Pic - :: That SOUVENIER From Ishlauddin Siddique and that VISTING CARD from Muzahir Bhai Bari.
With No Malice To
One And Anybody :: This Is What Hockey India Needs .
Perhaps this would be the last and the end of the article
that I have been writing on Hockey so far in my blog. Where Do I start from.
Before I write so many words and lines on this subject and the article let me make it very clear that what you see on the main picture here- it is the vising card of Mohammed Muzahir Bari, the National Hockey commentator of Pakistan, and on the reverse of that visiting card it is the autobiography of Ishlauddin Siddique the WORLD FAMOUS INSIDE RIGHT of Pakistan and the EMBLEM of Ishlauudin Benefit match which the Pakistan Government and the Pakistan Hockey Federation held in his honour awarding him Rs 25 Lakhs then for his contribution to the Pakistan Hockey Federation then, in the year 1982. I collected it when they gave it to me when I met them in February 1982 at Nagpur .
OK- let me start from that moment when I met the THREE
THINKERS of Pakistani Hockey. The First was Mohammed Muzahir Bari. He was and
perhaps he is the National Commentator
of Pakistan Hockey. He was here at India to comment on the India-Pakistan
Junior Hockey series when there was an Indo-Pak Junior Hockey series held in
1981 where in India Pakistan drew India 2-2 at Bombay, then, lost by 0-1 to
India at Hyderabad beat India by 3-1 at Nagpur and again beat India by 1-0 at
New Delhi and then Beat India by 1-0 in one game at Pakistan and drawing the remaining
at 1-1 at Pakistan wooing India to win the series by 3-1 in the EIGHT match series. Thereafter I
would come to Ishlauudin Siddique and at last to Mr Air Marshal Noor Khan ,
both, and whom I met at Nagpur.
I would also like to mention about a player John Topno who
played for the C.R.P.F then and whom I met during a bus travel from Kamptee to
Nagpur – all the time conversing with him at the bus about Hockey .The remains
would be my experience that I would like to share here at Hockey.
It maybe added here that I played Hockey for my College
team, Hislop College and for the Vidharbha Hockey Colts as well in the All
India Baidyanath Trophy in 1978 where I stopped TWO penalty shots taken by
Zafar Iqbal during the course of the match losing that match by 1-3 to the
Aligarh District Hockey association. Zafar Iqbal is a Civil Engineer by
qualification and he served the Indian Airlines from 1978 to 2016 before
retiring from it’s service.
I shall start with Mohammed Muzahir Bari. A M.Com from the Raipur
ie the Ravi Shankar Shukla University then, he was born , brought up and
groomed at Raipur which has become the Capital of Chattisgarh, and he completed
his studies completing his M.Com from Raipur. He later shifted his base to
Pakistan and he was a Company Finance secretary at the Sukkur Beverages at
Pakistan. He was given the charge of being the National Hockey Commentator of
Pakistan Hockey by the Government of Pakistan. I got to know many a facts about
the Hockey , the World Hockey through him.
The European take
Many Advantages Of the Changing The Rules Of Hockey
It was through Mr Muzahir Bari that I came to know that it
are the European Hockey bodies that completely takes the advantage of changing
all the normal rules of the game in Hockey. The first such came in 1975.After
the World Cup Hockey was won by India in 1975 beating Pakistan. The first HOWL
that the European made was- HOCKEY SHOULD BE PLAYED ON TURF. The reason was
that they advocated that when it rains at times while playing Hockey on the
ground, the field thereafter becomes very bad and untidy to play Hockey. Infact
the World Cup 1973 at Amsterdam, and the world Cup at Kuala Lumpur at Malaysia
in 1975 were halted at many occasion as the rain had interrupted .The case of
India was worst in the Finals of the 1973 World Cup where India led by 2-0 within 19 minutes to lose the
Championship by ;losing to Holland by 4-6 after the tie breaker.
The reason advocated was that rain would not disturb the
game at all on the Astro Turf if at all it rain at all during the match as the Astro
Turf requires a lot of watering to be
done before the match at at the time of interval as well. That would not hinder
the game at all. This was the first VOTE that the Europeans brought into the
game and in the voting the Asian representative lost. The Astro Turf came in then.
Why do the Asian lose, always in the meeting-voting time in
the F.I.H. It is because of the split vote and accumulation of the same. There
are say, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, North Ireland that plays as GREAT
BRITAIN. Each has their w own separate bodies of games and sports and each
plays separately well within their country and within the land of Great
Britain. But they play ONE and as a WHOLE in the Olympics by the name of Great
Britain. However when it comes for voting they vote INDIVIDUALLY and SEPERATELY
and the votes multiplies as well when it becomes FIVE votes in the F.I.H body
from Europe from Great Britain. It was same when East and West Germany , when
they were separate as a nation , voted during these meetings. These additional SEPARATE
votes were the reason for the Asian Body as a whole to continuously lose out to
the Europeans when it came to stop the change of many a rules implemented.
These implementations always suited the Europeans and they completely brought
in many a changes into the game by bringing so many a new rules to the game
which completely suited them and extremely did not suit the Asian Countries at
all and slowly Hockey, the TRADITIONAL Hockey which was the HEART-THROB coupled
with BEAUTY went off from the game and Pakistan and India were left to the
lurch.
From FIRST changing the surface on which it is played, the
Europeans for their suitability changed the art of taking the penalties by
bringing in the DRAG-FLICK, taking off and away the REVERSE FLICK, they brought
in the reverse hit, then they changed and took off the OFF-SIDE and many a
small and some not very small but not very big changes were added to hockey.
The last nail in the coffin that thee
Europeans hit in the coffin of the Asian Hockey was the complete change in the
arena of Goalkeeping that is completely AGAINST the TRADITION of the Asian
Hockey where at first they brought in a change very quickly for the goalkeeper to
completely lie down in the goal to stop those penalty corners taken and
thereafter the drag flick where the goalkeeper has to wear those mask etc to
save his face. These changes absolutely KILLED the Asian Hockey. The Asians are
not used to lie down on the ground in the goal when the goalkeeper has to do that to save the penalty
corners and the Asian s are not adepted to wear those kind of heavy kits and
the mask to wear them to protect the goal being scored. It hampers the movement
of the goalkeeper but it suits the Europeans and the Europeans ever since then
from 1988 at Seoul where Great Britain won the Hockey title after a gap of 64
years, have been consecutively winning the Olympic as well as the world title
since 1994, when Pakistan won it for the last from Asia to keep their title and
the image intact. This actually has taken away all the credits of the Hockey
from Asia.
Ishlauddin and his
view-:
After finishing it from Bari, I spoke to Ishlauddin who
infact was at ONE point of a time, the BEST-INSIDE-RIGHT of Pakistan when the
5-3-2-1 system of Hockey and game was played and the BEST in the WORLD for Pakistan
in that position between the period of 1968 to 1979 when he finally retired
from Hockey after leading Pakistan to their world Cup victory in 1978 against
Holand where trailing Holland by 0-2 in the breather they came back so strongly
to beat them by 3-2 and again he led the Pakistan Hockey team in the finals at
Esanda International World Cup Hockey
where they won that championship beating Holland by 5-2 in the finals or it
could be 4-2 as well .
I spoke to him in length all about to know where does
Pakistan lies ahead of India in Hockey and where does India lies ahead to
them. I WAS SHOCKED BY HIS ANSWER.
The answer completely BROKE ME INTO PIECES. All Ishlauddin had to say was-;
AAPKE MEHERBANI SAY TO HUM HOCKEY MAI MAHARAJA KAA TAAJ PEHNAY HUEY
HAIN AUR MAJA MAAR RAHEY HAIN. This means IT IS YOUR CLEMENCY AND FAVOUR
WHICH YOU DO EVERYTIME FOR US TO BE CROWNED AND WALK LIKE A EMPORER. Without
India’s FAVOUR that we continuously get everytime we PAKISTAN cannot win any
crown.
He very DIPLOMATICALLY and at every POINT of time very
DIPLOMATICALLY so that the orders laid to him by the Pakistani Administration
DID NOT BREAK and that he could put his VIEW-POINTS in a CUNNINGLY but a SEEMINGLY manner , he
put it all which at that point of a time I could not understand as I was a
NOVICE to politics at that time but which I now understand every bit of it when
TODAY, I’M A STRATEGIST FOR B.J.P
as well as R. S . S as a
FREE-LANCER for strategizing their poll’s strategy as well as the NATIONAL
strategy on Economics, Defense, Water and Economic policy as well as many such
strategies. This WE and I do. These many of US coming from the R.S.S. School do
as a FREE LANCE SERVICE to the NATION for the B.J.P to do well .I started this
on a FULL SCALE to do from December 2011 and ever since that I COMPLETELY HAVE UNDERSTOOD THE ESSENCE OF
POLLING AND THE METHOD OF WINNING THE POLLS AS WELL AS THE POLITICS COUPLED
WITH DIPLOMACY THAT I UNDERSTAND NOW. The FIRST such stance that I took to
opine was the RELATION of India with Pakistan in 1999 when Mr Vajapayee took
that BUS to LAHORE in 1999.
