It was March 12th 1971 when this film ANAND which was directed by and produced by Mr Hrishikesh Mukherjee was put into the market place of the Indian CINEMA and GOODNESS….. Today it is ABSOLUTE the 50th years of the release of that film which is in the HEART of every Indian who saw that movie and if  any by any means has NOT seen that then he MISSED seeing the HEAVEN here on this earth .

Anything of this movie , which had the GREAT Gulzar to do with and everything of thois movie, the characters who played different roles, the MUSIC the SONGS and ofcourse the one who wrote the songs for this movie, Mr YOGESH …….. in one word if that could be  termed or written it couold be the word - : “ OSTENTATIOUS ” …… which according to the Oxford dictionary means - in an attempt to make other people notice and admire you:

A simple SOCIAL movie made for the common man with a common idea for the for the common life that the people of those era lived, this was a movie that was so uncommon to say that THESE KIND OF A MOVIE WILL NEVER BE MADE AT ALL FOR MANY A GENERATION TO COME.

What a LUCK that the one’s who were living then, maybe establishing themselves then, or those who were moving up in the ladder of the age then, might have been to watch this one and what a ESSENSE of a CLASS that is involved with life might have been the education that they learned from this movie where THERE WAS NO “ HEROINE ” AT ALL IN THIS MOVIE BUT THE MOVIE MADE EVERYONE TO FEEL THAT THERE WAS ONE AND WHAT A STELLAR ROLE BY RAJESH KHANNA AND AMITABH BACHCHAN.

This movie did put Rajesh Khanna , the HERO of this movie to such a place that NOBODY can ever touch him when it would come to TERM as the SUPER-STAR of the Indian movie. The Indian Hindi CINEMA has produced only ONE superstar and that was Rajesh Khanna and this was the movie that produced that. Also this movie again was a ind of  some steps that was created for Amitabh Bachchan who could be said that today he walks on those steps, everyday , to go to the HEAVEN, walks in the gardens of the Lords over there , enjoys the minutes and then strolls back to the place here that belongs to him.  FOR THAT WAS THE CHANGE OF THE “ FORTUNE ” OF THE TWO STARS THAT I HAVE MENTIONED HERE .

Historical background of this movie-:

In 1968 there was a film Padoan released .That film actually is the YARD or the backyard of the Indian and Hindi film and it’s history of producing films with a simple social etho and the essence that comes out from tjher same – it is all about the ACTING of the highest order and the casting of the characters to perform so brilliantly even after being so ordinary to perform that.

That film had Kishore Kumar Ganguly, ie , Kishoreda and  Mehmood to do that, and Padosan was a BLOCKBUSTER of that era in the annals of the Indian film history.

 PADOSAN WAS THE FIRST INDIAN FILM THAT REACHED TO A NEAR ABOUT OF A CRORE OF COLLECTION IN THAT ERA AND TIME.

It did not cross the ONE CRORE MARK but  it crossed the eighty five lakhs of the mark as a collection during that time which in today world by the time of 2019 would be about 60 crores of the total collection .If in 2019, that amount of about 85 lakhs is converted then the amount would be about 60 crores and that is what the film Padosan collected from the box office.That was the BUMPER of that film.

I would say about the film ANAND at last about it’s business but now back to the history. The film Padosan saw Kishoreda and Mehmood in the bet of the ever best of light in terms of the acting that they produced in that film which was completely “ SERIOUSLY-HILARIOUS” which Kishoreda did that, and “ OUTSTANDINGLY – HILARIOUS ” which Mehmood performed while exhibiting that role.

It was that Mr Hrishikesh Mukherjee who had these two stars in his eye for this film Anand. The seriousness by which Amitabh Bachchan did and portayed his character in that film and the effevescene that Rajesh Khanna displayed in that movie were the character that Hrishikesh Mukherjee had it in his eye to offer it to Kishoreda and Mehmood. The movie  would revolve around the two were his idea.

 Hrishikesh Mukherjee and his annoyance throws Kishoreda out of the film and role  

It was that Kishoreda just DID NOT LIKE to mingle with anybody after the recording of his songs or even after the shoot that he would do for any roles in the films.  The only exceptions were his family members especially Ashok Kumar, Anoop Kumar, and some important members of his family. The others who were granted that HONOUR were madam lata mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, the Burman’s Dev Anand, and Khemchand Prakash , ofcourse NOT to forget the GREAT Mohammed rafi. No other could enter his house.

