Akalmand :: That song of Mohammed Rafi that opened the GATE
for many a COMEDIAN film
That was the year 1965 . The Indo Pak war
was just over . It was during the month of October that the infamous comedian
Mr I.S.Johar was full of idea to make a FILM on the Indo-Pak war giving it a
comical twist and rather than hitting the sentiment of the people of Pakistan
and India , he taught it better to give it a sense of comedy involving the
height of laughter that the Pakistani and the Indian can provide to create a war
like situation which would be fought between the villain's of the films and the
comedians. With this intention he created a film which was named as AKALMAND.

The Film Akalmand :: Rafi Sahab and Kishorda open the
FLOODGATE of the comedy film
Akalmand in Hindi is “ One Who Applies Brain For Everything
” .This was a film that
I.S.Johar wanted to make and he made it.The Film was all about the NON-SENSE of
Pakistan to wage a war over India and eventually lose the battle against India
because of it’s unwise decision to evaluate the Indian situation and think that
the MODERN weapon can win the war. In 1965 America had given Pakistan the WORLD
BEST Fighter plane, the SABRE JET and the Patton Tank and with that Pakistan
had taken the victory for granted. It lost to India because of the MENTAL
planning and the brain that the Indian used to outclass Pakistan at every
sector of the war. This is what Mr I.S. Johar portrayed in the entire film.
In the film the villain Mr Sheikh Mukhtar
was portrayed as Pakistani. The Heroine Sonia Sahni whom many would not ever
know and about whom many have never even have seen her acting was potrayed as
KASHMIR. Incidentally Madam Sonia Sahni
who was the Miss India and then a film heroine was from Kashmir and she knew
how to act as a Kashmiri and that is why she was chosen for the film. Her
Father was a Civil Engineer in the Government of Kashmir and her sister Madam
Sundari Sahni was an Air-Hostess who later had married Feroze Khan who
again was a film personality.
The HEROES of the Indo-Pakistan war were
portrayed as I.S.Johar and Kishore Kumar whom we call him as Kishoreda . No
further introduction about the film, please .
The film was full of comedy .In the film
the Heroine’s were abducted by the villain which actually meant that Kashmir
was raided by Pakistan and the two comedians who actually were the heroes of
the movie, I.S.Johar and Kishore Kumar
go and take out the heroine’s from the clutches of the villain's , ie the enemy
and that was Pakistan. This is what the movie was and is all about.
Akalmand- ie the BRAINY was the theme of
the movie which the Indian Army and the defence unit was and it was a message
to the movie goers to apply their mind on a PSYCHOLOGICAL manner and process to
understand the movie as well as the indo-Pak war of 1965. That was the film all
about.
Mohammed Rafi and his song with Kishoreda opened the flood
gate for the COMICAL movies further
Mohammed rafi was s serious personality
when it boiled down to business. However he had a GIFT provided to him by the
almighty. HE WOULD ALWAYS LAUGH AT
ANYTHING OR GRIN AT EVERYBODY HE SAW. That was his USUAL habit of greeting the
people, but when he stood for recording he meant business. However he also would
grin and laugh at anybody to greet him and that was his habit of saying HELLO
to everybody that he made. In this movie there was a song DOH AKALMAND HUEY PHIKARMAND, AB SOCH RAHAY HAI KYA KARNA HAI DILBAR
JAANI.
The reality of that song is THAT
SONG NIETHER HAD ANY HEAD OR ANY TALE AND ANY MEANING ATTACHED TO IT.
He was recording that song with Kishoreda who had a habit of being a MIME to
make everybody laugh. During the time of recording this song , the words of the songs and the lines that Rafi
Sahab would sing or recite would burst him into laughter and looking into that
Kishoreda would make some kind of a face that Rafi Sahab would completely blow
the laugh without any control . The one’s who were in the recording studo , at
first had taken it as a natural habit of Rafi Sahab repeating his act but again
and again the re-recording of the song pulled the hats off their head.
Something was going wrong they felt.
Rafi Sahab actually DID NOT sing any kind
of a COMIC or a song which was fully meant for the comedian, then, and till
then. This kind of a song which was such a MEANINGLESS song with no idea into it
was something new to Rafi Sahab and the entire recording unit which was so stunned by his
habit on that day and his uncontrollable laughing gesture made it very clear
that day that he found himself into a
very unusual situation which was full of laughter.Add to his laugh were the
acts of Kishoreda who was a INFAMOUS comedian star as well and his act in
PADOSAN too would make one to realize that.
Somehow after many a struggle and control
over the laugh, the song was recorded. The film had Dev Anand as a guest star and his comments and commentary before the
start of the film was the added feature of the film. The film was released .It
did not do well in the box office as the Hindi cinema goers would not
understand the PHILOSOPHY that were added to the film and it did not at all do
well in the box – Office but somehow it could break even .That was it.
What made the World Of Hindi cinema
notice was the amount of LAUGH that Rafi Sahab while recording with Mr Kishore
Kumar of that song , had spend and that made ONE to realise that if Rafi Sahab
could laugh so much, the COMEDY of the INDIAN FILM did have a ROOM for
themselves in the Hindi cinema. That added SPICE to the CURRY of the Indian
cinema then and the after thought made many to come up with NICE Comedian film
and there were many comedians who made their LIFE and career through comedy.
Akalmand was the FIRST in that list. Add
to the list were PYAAR KIYE JAA featuring Shashi Kapoor and Kishore Kumar, and
then there was PADOSAN , Johar Mehmood
In Hong-Kong, Johar Mehmood in Goa, DOH DOONI CHAAR, and many more later .
Had it not been the laughs and the burst
of them while recording that song, by Rafi Sahab, perhaps COMEDIAN film and PADOSAN would not
have seen the light of the day .
I have added the clip of the song which is so very old and so fade that the one who watches that would not be able to appreciate it.Also the wordings of the song at places are not proper . That is the reason that I have put the songful version of the U-Tube here for the readers to listen to the song.
THANKS RAFI SAHAB for your LAUGH during
the recording of the film and the song of AKALMAND and if you did not LAUGH
that manner while recording that song WE
WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SEE THE LIKES OF MEHMOOD, JOHHNY WALKER,
RAJENDRANATH, MUKRI, MOHAN CHITI to name
a few and PERHAPS never a FILM like PADOSAN.
For your laugh made the film fraternity
to believe that if a serious minded brain , ie AKALMANI DIMAAG of Mohammed Rafi
can laugh so badly , while singing for a song of a comedian film, there is no reason why the comedian Hindi films would fail if produced and the
REST is a HISTORY .
This article is my humble TRIBUTE to
Mohammed Rafi sahib on his birth anniversary today.
A GREAT MAN, A GREAT SINGER A GREAT HUMAN
BEING AND A GREAT ARTISTE .
PROUD TO CALL HIM A “ APOSTLE” OF PEACE AND A “ EPITOME ” OF HUMANITY.
The one’s of this generation would NOT have heard that song from the FILM “ AKALMAND ” .I put it here for the listeners to listen to it. A COMPLETELY meaningless song BUT IT GOT CARRIED TO THE LIPS OF EVERY INDIAN, TO SING IT FROM KASHMIR TO KANYAKUMARI FROM 1966 TO ABOUT 1972 WITHOUT FAIL.
NOTE- : I would like to add some more lines about the film Akalmand .Till thin please read the same .
That is it.
Well , that is it and That sums it all.
Regards and Thanks