At that time when I was listening to Ishlauddin, I was a
NOVICE with NO INTEREST in politics. But today when those words wrangles in my
ears I fully understand about what Ishlauddin had wanted to say all about it.
Ishlauudin was very open to saying that the Indian Hockey
team FIRST , does not select the PERFECT playeers to play in the Internationals
at all. In comparism Pakistan always selects the PERFECT players to play for
their side in the respective position. No matter he added, at times we fail to
win the titles but on most of the occasion we win it because we select all the
PERFECT-PREICSE players to play for us.
In our talks he added that he first was a member of the Pakistani
side which won the 1968 Mexico Olympics. That was the FIRST time he had watched
the Indian Olympic team and the Indian team playing Hockey. There was a MURMUR
in the Pakistani camp about playing India in the finals but no sooner that India
lost it’s opening match to New Zealand
in 1968 and were held to a 1-1 draw against East Germany, the Pakistani camp in
MIND were sure that they would whip India by a score of either 2-1 in the
finals or by 3-1 as well . WHY-WHY THAT FEELING I ASKED, the REPLY was- INDIA
WAS NOT PLAYING, Inam-Ur-Rehman who was the BEST either at the Inside Right
position in the WORLD or at the INSIDE LEFT. Strange a player who was the BEST
while playing in this two position in the WORLD was NOT playing at all for
India in the Olympics, warming the bench.
I was TOTALLY surprised when Ishla Bhai added- MAI KHUD INSIDE RIGHT KHELTA THAA PUR
MAI INAM –UR- REHMAN JAISE KABHIE BHI NAHIN THAA. Meray GALAY MAI DOH-DOH
OLYMPICS GOLD HAI PAR INAM KE PASS KYA MALOOM KYA HAI. It means even I
was playing at the Inside Right position I was NEVER as GOOD as Inam and he was
warming the bench at the Olympics. STRANGE a player who could play so EQUAL and
EFFECTIVELY in the inside right or inside left ands was the BEST in the WORLD
was warming the BENCH at Mexico. No sooner that we noticed that WE IN THE MIND WERE SURE OF A 2-1 OR A 3-1
VICTORY AGAISNT INDIA IF WE PLAYED INFDIA IN THE FIANLS. I have TWO Olympic
Gold pl;aying at that position for Pakistan, HOW MANY HAS INAM who was the
WORLD BEST as we Pakistani thought it about him then. THAT
OPENED MY EYE .
I went onto ask- WHAT ARE THE BACKGROUND OF THESE PAKISTANI’S
WHO ARE PLAYING HOCKEY , AND WHAT ARE THEIR QUALIFICATION ?. I was told by him
that most of the players that represents Pakistan are the one’s whose parents
are either the Sepoys in the Pakistani Army or at the Government Departments of
Pakistan but holding a very LOW post, very very LOW post and many of them are
the one’s whose Father’s ares selling PAANI-PURI, or something on the street in
their THELAS to earn their living. These are the one’s who play Hockey at
Pakistan and no sooner that we find them
are very good at HOCKEY we bring them to our fold and with the kind of a
TRAINING that we impart it to them , which revolves around the NECCESSITY of
the team and MOULD them JUST-FOR-THE-SAKE of the team, we carry on with them.
The others are given some financial aids like some jobs in the railways or in
some organization so that they continue to play Hockey but are NOT considered
good enough to represent Pakistan in Hockey. This is how we move in Pakistan
with our players that comes from the Junior rank and that makes it into the
Senior rank.
HERE IT WAS MY HEAD WENT INTO A WRANGLE,
WRICKLE AND FOR A SPIN.
There it was where those FATHER’S producing SON’S who were
considered to be GOOD to play HOCKEY for Pakistan, were taken into the FOLD for
MOULDING them into a GREAT players. Here
was it that a SHAHID NOOR WHOSE FATER WAS SELLING SAMOSA AT THE STREET OF
BHOPAL AND JALLALUDDIN WHOSE FATHER WAS SELLING RGGS AT THE OPEN STREET OF
BHOPAL WERE NOT GIVEN ANY CHANCES TO PLAY FOR INDIA IN THE FIRST ELEVEN-
BECAUSE THEIR FATHERS WERE SELLING THESE COMMODITIES ACCORDING TO THE INDIN
COACHES >>>>>>>>> OH!!!!! , THE DIFFERENCE IN
THOUGHT.
Thereafter I asked him- HOW
MANY ASTRO TURFS ARE THERE IN PAKISTAN AND WHAT IS ASTRO TURF. Ishla Bhai
explained me EVERYTHING about the ASTRO-TURF and the way it is maintained in
Pakistan. He said me that there are TWO at this present moment in Pakistan and
that these were laid due to the courtest of the Pakistan International Airlines
which has recruited many players from Pakistan that now plays for Pakistan at
present both from the Junior and the Senior rank, beside the Karachi Customs
that under my recommendation recruits them. Unless and until we SEE A
PROBABILITY OF A GOLD MEDAL COMING THROUGH THEM FOR PAKISTAN WE DO NOT RECRUIT
ANY PLAYERS OF A LESS OR LESSOR QUALITY IN THESE TWO TEAMS. That is where we DO
NOT COMPROMISE at all.
Pic :: A letter to me by Mrs Uma Umesh Dhyanchand the DAUGHTER-IN-LAW of Major Dhaynchand .
Here it was ME who was all the TIME thinking all about
CHARANJIT KUMAR PLAYING FOR INDIA AT THE OUTSIDE RIGHT POSITION . STRANGE- I WOULD FEEL AND WAS FEELING when I
heard Ishla Bahi stating me these facts.
WE DO NOT COMPROMISE
ON THE QUALITY OF OUR HOCKEY TO MINGLE IT WITH ABOVE AVERAGE AND SOME AVERAGE.
PERFECTNESS and PRECISION is our KEY of selection and PODIUM - ONE- VICTORY is the SIGHT for us. WE DO NOT THINK ANYTHING
LESS THAN THIS when it comes to Pakistan Hockey. Here it is HOW TO GET THAT CHIEF COMMANDENT’S SON of B.S.F or that DIRECTOR
GENERAL OF PUNJAB POLICE SON INTO THE TEAM SO THAT HE MANAGES A JOB IN THE
PUNJAB GOVERNMENT OR ANY OTHER GOVERNMENT ORGANISATION.

When I asked some more facts about the state of mind that
Pakistani had while playing against india in the Hockey match from 1968 to
about say 1980, he openly said this-:
A0. In the World Cup in the 1971 at Barcelona, infact
EVERYBODY in the WORLD and EVERYBODY at Pakistan and everybody in the Pakistan team
had completely assured themselves that it would be INDIA who would win the Cup.
The reason was Balbir Singh Junior, who was then employed at the Northern
railways, and Shahid Noor as well as Inam-Ur-Rehman . We surely had NO equals
to run on the parallel with them though we had a very strong side that had won
the 1968 Olympics and the 1970 Asian Games and almost it was the same Pakistani
side which was participating in the FIRST WORLD CUP Hockey at Barcelona.
When we landed at Barcelona the first thing we found was
that Balbir Singh Senior was not playing along with Inam-Ur-Rehman for India.
That made us sure by 45% to win the Cup. We were very SCARED of Shahid Noor
playing for India. When we saw the SCORE BOARD and the PLAY GAMR BOARD that
Shahid Noor name did not figure in the list of the players that would play for
India even though he was a member of that team,
WE TOLD TO OURSELF- IF EVEN INDIA SURGES US BY 2-0 AGAINST US WE WOULD
AT ANYTIME LEVEL THE SCORE AND WIN IT BY 3-2. Infact even before the match
started against India in the semis at Barcelona, before the match we DISTRIBUTED
sweets to our fans and we danced BHANGRA celebrating our victory against India.
It happened that way .India led us 1-0 at the breather and we won that by 2-1.
Infact I was going to say Islah Bhai that both the goals
scored by Pakistan against us were FOUL and UNDERCUTTING but as a GUEST and NOT
TO distract him to make him unhappy- I KEPT MUMM to let the matter go.
He was very fortright to say that from 1970 to the 1975 when
India won that World Cup, India always had better players than as compared, but
when it came to win it was Pakistan BECAUSE Pakistan would not compromise on
QUALITY and PICTURE-PERFECTNESS to represent them whereas India would do
that. It was evident in the manner when Inam, Balbir Singh and Shahid Noor kind
of a player were NOT playing or representing India in the International’s and
that would make the THINGS very very easy for us.
India infact everytime that it selected it’s Hockey team
right from 1956, it had several players who were just an average or below
average to play for them. However India somehow managed to win in 1956, 1964
and in 1980 because ONE of them took and played SINGLE-HANDEDLY for India and
somehow the LUCK favoured us.
It happened in 1956 when Balbir Singh Senior played it supported
fully by Shankar Laxman at the goal, in 1964 when SHANKAR LAXMAN singlehandedly
played the GAME of the CENTURY then to deny Pakistan of a victory and at 1980
when Mohammed Shahid single handedly
won that GOLD for India even when SEVEN of the QUALITY Hockey playing
nation including Pakistan were NOT playing at Moscow in the 1980 Olympics.