Infcat his security, Bahadur the Gorkha from Nepal was told by HIM-  INKE SIVA KOI GHAR PAR PAIR NAHI DHAREGA. Ie , except these few NOBODY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO ENTER THE HOUSE.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee for some reason had seeked the permission to meet him at his house which he did and one fine moment, he entered the gate of Kishorda’s house only to be thrown out by the Bahadur Gurkha. This infuriated Mr Mukherjee to such a hilt that he THREW both Kishoreda and Mehmood out and he cast Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh bachchan as the cast for that film. THE REST IS A HISTORY.

Anand : The  “ SEED ” OF “ HISTORICAL” SUCCESS AND “ PRUDENCY ” For AMITABH

Absolutely a FAILURE for about two years from 1968 when Amitabh Bachchan made his debut in the Hindi film, to 1971 when this film was released and again a SUPER FAILURE from 1971 to 1974  when the Film ZANZEER was released, Amitabh Bachchan infact got his DISEASE of the CANCER-FAILURE completely and absolutely CURED after the release of the film Anand if that is what is to be described  .

This film infact portrayed the DEEP-INTENSE- EMOTION of Amitabh and the COOL-CLASSIC-ANGUISH that had the VOLCANO that could explode to KILL everyone without a WEAPON being used , as a TREASUE deep within his HEART as an ACTOR and that he actually revelaed it in Zanjeer which gave him a SOBRIQUET “ THE-ANGRY-YOUNG-MAN ” of the Indian film industry .

His ONE dialogue in this MOVIE - :

“ yahan to marmay ke liye  kuch bhi zindagi hai nahin aur ek aur paida hoh gaya hai ”

That dialogue, the way Amitabh delivered it in that movie was the FIRST indication about the OCEAN that this man had it in him to be a CLASS of a star and a HERO of the world of Hindi movie.

Those eye which were directing this film vould see that in Amitabh just like the eye which ses a GLASS and asserts that the glass is a DIAMOND. Hrishikesh Mukherjee was the FIRST one to see that and Prakash Mehra was the FIRST one to use that in Zanzeer, and after the release of the film Roti which featured Rajesh Khanna and it’s success the Indian film industry then got another STAR of the HIHEST CLASS in Amitabh Bachchan.

The Songs In The Film Anand-:

This movie has Mr Salil Choudhury as the Music Director.  The LESS said and sescribed about him, the BETTER . WORDS ought NOT to be WASTED by PRAISING someone  WHO DOES NOT REQUIRES ANY PRAISE and there are some who fall in tjose category. Pele, Dhyanchand, Mohammed Ali, Rod Laver , Osian Bolt, Michael Phelp fall in tose category. Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle fall in that category.  OF COURSE SALILDA TOO FALLS IN THAT CATEGORY.

When Yogesh brought his lyrics to showcase it to Hrishikeshda, he made a JOKE of him. He just said- YOU KNOW RAJESH KHANNA IS THE HERO OF THIS FILM. What are you BRINGING in for me to cast on HIM…… SAPNE SUNHARAY SAPNAY, KUCH HANSTAY, KUCH GUM KAY, MERAY YAADON KE SAAYE CHURAYE What are you writing man . You know who is Rajesh Khanna …..

The LITERATURE MIND of Salilda was listening to it. He took that piece of paper from Hrishikeshda and read it. He could UNDERSTAND the DEEP-INTENSE-MEANING that connects the RELATIONSHIP of a HUMAN BEING not connected in any manner to anybody but that gets connected to say about the last EIGHT  years of relationship of all the previous birth,  that these kind of WORDS can get those connected.

He discussed this matter with singer Mukesh, and the song was rehearsed. IT WAS A FITTING SONG with a FITTING ESSENSE that Mukesh sang to fit it into Rajesh Khanna …..

Aur Bhi Hai Kya asked Salilda to Yogesh and he then gave that paper in which he had scripted…..

“ KAHIN DOOOOR JAB DIN DHAL JAYE , SAANJH KI DULHAN BADAN CHOORAEY ”…..

 Salilda again rehearsed it with Mukesh. The late singer Mukesh had heard this song being sung in a Bengali film in Bengali by Kishoreda. He sang it for Mr Uttam Kumar for a being opposite Tanuja in Bengali and here it was to be screened on Rajesh Khanna the SUPER STAR of the Hindi film in Hindi.

Mukesh sang it for a rehearse and that was THAT . IT WAS AND IT IS STILL A CLASSIC SONG OF MANY A SONG IN HINDI ………

Specialty of the SONGS in the film Anand-:

The musical score and songs were composed by Salil Chowdhary. The lyrics were written by Gulzar and Yogesh. Gulzar wrote the poem " Maut Tu Ek Kavita Hai ", which is narrated by Amitabh Bachchan.

