WOULD BE BETTER TO ASK SAIRA BANU
MADAM TO SAY MANY AND MANY A THINGS ABOUT THIS FILM AND IT’S MAKING.
My " ASK " :: WHO SHOULD IT BE ?
My final ASK to the GOVERNMENT of India is-:
I wish to KNOW who ought to be conferred the BHARAT RATNA or the PADMA SHRI.
Those who are EARNING Rs 500 crores per annum by playing those matches where the number of CENTURIES scored is 100 with less than 20% of those knocks winning the matches for india with 90% of the matches FIXED with betting scams or those WHO DISSOLVE ALL THE ILL- FEELINGS AND INTEGRATES AND MIXES THE PEOPLE AND THE COUNTRY INTO ONE BY THEIR MAGIC WHICH MAKES THE PEOPLE WORLD OVER TO LAUGH, LAUGH AND LAUGH AS I have depicted the picture ABOVE .
There is ONE in the film Padosan who is NO MORE now, RICHLY deserves a BHARAT RATNA, and SOME, maybe now DEAD or ALIVE really deserves that " PADMA SHRI "
Well- the " INTELLIGENT " Government has all the INTELLIGENT answer which it answers it " INTELLIGENTLY " at the right moment
I'm SURE Mr Satyajit Ray and Mr Kamal Hasan in that matter were and are NOT the FOOLS to put in their statements as depicted
Well watch the film or listen to the songs on
the U-Tube. However I put some U-Tubes for the people to enjoy the occasion
Lastly - once again :: " INTELLIGENT " Government has all the INTELLIGENT answer which it answers it " INTELLIGENTLY " at the right moment
Well , that is it
Regards and Thanks

Oh super what a great beautiful presentation. This simple movie which on the first day of muhurat puja, the producer must have been flabbergasted at the assembly of all eccentric's for the very first time in a single movie. He must have gone back home thinking he has lost his money..... Now what a legendary status movie has attained never too be matched with. I'm yet to find a Hindi movie buff who has a negative opinion on two Hindi movies, 1-Padosan, 2-Anand.
ReplyDeleteWith all of the wealth technology, can any one produce everyone's evergreen film?? I don't think it is possible ever again till Human exists.
It should be a open challenge to the so called great directors & producers to even imagine of a PADOSAN - 2 😎🙄
ReplyDeleteONE of the irony in making the part 2, would be the absence of the song "Mere Samne wali Kidkee....". For in today's audience pool, wonder how many people have enjoyed a window
life. All are in flat or AC upbringing..... 😀😊