Pic - :: Mohammed
Shahid in that start of a run where his final goal against Spain gave us the
GOLD
Pic - :: Shankar Laxman saving a DEFINITE goal of a Pakistani Forward who takes a STING at the Goal
So much so that in 1966 after the Asian games Hockey final,
to pay him the GREATEST respect, Brigadier atif brought the entire Pakistani
team to the Indian camp and they encircled Laxman and TOSED him on the AIR to
pay their GREAT respect to that GREATEST-EVER-HOCKEY-GOALKEEPER
born to the WORLD-OF-HOCKEY.
Pic - :: The “ TRUTH ” of the 1964 Olympic Finals where most of the times Indians courtesy Shankar Laxman were saving the goal. As many as SEVEN Indian are seen inside their "D" at the goal.
Another reason why
India did produce a very bad example of playing BAD Hockey and at times winning
and at times losing to Pakistan in the finals was Inam was probably dropped because in those days
the traumas
of “ Partition ” were still “ fresh ” in people’s minds. There was
the feeling that “ Muslim ” players did not give off their best against Pakistan. The
final with Pakistan was inevitable and so Inam was subsequently dropped.
My meeting
With Air Marshal Of Pakistan -::
The Pakistani team, the Junior were at Nagpur to play the
THIRD match of that Indian leg series against India. Pakistan were down by 0-1 against India till
then in that series.A goal by Yadav for India had sunk Pakistan in the dying
minutes of that game.
Came Nagpur and Mr Noor Khan was Nagpur .No sooner that he
landed THERE WAS A PIN DROP SILENCE AT THE PAKISTANI CAMP .It appeared that
SECTION 144 was clamped at the Pakistani camp at and as the Hockey players of Pakistan
were LIPPED tight and it appeared that they had all LOST-THEIR-VOICE. The
ESSENCE of ISLAM-KHARAY-MAI-HAI that we often use to hear while in our School
and College days was evident. I could
feel that.
It was a TWENTY minutes of a session by Mr Noor Khan with
the Pakistani players while I waited for my turn outside to meet him as he had
asked me to wait for twenty minutes then. Excatly after twenty minutes when I
saw the Pakistani players coming out of the meeting it APPEARD that somebody
had spilled the RED-HOT-MOLTEN –IRON on their face. Their face was RED and they
were SHIVERING. Came my chance.
As I met him a bottle of Coca-Cola greeted me. I was asked
whether I had my LUNCH which I somehow managed to duck that . I NEVER WANTED
ANY LUNCH TO BE SERVED as that was against my PRINCIPLE to have it when on a duty for HITAVADA then.
It was a CHANCE of a LIFETIME to talk with that GREAT man
who totally MADE the Pakistani Hockey team to appear what it was appearing and
he took it from the state of decomposition and made it a WORLD-CONQUERING-SIDE
with total DISCIPLINE and ONE-KIND-OF-A-NATIONAL-THOUGHT and that was
TO-WIN-AT-EVERYTHING. It was so much of an education to learn from that man all
about DISCIPLINE and DEDICATION in sports and in any walk of LIGFE.
OI still remember ONE sentence he said me- SIRF EK CHEEJH
JINADAGI MAI AAP UTHA LOH, AUR USPAR SACCHEY DHYAN SAY LAGE RAHO- ALLAH BHI
TUMHARAY SAAMNAY TUMHARAY PAIRON PAR GIR PAADEGA means just choose ONE thing
that you want to do in LIFE and put everything into it SINCERELY with all
DEVOTION and DEICATION along with SACRIFICE that you have to do. Even the
ALMIGHT will fall onto your toe to accept hos defeat.
Pakistan and it’s Hockey reached to it’s NADIR in 1972 when
as many as ELEVEN players were BANNED for LIFE-TIME in 1972 after the Munich
Olympics. “ IT WAS HARD- VERY HARD SAID THAT CHIEF OF PAKISTAN AIR FORCE TO ME”,
very hard to revert back the BAN which we could do THANKS to india as well as
we did receive some SUPPORT from India. That ban was reduced to THREE YEARS
.For those three years we could not do much I international sector but we
started in the right earnest with a complete FOCUS on 1977 as we knew that it
would take atleast FIVE years to be the BEST and EVER BEST in the WORLD.
Two Astro-Turfs laid at Karachi and Lahore by 1977 . Our
players were made to practice which was divided into THREE session. The first
session was to RUN barefoot on the LOOSE sand at the RIVULETS and the RIVER to
strengthen the TOE and the Feet as well as the calf muscles. This we would do
four days a week,
The second session was all for the basics and the trade of
the Hockey like the art of dribbling, the art of passing the ball first time,
the art of cleanly tackling the ball DEAD STOP, the art of taking and saving
the penalty corners. This we would do and make the players to do it for two
hours at a stretch. Specialised players were made to practice the special job as
a specialist or to make them a specialist in that field like running to thwart
the penalty corners, to push the penalty psuh so perfectly, to stip that DEAD
and NEATLY and then to strike it at the goal with different variations and from
different angles. Then came the strokes for which we selected as many as TEN
players out fo the eleven and made them to take about 100 strokes each per
player with the Goalkeper standing there at the goal to stop them.Thereafter it was the
team play which was played for about two hours NON-STOP everytime that the
players practiced. There would be a REST between thse sessions and a COMPLTETE
REST for TWO days per week.On the REST DAY every shortcoming's and every
weaknesses were explained I MINUTES and in DETAILS to everybody to overcome
them.
THE TEAM IS A STAR, NOBODY INDIVIDUALLY IS A “ STAR ” -:
The FIRST thing I made it very CLEAR to one and SUNDRY
playing Hockey in Pakistan is- NO BODY
INDIVIDUALLY IS A STAR. THE PAKISTAN TEAM BECOMES A STAR WHEN ALL THE ELEVEN
COMBINE AS A TEAM TO WIN .
Anybody who THINKS himself as a STAR would be “ KICKED-OUT ” and they perhaps might have to LOOSE their
jobs. Anybody who INDULGES in INDISCIPLINE of any kind and MANNER would be
SACKED from the team immediately, all his BENEFITS and the remains which also
wopuld include the proceeds from ther BENEFIT matches and the compensation form
the Government WOULD-BE-SCRAPPED
for ever. NO-
COMPROMISE-ON-QUALITY-AND-THE DISCIPLINE-AT-ALL, NEVER
The eleven who would play in the FIRST eleven will have to
be EQUAL to the ELEVEN who would wait for their TURN for them to come to the field
and execute it for Pakistan. The FRESH STRENGTH that a SUBSTITUTE would bring
in would have to be EQUAL to the LOSS-OF-STRENGTH by that who is being replaced
by the FRESH LEG and that is what the ENDURANCE and the STAMINA that it had to
be. That is what will make a TEAM and NOT and NEVER the INDIVIDUAL stars.
That was evident when I saw that Pakistani side when it
outbeat India by 3-1 and WHAT A COMBINED TEAM GAME THAT IT PLAYED It was a
TREAT to see them playing that way and in that manner. It was a COMPLETE team
game as compared to the Indian’s who were playing on an individual basis. In
that game when Ishtiaque Ahmed completely BLOCKED Mohammed Nain who till then
wa having a GREAT time on the filed with his SQUEEZING-IN and gap taking
advantage , was completely WIPED AWAY by feet from Ishtiaque on that day in
that game and WHEN he ie Mohammed Naim was done way- IT WAS ONE WAY TRAFFIC BY
PAKISTAN . It was Nain Tahir, Quasim Zia
and Ayaz Mehmood who scored on that day. The REAL WRIST play of TRADITIONAL
Pakistani Hockey was evident when Salim Sherwani their Inside Right made TWO
runs with his wrist TALKING and SINGING those URDU GHAZALS and Pakistan BLEW
away india with those to WIRSTY SWERVES which fetched them TWO goals. The Indians
were NO-MATCH to them on that day inspite of the fact that India was having
Mohammed Naim, Mohinderpal Singh , Sujeet Kumar and S.A.H.Aidi kind of JEWELS
in the side.India totally appeard JADED, and DISORIENTED with no GAME-SENCE at
all to face Pakistan on that day.
Their CHIEF Air Marshal Noor Khan was seated for thar game. During
the interval he JUST glanced at me at the ptress box where I was seated
covering that match for the HITAVADA. Somehow I ACTED in
an manner as if I’m so MUCH concentrated on the game to cover that match
wherein in REALITY I was NOT possessing that kind of a STRENGTH at all to meet
his eye with my own eye. It was a TRANSFORMED and a CLINICAL-PICTURE-PERFECT Pakistani
team which was so different to watch and feel their HEAT.
Coming back to the conversation that I jad it with him at
the C.P.Circuit Guest House at Nagpur, he
plainly told me that during that time every Pakistani player who represented
Pakistan were employed mainly with either the Pakistan International Airlines
or the Karachi Customs and were paid a monthly salaty of Pakistani Rupees
2000=00 per month . There were some who were the GRADUATES in the team who were
paid a little more. THERE WAS NO CHANCE
OF ANY INCREMENT AT ALL UNLESS HE WAS QUALIFIED ENOUGH FOR A RAISE OR HE DID
NOT WIN ANY GOLD FOR PAKISTAN
AT ALL. This was PRIMARILY the reason for Pakistan to win the GOLD-AFTER-GOLDS
from 1978 to 1984 as every player who played for that side and for Pakistan
during that time wanted a RAISE in the salary and a chance for PROMOTION.