Before confirming Chowdhary for songs, Mukherjee approached Lata Mangeshkar to get the songs composed, as she had already worked as a music director in Marathi films under the pseudonym of " Anandghan ". She, however, politely refused the offer and decided to sing the songs in the film rather than composing them

Every song in this film scripted and written by Yogesh who was making his foray as a lyrist in the world of Hindi film and cinema, HAS A DEEP and a INTENSE meaning that connect the LIFE of a common man to the REALITY  that the LIFE serves him …….

The WORDS of every song,  connects the LIFE with the relationship that it possesses or it BUILDS one . Such are the WORDING, EACXH and EVERY song that are there in tjhis movie.

One such line is , ok ONE SUCH PARA IS-:

“ DIL  JANAY, MERAY SAARAY , BHED YEH GEHRAY,

HOH GAYE SACCHH , MERAY SAPNE SUNHAIRAY……

YEH MERAY SAPNE, HAI MERAY APNAY,

MUJHSAE JUDAA NA HONGAY, INKE YE SAYE ” ………

There is one more which I write here .It needs SUPERB knowledge of Hindi and it’s sense to understand that - :

“ KAHIN TOH DIL YEH, KABHIE MIL NAHIN PATAY,

KAHIN SE NIKAL AAYE, JANAMO KE NATAY

HAI MEETHI ULJHAN, BAIREE APNAA MUN,

APNAY HI HOKAY , DE YEH DARD PARAYE ”………

These songs and every words and every song in this film Anand are the real deep value of life and the deep meaning that every song has is the head which can understand Hindi and it’s literature so very fluently can only understand it . .Much of the credit goes to Gulzar to have contributed the literature of Anand in that manner and so much of  the credit goes to Mr Yogesh, and Salilda for completing the rendition of the songs in this movie which is simply unparralled in the annals of the Indian film history.

Kishoreda And Mohammed Rafi  Not Contributing To The Film Anand-:

For the RECORD and for the UNBELIEVABLE history that one could ever believe both the singer Kishoreda and Rafi Sahab did not lend their voice for this movie.

 THIS MOVIE THUS SET A NEW RECORD IN THE ANNALS OF THE INDIAN FILM THAT EITHER OF THE TWO NAMES THAT I HAVE MENTIONED HERE DID NOT LEND THEIR VOICE TO THIS MOVIE .

Anand thus became the FIRST movie in the annals of the Indian film  history  to NOT avail the facility of the voice of the two singer that I have named here.

The reason for Kishoreda not to sing or take any interest to sing in this movie was the music director Mr Salil Chowdhury .The CLASS of the notes of music that Mr Salil Chowdhury would produce and the SWINGS that it would possess,  HE NEVER BELIEVED AT ANY POINT OF HIS TIME THAT KISHORE KUMAR WAS A SINGER AT ALL.

He simply HATED the idea to believe that Kishorda was a SINGER at all. He would whenever he  composed a song or rendered his effort to put the music into it ,  to compose those songs with Kishoreda, he would make the LIFE a HELL for Kishoreda to PRECISE the song to PERFECTION by rehearsing it many a times and rerording it many a times. Till the movie Anand Kishoreda would work that hard for every song that he did it with Salilda.

However for this movie he had MADE UP HIS MIN- NO MORE TO DO WITH SALILDA

However came ANNADATA in 1971-72 and MERAY APNE in 1971-72 the two songs, “ GUJAR JAYE DIN-DIN-DIN ” written by Mr Yogesh who wrote all the sonf in and for the film Anand and KOI HOTAH JISKO APNA, HUM APNA KEH LETAY YARROO … composed by Salilda CHANGED his MIND for Kishoreda for ever,………That is how the “ METAMORPHOSIS ”  in terms of the THOUGHT for Kishoreda came into the mind of Salilda ……..This film Anand and the no usegae of Kishoreda infact took Kishoreda to such a height of singing and as a singer that is very HARD to describe.

 HOWEVER- Mr MUKESH CHANDRA MATHUR WON THE “ FILMFARE ” AWARD AND THE “ NATIONAL AWARD ”  FOR THAT SONG ….. KAHIN DOOOOR JAB DIN DHAL JAYE…..and that was the CLASSIC story of the song and the film.