He was VERY FRANK enough to say that the Pakistani
Goalkeeper of that team Shahid Ali Khan was PAID only RUPEES TWENTY SEVEN par
day. It was because HE was not qualified at all and that he till then DID NOT
WIN ANY GOLD MEDAL for Pakistan in Hockey. Once he did that HE WOULD FIND
HIMSELF ON THE PAR WITH OTHER’S but then he will have to WIN it and PROVE his
mettle. Only then the ENIFITS come to him. From 1981 when I saw Shahid Ali Khan
on that day till about 1988 Shahid Ali Khan had won FOUR GOLD for Pakistan in
four different tourney and then came the MOMENT- HE WAS THE NATIONAL GOALKEEPER COACH OF
PAKISTAN NATIONAL TEAM AND A PERSONNEL OF PAKISTAN INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES. His
LIFE had changed . From a Rs 27=000 per day he was their NATIONAL HERO with his
life changed for ever.
It was in 1981when the entire Pakistani team players were offered
job after their WORLD CUP win at India. Everybody were asked- a “JOB ” “ OR A “
TOYOTA CAR ” , and except ONE, Hanif Khan who went to lead Pakistan against
India in the 1985 Asia Cup Finals at Dhaka who preferred a TOYOTA CAR the
others were given a JOB by the Pakistani Government courtesy Air Marshal Noor
Khan. That is what the Pakistani team was made out of.
For an act of an indiscipline which Salim Sherwani their
centre forward player did at Malaysia when he KISSED a lady, a ROOM SERVICE ATTENDING personnel , at Malaysia when
the Pakistani team were touring Malaysia to play a series of Hockey matches at
their country, he was IMMEDIATELY SACKED and his
job with the Pakistan International Airlines was taken away without any REMORSE……..
Pakistan at that period of time were moving in the direction where it required them to move with the right kind of a process that needed them to be on the top and they did not not compromise with their style and the system which they played keeping the traditional Asian Style of the game intact. They kept on validating in between the place within their style where they felt that the variation was so necessary. Their game was completely based on the team game with no extra indulgence by anybody on the flair that could be termed as individual. Individual brilliance if at all found a place, it found it for them to score those goals combined and there were no space for anybody to become an individual star. It was the team and it’s standing that everybody was made to play for. That made them outstandingly to be singled as the team worth winning those medals.
This is what India had been since the 1978 World Cup-:

This really signifies and spells out the difference of the
direction that the two countries were moving. Pakistan last won the World Cup
in 1994 under the captainship of Shahbaz Ahmed Khan and there at in that
tournament India under Pargat Singh finished FIFTH.
What is needed by
Hockey India-:
The first thing
that is needed by Hockey India to get into the act is to start the Nehru Cup
Championship which I think is not played at all now. That is a must. That is
one tournament which threw a cluster of young and good players for India.
It is not seen whether an Indian Airlines team exists to
play in these kind of a tournament but these are the teams along with Punjab
Police, B.S.F. and many from the defense and Army that really threw players for
India and the Jawaharlal Nehru is the place where the seeds of the Indian
Hockey were sown. Indian Airlines now does not exists and that is one of the
reason that the players have stopped coming to the forefront. The other teams
exists but it is hard to say that they play Hockey. Without the B.S.F, the
Punjab Police and the other institutional team, HOCKEY WILL NOT SURVIVE AT ALL
IN INDIA.
You may have many and many a Hockey Premier League. It is
just NOT-SO-GOOD to earn money as they earn in the I.P.L .Some booty would be
earned by the players but that will not help. It is a must that institution has
to promote recruiting the players to play Hockey and to make the Indian Hockey
survive. Teams from the railways, Airlines, Petroleum Board, Defense, and some
teams from certain quarter funded by individuals have been and were the cause
and the reason for Hockey India to survive, and that threw in a number of
player. That is how the India Hockey survived. That is the ONLY way out for
Indian Hockey to survive. Unless and until Indian Hockey has the Institutions
serving the purpose I DO NOT SEE THE HOCKEY PLAYERS AND THE INDIAN HOCKEY SURVIVING AT
ALL. THAT IS A MUST.
It is imperative
to know that the Hocky players only SURVIVE in India through these kind of
institution. They play Hockey FIRST to REPRSENT the country and to win ATLEAST
one medal. Then comes the job.
These Hockey players do come from a very ORDINARY background
and most of them are NOT EDUCATED at all to know the vagaries of life. Ever
since Hockey flourished at India, the players playing always had joined ether
the Army or the Police or the Bank of which the Punjab national bank was the
most important one as an institution to provide them with a job and all
security .
There was a time when Manipur threw a lot of Hockey players and
in 1980 they were the Runners-Up in the Junior National Championship. That was
the time when L.Tikken Singh, Neelkamal Singh, Thoiba Singh, Kuljeet Meetai came
up to the scene of Indian Hockey .The Manipur Government later gave it up and
disbanded their Sports Hostel under the SAI for Hockey. The reason was that the
Hockey players were not able to find a job for them. THAT KILLED INDIAN HOCKEY
as thee Manipurians really were tremendous and very ATTRACTIVE Hockey players
that we saw and that India got it then.
If this country does not encourages the Institution at large
with the defense, the Banks and other such sectors to induce Hockey players in
their rank THE FUTURE OF INDIAN HOCKEY WOULD BE A BIG ZERO AND HOCKEY IN INDIA
WILL DIE.
These institution will have to let the players under their
FOLD to play the Indian Hockey League . That they should NOT discourage their
players to play. It is imperative for India to have a Hockey league in the
lines of a professional tourney and the players ought to play in these tourney
beside carrying out with their job.
Similarly the Junior Jawaharlal Nehru Hockey Tournaments for
the School ought to be restarted with only the School Boy’s that should be
allowed to participate in it. This ought to be played on the natural ground.
Better it would be if everytime two or three National School team one from
Europe, one from Pakistan and one either from Asia or Australia ought to be
invited to play in this tourney. That would be the correct process to move ahead
with.
Again there ought to be the All-India Inter University
Hockey tournament that has to take place. These are the THREE most important
Hockey matches and tournament's that has to restart and take the occurrences
immediately within a short spell of time and as soon as possible.
MANAGEMENT AT THE
ZONAL LEVEL
The entire Hockey has to be reshaped and redrawn with as
many as FIVE Zone’s to be selected to catch the youngsters at different places.
There at the East Zone a spotter who has played immense Hockey for India has to
spot the youngster with special emphasis
As I have explained earlier, the spotters ought to go at different
places at West Zone, South Zone, North Zone and Central Zone to select these
Hockey players who would be the juniors or the kids as we say and bring them to
the Zonal School for training them for Hockey.
These Zonal School could be at Ranchi as the Centre for East Zone as the Adivasis are from that area. All the Adivasis playing Hockey at Orissa and Ranchi area can be put into that Zonal School of Hockey which could be termed as East Zone Zonal School for hockey, Ranchi. Similarly there ought to be the same system followed for the other Zone. The West Zone Zonal school could be at Khadki at Pune, the South Zone Zonal School could be at Bangalore, the North Zone could be at Jullundur and the North east Zonal School could be at Manipur at Imphal where all the boy’s playing Hockey at the North Eastern region could be put at Manipur.
The Mode Of selecting
The Buddies To Bring them To These
School’s
We have to be VERY FAITHFULL to ourself to really catch the
BEST of the youngsters playing Hockey at the start of their career to these
schools. The guy on whom you have the eye ought to be a HOCKEY material in all
sense. There will be many instances where one would have to compromise but that
ought to be given a back seat. In India there are examples for example the TATA
FOOTBALL ACADEMY. The SPOTTERS brought the guys who were far off from football
but were the relatives and relations of the spotters. They brought them so that
somehow they learn football. The other facilities provided at the Academy takes
care of many a things that in hindsight these would not have even got them .The
main aim to do all these was that somehow after clearing from the Academy, he
might get a team for the name sake and
play a few matches for the famed club and from there it would be a JOB in the
Railways or in the State Police or in the C.R.P.F or in B.S.F. A lot of them
went that way and football was LOST/This needs to be completely reversed in
terms of HOCKEY.
WHEN YOU ARE BEING SELECTED AT
THESE ACADEMY NOTHING SHORT OF A GOLD IS REQUIRED FROM YOU FIRST IN THE ASIANS,
THEN IN THE COMMOMWEALTH GAMES AND FINALLY IN THE OLYMPICS. That is
it.
THIS IS THE AIM WITH WHICH THE HOCKEY ACADEMY AT HOLLAND,
AUSTRALIA, GERMANY AND PAKISTAN RUNS WITH AND THAT IS WHAT WE HAVE TO ALSO KEEP
IN MIND
WE INDIANS- right from the time of Prithiviraj Chauhan we
have a HABIT- “ SELL OURSELF ” AND “ COMPROMISE ” WITH THE
CONSCIENCE.
That is the point and that was the occasion from where we
became a SLAVE.It was December 12th 1191 that we became a slave and
that continued for about August 15th 1947 roughly for 756 years.
ONLY FOOLS CAN AFFORD TO BE THAT and we are a COUNTRY of 135 CRORES – 543 MINUS
– 5 FAMILY- FOOLS that resides here at INDIA and I’M THE “ GREATEST ” OF THEM .What
we possess is a PEANUT and we think that we have GOT everything in our life.
That is FOLLOISHNESS to say but that is
what we are BORN. We are FOOLS !!.
If we compromise on the QUALITY
for the sake of some benefits- THE OLD-GOLD DAYS OG INDIAN HOCKEY WILL
NEVER COME BACK AT ALL- NEVER.
These players ought to be selected by the spotters from-:
1). Watching them at the Jawaharlal Junior School Tournament
played at New Delhi by a highly extremely spotters like Aslam Sher Khan, Ashok Kumar,
Ajitpal Singh, V.J.Phillips , kind of Hockey players rather than
Dilip Tirkey, Dhanraj Pillay , Sardara Singh to name them…… We missed a GLORIOUS
opportunity by totally neglecting MICHAEL KINDO to utilize him to spot the talent at Jharkhand and Orissa
who play HOCKEY at these places to win that KHASIA on the Sunday. Michael could
have given us many , many and many good BUDS that could have been translated
into the flowers in the time to come.
2). The spotters would have to go from places to places
within their zone where Hockey is played to bring these lads who do have a real
potential of becoming a very good hockey players. These have to be caught, abd
brought at the correct time to the academy for training and putting them to the
correct places.
3). A National Sub-Junior Hockey tournament and a National
Junior Hockey tournament which are NEVER and NOT played at all now has to be
put into the place soon. I remember the year 1972 and 1976. In 1972 the
National Junior threw Aslam Sher Khan and Zahid Noor to Indian Hockey and in
1976 when Bombay beat Bihar in the finals we saw M.M.Somayya, Joaquim Carvalho,
and Dung-Dung, Gopal Bhengra from Bihar emerging
out. These are the GOLD MEDALLIST of Indian Hockey in the Olympics. STRANGE- THE TWO TOURNEY NOW ARE NEVER PLAYED
AT ALL. How can you expect to get the
toddlers who have HOCKEY in them to play Hockey for India at all , if you do
not have the process to bring them in to play Hockey at all for India.
3). Find out the Schools where the Hockey game is played and
the district that conducts INTER-SCHOOL Hockey within the Zone. Visit the
places and watch the guys playing Hockey. Bring the outstanding players to the
academy and start imparting the training that could make them a good Hockey
players.
PRECISE – TARGET
Target a point to achieve that standard. For example say the
ranchi Hockey Zone School. These adivasis’s make a tremendous DEFENDERS, Train
them in the manner that you get at least TWO solid defenders to defend at the
left , two solid defenders to defend at the right and two solid defenders to
convert the penalty corners. This academy to say id a East Zone Hockey School specializing
in producing STO:LID – SOLID defenders.
Similarly the North Zone Hockey School specializes in producing SOLID-STOLID
penalty Corners specialists. Most of the penalty corners specialist of India
were AND have been the Sardarji’s. These Sardars are strong, bodily built very
strong to play HARD HOCKEY.This ought to be mixed with the PENALTY CORNERS
taking and converting these corners into the goal. That is how the Zonal School
ought to specialize in ONE particular arena. Now say the Central Zone Hockey
School which is located at say Lucknow. This is the Uttar Pradesh which has
produced players like Ali Zafar, Zafar, K.D.Singh Babu, Major Dhyanchand,
Mohammed Shahid to cite as an example. These were the CLASSES and OVER CLASS of
forwards. The players of UP, and the players that comes out from the M.P. and
Maharashtra belt mostly become WORLD-FAMOUS FORWARDS. 80% of the famed Indian
Forwards have come out from this region that played Hockey. Hence this Hockey
School of the I.H.F ought to specialize on producing that kind of forwards.
REQUIREMENT
The concept of the requirement is the must.
If the forward playing the modern hockey requires a bit of
dribbling, the focus has to be on that to get and produce the dribblers. If the
half line needs to distribute the ball correctly to the flanks the focus ought
to be on that. COMPLETE team game coupled with the area of specialization to
the players ought to be the requirement and the focus ought to be on it. This
is how the players and the boy’s ought to come and this is what is going to
make the team as a COMPLETE team.
Talking to Air Marshal Noor Khan and Ishlauddin this is what
I could understand Pakistan was doing to build it’s Hockey players that
produced that kind of a result between 1978 to 1984 for a period of six years .
Infact Ishlauddin was saying me that India has such a terrific players who do
not play for India but are even better than some that platys for Pakistan. He
saw some Indian players playing for Indian Airlines against the Pakistan Airlines
at Bombay in the Bombay Gold Cup. He was referring to S.A.H. Abdi who he said was the BEST-IN-THE-BUSINESS to stop the
penalty corners pust to DEAD. So many, many and Many a GOALS were scored by the
combo of Mohinderpal Singh and S.A.H.Abdi for Indian Airlines. Infact in his
entire career Mohinder Pal Singh had scored about 500 goals for himself- 90 for
india and 410 for Indian Airlines, but never did he get a S.A.H.Abdi to play at
all for India. Inspite of possessing such a huge talent and such a huge Hockey
in him- after all he was coached by K.D.Singh Babu at the Sports Hostel
Lucknow, HE DID NOT GET A CHANCE TO PLAY FOR INDIA. Had he got tham Mohinderpal
Singh would have finished with 125 plus for India and perhaps India could have
added atleast one or two more medals in Hockey between 1883 to 1988 .That was
INDIA’S LOSS but AIRLINES GAIN.
Virender Bahadur Singh and Mohinderpal Singh were the TALK
OF THE LIPS at India between 1981 to 1988
. IT WAS BECAUSE OF S.A.H ABDI WHO WAS STOPPING THE BALL DEAD AND
THESE DUO OF INDIAN AIRLINES WERE
MURDERING THE OPPONENTS and the Airlines
authorities were always saying- BHAI HAMARE PASS AUR JAGAH NAHI HAI TROPHY
RAKHNE KOH which means that BROTHERS, WE ARE SHORT OF SPACE TO ACCOMMODATE THESE
TROPHIES at our Head Quarters.
The Asian Junior Hockey was played at New Delhi in
1988.pakistan won that championship beating South Korea by 5-2 in the finals. Shahbaz
Ahmed was leading Pakistan. I once again mer Islauddin at the stadium and was
speaking to him. About India in that tournament, he just said to me- ATIF IDRIS KOH CHECK KARO.
Joh HAMARA
SHAHBAZ HAI, WHO AAPKA ATIF HAI. It means keep a tab on Atif, he is
to India what Shahbaz is to Pakistan. Shahbaz won that World Cup for Pakistan in 1994 leading them. CAN I ASK-
WHERE IS ATIF. He was with Indian Airlines, that much I know. Atif Idris was playing for India in that
Junior Asia Cup, was adjudicated as the
BEST in the tournament. He was COACHED by Mohammed Shahid at Varanasi as Atif
was from Varanasi. STRANGE- HOCKEY
INDIA DID NOT SELECT ATIF IDRIS AT ALL TO PLAY FOR INDIA WHEREAS BOTH MOHAMMED
SHAHID ONCE AND THERE, ISHLAUDDIN WERE SAYING THAT HE SHOULD BE AT THE SENIOR
TEAM.
ATIF IDRIS WHAT I
SAW WAS A XEROX COPY OF MOHAMMED
SHAHID, and not playing him was LOSS-OF-INDIA-AND-INDIAN-HOCKEY
. This mentality of KILLING the players in India is not new. However ,
has come now, the time to KILL out attitude to SELECT the AVERAGE and HOPE to
win the GOLD at Internationals.
YOU CANNOT GET A CAKE
IF YOU USE THE SHITS, FOR THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO USE “ MAIDA ” and not the “ FLOUR ” .
Another focus on the requirement ought to be the necessity on
the individual skill to the extent that is needed for the moment but NOT FOR
ALL THE OCASSION. No doubt ASHOK KUMAR and MWRWYN FERNANDES were such a GRACE
and CLASS to watch when they were with the ball. Both were so accurate that ask
them to make a POINT of the head of an ALPIN and then take the ball over I,
they would do it with such a precision
BUT THEY WERE TOO INDIVIDUALISTIC AND HANGED WITH THE BALL TOO MUCH On
many an occasion that spoiled the moves. This habit of being INDIVIDUALISTIC is
what KILLS the MOVES and ultimately the TEAM.