Story Of The Film Anand-:

I would NOT like to write a HEAP about the story.People have seen that, however the memory being very short, I would like to narrate the gist in short and it is here-:

Bhaskar, an oncologist, treats the poor for no charge, but is often disheartened by the fact that he cannot cure all the ailments in the world. He becomes pessimistic after seeing the suffering, illness and poverty all around him. He is straightforward and won't treat the imaginary ailments of the rich. His friend, Dr. Kulkarni, follows a slightly different path. He treats the imaginary illnesses of the rich and uses that money to treat the poor.

One day, Kulkarni introduces Bhaskar to Anand, who has lymphosarcoma of the intestine, a rare type of cancer. Anand has a cheerful nature and despite knowing the truth that he is not going to survive for more than six months, he maintains a nonchalant demeanor and always tries to make everyone around him happy. His cheerful and vibrant nature soothes Bhaskar, who has a contrasting nature and they become good friends. Anand has the rare quality of attracting people and befriending them. In one of such encounter, he makes Isa Bhai, a theater actor, his friend. They enjoy each other's company and create an emotional bond.

Anand's condition gradually deteriorates, but he does not want to spend his remaining days in a hospital bed; he, instead, roams freely and helps everyone. He discovers that Bhaskar has strong feelings for Renu, whom he had treated previously for pneumonia. He helps Bhaskar express his love and convinces Renu's mother to bless their marriage. He tells Bhaskar that everyone should remember him as a lively person and not as a cancer patient. His end comes and he dies amongst his friends and everyone remembers him as a vibrant and lively person. Bhaskar becomes more philosophical and continues to treat patients with even more empathy and maturity.

The character of Anand was inspired by Raj Kapoor, who used to call Mukherjee ………………" Babu Moshay ". 

It is believed that Mukherjee wrote the film when once Kapoor was seriously ill and Mukherjee thought that he may die. The film was dedicated to Kapoor and the people of Mumbai. Later, Anand was remade in Malayalam, with the name Chitrashalabham, starring Jayaram and Biju Menon.

Till then the OVERALL record of the collection from the box office was accredited to the film PADOSAN . It had collected a whopping amount of Rs 85 laks overall .

This film ANAND was the  and has been the FIRST FILM in the annals of the INDIAN FILM HISTORY to earn Rs 1.07 crores and cross the ONE CRORE mark in tems of earning.

If the 2019 yardstick is applied to convert the Rupee value of the seventies to the stage of 2019 et al …… then according to the presnr market the earning now would be Rs 71crores .

Anand it is and it has been the FIRST ever film in the annals of the Indian film industry to CROSS the CRORE mark in terms  of earning from the box office.

Today this FILM celebrates it GOLDEN JUBILEE of the release as this was released then on March 12th 1971 .

The SPECIAL ONE’S of that film and their whereabout-:

Let us fall back and feel the presence of those who contributed to make this film a GREAT-SUCCESS .

Mr Hrishikesh Mukherjee is NOT alive today. THE “ HEART ” of this film Mr rajesh Khanna is no more amongst us.  The whereabout of Sumita sanyal on whom that song……

NAA JIYA JAYEE NAA , TERAY BINA, JEEEEYAA JAYE NAA, NAA … is NOT known to me.

Mr Salil Chowdhury is no more with us. Johhny Walker, Dara Singh,  Ramesh Deo are no more with us. I cannot fathom so surely to say the whereabout of Mrs Ramesh Deo who acted in tjis film .

Mr Mukesh Chandra Mathur also is not alive. So is the case of Mannada ie Mr Manna Dey. The man who sang that song in Bengali whom Mr Mukesh followed to sing the one one Hindi. For that song Kahin Dooor Jab Din Dhal Jaye and for whom the film was actually written and made, Kishoreda is not amongst us……

 STILL THE  “ ANAND ” THE JOY OF THOSE WHO WERE ASSOCIATED IN THIS FILM REMAINS IN OUR HEART.

March 10th 1971,andMarch 12th 1971 - ::The Two Dates That Made India The PALM " DATE " 

March 10th 1971, India for the FIRST time had defeated the MIGHTY West-Indies at cricket at Port - of - Spain, and that gave the TWO , the " SG "   ie , (S)unil Gavaskar and (G)undappa Vishvanath to Indian cricket and March 12th 1971, the film ANAND gave the two " AR "  ie , (A)mitabh Bachchan and (R)ajesh Khanna the " ARABPATI RAJA "  as they would call it , to the  Indian cinema ..

That is what India got from cricket and from the film to add to her POOR kitty to swell her total at the bank. 

It is and there is an adage and that is-:

 " THE VICTORY DATE OF INDIAN CRICKET AT PORT-OF-SPIAN AND THE RELEASE DATE OF THE FILM ANAND ARE THE " DATE PALM " of the history of the dates of India ."