Pakistan had many many and many such dribblers in Asad
Mallik, Khalid Mehmood, Abdul Rashid Junior, Ishlauddin, Shahnaz Sheikh,
Samiullah Khan, Hasan Sardar, Mohammed Ishtiaque Ahmed and Shahbaz Ahmed,
however their COACH would see that they DID NOT HANG TOO MUCH WITH THE BALL and
if they did that he would immediately replace the player. Hasan Sardar in the
Esanda World Cup international during his formative stage in that tourney was replaced as many a five
times in that touney while playing. The reason was HE
WAS HANGING WITH THE BALL TO MUCH. This habit of individualistic
attitude ought to be warded off right from the moment the boys are trained from
the stage where they start. Afterwards it becomes a habit and that mars the
process and the progress of the team. Ashok and Merwyn were to individualistic
at times .That was not good though BOTH
OF THEM WERE JEWEL AND A WORLD CLASS ACT WHEN IT CME TO SEE THE CLASS AND MAGIC
OF DRIBBLING. Mohammed Shahis was not in that manner but he was ABOVE all in the
matter of BALL-CONTROL-DRIBBLING. WHAT A “ MAGIC ” WAS HE !!. … That
again was the TRAINING and the COACHING that was imparted to him by K.D.Singh
Babu at the Sports Hostel at Lucknow from 1976 to 1978. That is what is coaching.
The concept of the FIRST-TIME-CLEARANCE
and FIRST – TIME-PASSING does not ARISE it seems in
Indian Hockey. If that was there INDIA
WOULD HAVE SQUARED THE MATCH AGAINST PAKISTAN EVEN against AFTER TRAILING BY
0-2 GAIANST PAKISTAN AT MUNICH IN 1972 AND COULD HAVE BEATEN HOLLAND BY 3-2 IN
THE WORLD CUP 1973.The reason was most of the Indians hanged too
much with the ball rather than the FIRST-TIME-PASS and FIRST TIME CLEARANCE.
That ultimately scrapped India by a goal within that 70 minutes of play. That first
time clearance which was not done by Surjit Singh made India to concede the
second goal against Holland in 1973 .That was something that made India to lose that finals.
THESE ARE THE THINGS ON WHICH THE TRAINING AND
COACHING OUGHT TO BE MADE AND IMPARTED.Only this would make a TEAM and NEVER
the INDIVIDUALS. That is what Air Marshal Noor Khan was telling me on
21-02-1982 at Nagpur, the day I had met him at Nagpur and the day when Pakistan
whipped India by 3-1 to square the series after being beaten by 0-1 at
Hyderabad. That was in 1981. Again in 1986 Pakistan was whipped by 6-3 with Mohammed Shahid scoring
TWO-UNBELIEVABLE goals for
India in that match .But it was a Test series between these two teams and NOT
an International tourney. Afterwards when the match was over the Pakistani
Manager of that squad who was a HIGH-FLY Army Officer said- YOUR
MOHAMMED SHAHID IS A JEWEL OF HARD WORK OF SO MANY A YEARS BUT THEN IT IS THE TITLES WHICH MATTER
FOR PAKISTAN AND NOT A SERIES LOSS. For every series that Pakistan
was losing to India it was winning the GOLDS and the MEDALS for them placing
them on a HIGHER scale as compared, and THAT IS WHAT THE MINDSET OUGHT TO BE
.
We have to be VERY FAITHFULL to ourself to really catch the
BEST of the youngsters playing Hockey at the start of their career to these

THESE ARE THE THINGS ON WHICH THE TRAINING AND
COACHING OUGHT TO BE MADE AND IMPARTED. Only this would make a TEAM and NEVER
the INDIVIDUALS. That is what Air Marshal Noor Khan was telling me on
21-02-1982 at Nagpur, the day I had met him at Nagpur and the day when Pakistan
whipped India by 3-1 to square the series after being beaten by 0-1 at
Hyderabad. That was in 1981. Again in 1986 at Hyderabad , Pakistan was whipped by 6-3 with Mohammed Shahid scoring
For every series that Pakistan
was losing to India it was winning the GOLDS and the MEDALS for them placing
them on a HIGHER scale as compared, and THAT IS WHAT THE MINDSET OUGHT TO BE
.
What I really want
to say is – MOULD THE TEAM AS PER THE REQUIREMENT OF THE TEAM.
Develop all the ingredients of Hockey and inject those into
the players but see to it that those individual brilliance is used just for and
till the moment that is needs to be used. Even in my playing days for Hislop
College at Nagpur from 1976 to 1978 in Hockey, there was a player by the name
of Raju Joseph who was a brilliant Hockey player but was very individualistic .
I had dropped him for two matches asking our Chief Coach, Mr Rammu Trivedi to
drop him as I found him to be engaging too
much with the ball hanging and destroying the moves . The result was we DID NOT
BEAT our opponent by a margin of 5-0 or 6-0 but we won it by 2-0 and 2-0 .That
was enough It served our purpose to amass FOUR valuable points rather than an
extra of four or five goals. TEAM
GAME WIND A GOLD AND NOT THE INDIVIDUAL BRILLIANCE .
Raju Joseph wuld have won a PLACE in the newspaper of the
HITAVADA and NAGPUR TIMES with those EXTRA FOUR OR FIVE GOALS but what was
needed was the TROPHY and that we won it.That was MY-THOUGHT-PROCESS. It did not affect my PERSONAL relationship with Raju
Joseph at all. Infact even after those moment, Raju was a very DEAR friend to me .
Inter- Zonal –
Championship
It is very necessary that these Zone’s School of Hockey excellence,
once if the I.H.F formed it ought to play between them the INTER-
ZONAL-CHAMPIONSHIP and a team of I.H.F School of training ought to
be formed which should be allowed to play in the Junior National as I.H.F
Buddies XI and also in the senior. Exposing them to the higher grades and
learning from it would be an added lesson and after these comes out from the
academy a TAB should be kept on them about their progress. This is
what the School of Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Pakistan and Germany do. They
watch the performance very carefully and put them on the points and whenever necessary,
they fall back to these to bring them back again for the training and use them effectively
as an replacement for their Hockey . In India this is NOT done at all. NO
BODY CARES FOR ANYBODY and this is the reason our stalwarts in any
game go to HELL . This is a BANE
.
HUMANISM THAT
WOULD ENRICH HOCKEY
It is essential that every body who is in these kind of
academy ought to be imparted the necessary education. Every Zone ought to have
them clubbed with a GOOD SCHOOL and a GOOD COLLEGE so that after the training
session these boy’s are put into the School and the College to atleast study
and obtain or get a DEGREE for them. I have been a FRIEND to many many and many
a Hockey players and football players. THE MOST DETERRENT FACTOR IS THEY ARE
UNEDUCATED AND ARE FOUND IN GUTTERS WHEN THEY FACE IMPEDIMENT AND HORROR
HOUNDING THEM IN THEIR LIFE.
It is necessary that these players are given a chance to
develop their individual TRAITS that would make them to FIGHT and SURVIVE for
themselves and FEND for themselves when the HORROR of LIFE strikes them. We
have seen V.P.Sathyan committing suicide. He was a FOOTBALLER. We have seen K.D.Singh Babu doing that – but that
was for a different reason . We have
seen Mohinder Singh doing it. Education and a knowledge of leading the life
after the playing days are over is a MUST in terms of necessity . NO BODY HELPS
ANYBODY. ONE OUGHT TO AND ONE HAS TO FIGHT FOR HIS SURVIVAL. ONLY A BASIC
EDUCATION WILL NOT HELP. SPECIALISATION IN THIS WORLD HELPS BUT THAT ALSO IS
NOT THAT GOOD AS WELL TO SURVIVE. Your EXPERIENCE and the TACT to get away from
the things DOES. This is what is needed to be imparted and the one’s who are
imbibed and egged on with those quality are the one’s who survives. Many go to
the hell if they are not blessed with that a kind of the SEVENTH sense that
some LIONS and ELEPHANTS possesses .This is what is to be imparted as a SENSE
at these academies for these boy’s that would come from the corners of the
villages in terms of a Adivasi or a Punjabi or a Muslim that would play Hockey
for India.
AGAIN- IF

Partition is DEAD now. It is 74 years that it is going to
be, that India got separated from Pakistan. Those Pakistani , Samiullah Khan

who was raised at India but then thereafter breeded at Pakistan. If they can
CHOOSE these Indian ladies to breed their future generation THESE MUSLIM WHO

what not. If their sons or the daughters are GEMS of hockey they are because
they made themselves as such. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO UNDER ESTIMATE THEM AND

The “ ESSENSE ” and the “ ROOT
” of what I ought to say and write - ::
What I wish to actually say and write are the following-:
1). The CHANGES right from the step of choosing a player and
selecting him to train him into a Hockey player has to be done from the level
of the Mofussil, Villages , and has to end in the towns and cities. THE BEST
would come from the WORST where there are TALENTS that is lying dead. That
needs to be revived.
2). The training has to be on a specialized lines . Specific
players ought to be built for the specific positions. The examples of it are
Bob Bouwmann, Paul Litjens, Ties Kruize,
all from Holland, Stroeder, Fisher and
Blocher, all from Germany , Charlesworth
and Terry walsh from Australia and a heap of Pakistani like Shahbaz Ahmed or
Hasan sardar. These are the examples of SPECIFIN poition specialist and Hockey India
has to do that.
3). Separately , looking into the place that the players
have come from, they have to be built as the areas that they come from, they
imbibe that kind of a quality, and those quality ought to be ingrained and
concretely imparted to make them a SUPER-SPECIALIST in that area of the
game BUT, then the other areas of
acts in terms of being special that BUILDS and MAKES a team to play a team game
ought to be imparted as such and that makes the team.
4). It is the TEAM GAME that has to be focused upon and that
ought to be built. Individual brilliance is an EXAMPLE of HOW SHAHBAZ AHNED
PLAYED THAT LAST FIVE MINUTES AT NEW DELHI WHEN PAKISTAN DEFEATED SOUTH KOREA
BY 5-2 TO WIN THAT TITLE IN THE JUNIOR ASIA CUP HOCKEY. Individual brilliance
is NOT INDIVIDUAL GAME BUT A GAME THAT HELPS
THE TEAM TO WIN AT ANY COST AND THAT IS SHARED BY THE TEAM MEMBERS.
5). The notion of playing the below average or the just an
average ought to be given up fast and very soon . The belief that the ONE’S
WHO ARE CONNECTED TO THE PARTITION WOULD NOT GIVE HIS BEST AGAINST PAKISTAN
OUGHT TO BE WARDED OFF. There are human being, in India coming from a COMMUNITY which believes in
reading the HOLY-QUARAN for FIVE times a day which DOES NOT
BELIEVES IN PAKISTAN OR IT’S EXISTENCE AT ALL . By doubting their INTEGRITY for
India we ONLY are saying it to the world- SEE, THERE CANNOT BE A “ BLOODY- FOOLS
” better than us. They may HATE
the R.S.S
or the B.J.P or me as I come from that School, but they DO NOT HATE
INDIA , I can safely say and vouch for them.
6). Conducting the games of Hockey and the matches in the
School and the University or the College
level is a MUST now. That is
to be done as quickly as possible.
Without it HOCKEY-INDIA
will NOT grow at all.
7). Imparting education side by side to these buddies when
they get an admission to these Zonal Hockey School of the I.H.F also ought to
go sde by side.
Not all the players emerging out will go to play for India.
Some might be GOOD not enough to represent India. A proper education along with
the certificates of playing at the nationals and at the University Games will
help them to get a job for themselves and that is a MUST that ought to be borne
in the mind.
Some of the OLD TOURNEY, like the BEIGHTON CUP, the All
India Gold Cup Bombay, the Jawaharlal Nehru Cup, the Murugappa Gold Cup,
Chennai, has to be revived at any cost. Atleast there should be FOUR tournament
played at the FOUR Zonal centres every year, and a WILLS TROPHY for the FIVE
ZONES of Indian Hockey, EAST,
WEST, NORTH, SOUTH, AND CENTRAL that ought to play the game for
WILLS TROPHY. The WILLS were the sponsor of this TROPHY for HOCKEY INDIA and
the I.H.F has to approach the I.T.C , ie
the Indian Tobacco Company to once again come forward to revieve the CUP and
the tournament. THAT WILL BE A BLESSING IN DISGUISE FOR INDIAN HOCKEY.
9). The Rangaswamy Cup, the symbol of SUPREMACY for Indian Hockey has to start as well. That ought to include the STATES either as a WHOLE and also as a CITY to participate, for example Maharashtra and Bombay use to participate separately and that trend should continue. Same as Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab use to participate separately and that TREND should continue. with the All India Railways, The SERVICES, kind of a team to play in it. The Indian Airlines DOES NOT EXISTS at all. THAT IS WHY INDIAN HOCKEY HAS GONE TO
8). Some

DIVINE IT WOULD BE FOR INDIAN HOCKEY.
What Needs To Be
Done By India To Upscale ASIAN HOCKEY so that It Updates It’s Own Hockey
Pic :: Mrs Indira Gandhi completely "IMMERSED ",glued to the " BEAUTY " of World Cup
We need to learn
and we need to accept. Pakistan and Germany did that as did Australia and we
have to do. Pakistan in this case was an
example and an example for emulation and evaluation.
A good or the BEST of all the BEST thing as an example ought to be always appreciated and it is the DUTY of a WISE HUMAN BEING to pick up the BEST of the POINTS even if the ENEMY is the WORST that one could have and I thereby pick the example of Pakistan to BUILD and revive Indian Hockey.Pakistan did it in style and with a CLASS of an EXAMPLE and I do it now. I lay down that as ean example with a BELIEF that Hockey india would pik up that point. If they DO NOT they are an ASS ie the DONKEYS.
Pic:: Madam Indira Gandhi listening to all the EXPLANATIONS and taking it from the members of the Victorious World Cup Hockey Winning team, March 18th 1975 at her residence
Pakistan I order to build itself a very STRONG Hockey playing
nation GIFTED the WORLD
CUP HOCKEY TO F.I.H TO HOLD THAT , THEN IT GIFTED THE CHAMPIONS TROPHY TO HOLD
THAT TO THE F.I.H, THEN IT GOT HOCKEY ADMITTED TO THE ASIAN GAMES TO DO IT, AND THEN IT GAVE THE
ASIA CUP TO A.H.F TO HOLD THAT.
The WORLD of HOCKEY completely got transformed and Pakistan
won all the major International Hockey titles from 1978 to 1984 except the
Esanda International in 1983.

In Asia the Asian Games would be held in 2022, the Asia Champions Cup in 2023 . Here in between the ASIAN CHAMPIONS TROPHY a NEW TROPHY should steep and come
in. THAT INDIA SHOULD GIVE IT TO A.H.F and that should be India’s GIFT to the Asian Hockey. It
should be held in between the two Asian titles as mentioned and it should be
held for the Asian Men’s Asian Women’s, Asian Juniors- both Men and Women.
The Asia CHAMPIONS CUP should be played between SIX-TOP-TEAMS
of Asia. The SIX teams FIRST should be chosen to play in this tournament on the
basis of the TOP-SIX-TEAMS that occupies that place after the commencement of
Asian Games and then it again should be the top six teams after the Asia Cup as
THIS SHOUL;D BE HELD ONCE IN EVERY TWO YEARS IN ASIA,
Thereagain, after every ASIA tourney for titles in Hockey,
there should be a ALL-ASIA-STAR Team chosen and it should be pitted against the
REST OF ASIA to play the SUPER ASIA CUP and this game should be played on the
basis of the BEST-OF-FIVE-GAMES and one who wins three games should be awarded
that Trophy.
Thereafter the ASIA –BEST- ELEVEN team should tour these SIX
countries to play a series of three Test each against their national side.
After the 1974 Asian games at Tehran, the Pakistan Hockey
Federation chose a ALL-TIME-BEST-ASIAN-XI team after that Asian games Hockey
based on their performance of the players in that tourney. That team was named as
ASIA XI TEAM. That team had three Indians, One Malaysian, Poon Foke Looke, One
Japani and one Sri-Lankan three Indians Ashok Kumar, Ajitpal Singh and Surjit
Singh and the rest 12 were the Pakistani’s
.Tat team played FIVE matches against the Pakistani side and Five matches
against the Indian side. The Pakistani’s team beat this side by 3-2 in the
series played at Pakistan and it won 2-1 against India .But the exposure and
the match practice that the Indians got playing against this team in 1974
helped them in a GREAT manner and in a GREAT way to WIN THE THIRD WORLD CUP
HOCKEY AT MALAYSIA BY OUTWITTING PAKISTAN BY 2-1 IN THE FINALS.
It is so conjecture to feel and say that INDIAN HOCKEY AFTER THIS
COMPLETELY WENT TO THE DRAINS FOR THE REASON THAT IS PUT HERE.
The proceeds can be shared in the proportion o f 3:2:2:1:1:1
with the three going to Sri-Lanka to
raise their Hockey, two each going to Pakistan and Bangladesh to raise their
hockey and keep them afloat ;Pakistan has to be made to SURVIVE if HOCKEY at
all needs to survive .Without Pakistan in Hockey, it would be like a MAN or a
HUMAN BEING withoiut it’s HEART to survive and whatever our international relation
be with Pakistan- WE SHOULD NOT ALLOW THE PAKISTANI HOCKEY TO DIE AT ALL…….
NEVER……
for IF
PAKISTAN HOCKEY IS “ DEAD ” THE INDIAN HOCKEY WILL DIE IT’S NATURAL DEATH AND
THE WORLD HOCKEY WILL BE “ GONE ” FOR EVER.
Pic :: Air Chief Marshal Arjan Singh and Air Chief Marshal Noor Singh discussing Hockey, March 2nd 1968...
It is TIME for us to repay our DEBTS that we HOLD for
Pakistan. It was Pakistan courtest Air Marshal Noor Khan and Brigadier Atif which made India to
survive and get a place to play in the Mexico Olympics. Without that India and
it’s HOCKEY
would have gone out to the BURIALS for ever. It is now
time we PAY-BACK the PAKISTAN HOCKEY FEDRATION with
all our HUMBLENESS and all
our GRATIUDE so that it comes
out of the WOOD. That is a DUTY
for us to do it for them .
Out of the remains two ought to be given to Bangladesh to raise it's Hockey . vERY FEW NOW WILL REMEMBER HOW BANGLADESH MADE THE PAKISTANI TO DIE BEFORE THAT GOAL FROM HASAN SARDAR KILLED THEM IN THE ASIA CUP WHEN BANGLADESH LOST TO THEM BY 0-1 IN THE 1985 ASIA CUP HOCKEY AT DHAKA in 1985. . .. One would also not believe when I say that in the Junior Asia Cup Hockey in 1988 at New Delhi, the Bangladesh Junior team led Pakistan the ultimate winner till the 56th minutes of the game before bowing to them by 2-1 and it bagged the FOURTH PLACE when it lost to India for that BRONZE. That was the BEST that Bangladesh achieved in Hockey before their HOCKEY lost all it's sense and it was dead.
HOCKEY IN ASIA HAS TO SURVIVE AND BECOME ALIVE IF WORLD HOCKEY IS TO BE MAKE ALIVE AND MADE IT TO SURVIVE .
As we are far better than Pakistan, Sri-Lanka, Bangladesh, and as the countries like Japan, South Korea and India are far , far, far and far better than these countries WE SHOULD TAKE THE BIG BROTHER ROLE ALONG WITH SOUTH KOREA AND JAPAN TO SHARE THE REMAIN OF THE BOOTY IN THE SAME RATIO OF ONE IS TO ONE IS TO ONE.
Thus in the four years of time - we here at Asia would be playing each other for all the FOUR YEARS.That will keep the HOCKEY CALENDER INDIA busy all throughoiut, and that would be the BEST for Hockey Asia. The tournaments could be scheduled in between the World Cup, the Olympics and the Champion YTrophy without these tpourney's interrupting the MAJOR ONES that is played on the F.I.H scales and the International Olympics scales.
In the interest of the Asian Hockey a new TROPHY- ASIAN SUB
JUNIOR HOCKEY tournament for the boy’s under 15 IS THE NEED OF THE HOUR and
India should immediately propose that idea and should donate a TROPHY at once
to start this. That will REALLY bring many a sub junior to the fore and from
there many a Juniors as well as Seniors would come to the fore.
My main essence and the points that I would like to emphasise is-:
1). It is high time that India takes the lead role in reorganizing
and revamping the Asian Hockey. As compared to Pakistan India had never awarded
any trophies at all for the world to play for .It is now high time that India
comes up with two trophies.
2). Like the Champion Cup in the World level, India should
award one Trophy to the A.H.F and that should be the CHAMPIONS SUPER ASIA CUP
in which SIX best teams of Asia should compete. This should be played every two
years.
3). The Super Asia Cup should be played immediately after
the commencement of the Asian Games and then in the next year after the Asia
Cup is played. Thus it will help to roll on the Asian Hockey in terms of the
entire four years humped with Hockey and there will be no gap in between in
Asia for any country to miss out playing Hockey.
4). The Women competition in Asia also ought to be played on
the same lines. This will help the countries playing Hockey in Asia to keep on
playing for every year amongst themselves. This competitive Hockey will help
the standard to grow.
5). There should be Sub-Junior Asian Hockey won the same
lines and that should be started or rolled to commence immediately.
6). India should take the lead for all these Hockey
activities and the money that is collected should be shared in an manner so
that the poor countries with no money at all should get a chance to get some
money from these proceeds such that their Hockey comes up and develops like the
countries say Bangladesh, Sri-Lanka , and India now should come up to help
Pakistan by paying back it’s debt to India which India got it from them in
1968. Pakistan ought to be helped for Hockey to survive in Asia.
7). After every tournaments are conducted , there should be
a All-Asian –Best XI picked and this team should play a series of two matches
each in Pakistan, India, and the other four teams that qualifies for the Super
Best Six teams at their respective country. This will help each of the Asian
countries and their players to play against the BEST of the Asia and develop
their standard and raise their game. These kind of matches helps a lot for the
smaller and weak nation to develop their Hockey. Hockey in Bangladesh, Sri-Lanka
and some other Asian Countries needs to develop fast and soon.
What Is The A.H.F supposed
to do in the F.I.H
There are a lot and maybe not a lot that the Asian Hockey Federation
is supposed to do in the Federation Of International Hockey. Here the main points are illustrated as under-:
DRAG-FLICK
1). It needs to scrap the DRAG-FLICK by every account. Drag
flick is an pen invitation for the Goalkeeper or any body guarding the goal to invite
the DEATH. The ball which travels at that speed if it hits any player on the
face or mouth or any part of the head, THE RECEIVER WILL BE DONE AWAY WITH
DEATH. The old system of hitting the penalty corners has to be brought back
into the game
OFF- SIDE
2). The old system of offside has to be brought back into
the system and back into the game. A football or a Hockey game or a game which
is a ball game with eleven players playing, cannot be played without the
off-side being taken away. The off-side helps in involving new tricks and new
strategies to be brought into the place to break the deadlock and to score
goals. These kind of games that I have mentioned cannot be played without the
off-side and it’s rules or applicability just like the life cannot go without the
hands being put into places. The A.H.F should fight to bring the off-side rules
back into the game
FULL SEVENTY MINUTES OF THE PLAY
Hockey with a two and a half minutes of intermittent break
in between has been reduced to seventy minutes of the play that is being played
now. Every quarter now ought to be played for seventeen and a half minutes so
that in four different quarter , this game is played for seventy minutes. This
the A.H.F should get the F.I.H to do it.
HOCKEY TO BE
PLAYED ON GRASS AND TURF SIMALTANEOUSLY
Hockey unlike the other game , like FOOTBALL, is a very
natural game. Natural games are played on the grass. The game played on the
grass makes one to come up with new
inventions in terms of game play, techniques, strategy, method and it helps in
bringing about many improvisation in the game to make the game keener,
attractive , and it also helps in making the game look graceful.
The game that is played on the turf has snatched away
everything that related to aristocracy, grace and beauty of this game. New
rules which are totally unwanted which has made the game look very mechanical,
BRUTE and ungraceful, has to be done away with.
Now a change in the THOUGHT
PROCESS ought to be adopted. The Tennis like thought has to come.
Tennis is played in four different surface at Australia for
the Australian Open, at France for the French open at London for the Wimbledon
and at U S A for the U.S Open. The so called professional players adopt
themselves so very quickly everytime to change their game on these surfaces and
adopt themselves to play and win on these surfaces. There are many players who
have won the four different titles
playing on these four surfaces .THIS THOUGHT PROCESS ALSO IS TO BE BROUGHT IN
HOCKEY
ALTERNATIVE
SURFACE TO BE USED FOR EVER ALTERNATIVE TOURNEYS BY THE F.I.H
It is for the
A.H.F to move forward for these changes.Say if the AT PRESENT WORLD CUP is
being held on the Astro Turf for this World Cup, the next one would be played
on the earth/grass surface.
Similairly if the Champion Trophy isi played on the turf the
next edition ought to be played on the grass/earth surface. This will give an
equal chance to the other countries to come up and play Hockey. Not many
countries can afford to have the Astro
Turf which keeps on changing fast with the time and this is a costly method.
HOCKEY IS A POOR MAN’S GAME AND NOT THE AFFORDABILTY OF THE SUPER
RICH
This has to be borne and kept in mind. Because of the
ILL-WICKED thought process of the Europeans and the manner in which they have
ruled the F.I.H and have kept on bringing the changes after chages in the rules
and the surface to play Hockey at Kenya, Ghana and other country is DEAD.
Ghana sprang a surprise in 1975 when it against the
expectations of everybody qualified to play in the World Cup Hockey in 1975 at
Kuala Lumpur. Where is Ghana and it’s Hockey now. Similarly in Kenya Hockey is
dead. NOW WE FIND THAT PAKISTAN IS
SLOWLY DYING IN HOCKEY.
These are because of the fact that the Europeans and their
CONQUEST of everything and everypost at the F.I.H and it’s voting policy which
is fully wrong and unaccepted, have made Hockey a MOLL to dance to their tune
and to be used by them in an manner to do anything with it. The result is
the WORLD AND IT’S HOCKEY IS DEAD.
It cannot be that a GAME or a SPORT is played in a few
limited country like cricket is played. Cricket is a DACOIT GAME now. Hockey
was the game for one and sundry like football. It has to made alive to survive
and not like cricket where the muscle flexing of India and the IDIOCRACY of the
I.C.C has to fight amongst themselves
and kill the entire game.
Cricket as it was , was a game that is played by 22 FOOLS
and was watched by 22 crores of FOOLS. Hockey and Football were and always have
been PLAYED by the GODS and HANDS-OF-GOD and it always has been watched by the
ONE’S who were the WORSHIPPERS of the GOD.
Strange Hockey is brought to the start of it’s death.
It now has to be MEDICATED and nourished properly so that a
NEW FACE comes out of it full of VITALITY, VIGOUR and LIFE so that Hockey takes
it’s new life and infuses LIFE to many, many and many for the game to move on
and survive
INDIA and the Asian Hockey Federation now has to SPRING to
WONDERS and LIFE
Well , that is it and That sums it all.
Regards and Thanks
