A Short
History Of These Three Sportsman Of India :: Heavy “ ACHIEVERS ” Without Recognition
This
article would be completely dedicated to two sportsman who did enough for India
before they breathed their last and to ONE who actually put India to the MAP of
the WORLD BOXING on the podium to have won the World medal in boxing, the FIRST
ever Indian to achieve the feat.
I’m
writing on Zoramthanga, Djingko Singh and B Vijaykrishna the cricketer from
Karnataks .Let me first start with
P.Zoranthanga from Mizoram, a state which gave India her FIRST medallion of
WORLD BOXING
A ) .
Pu Zoramthanga – The FIST of Fury
If it
is BOXING, there would be this name which would stand first. HE WAS THE ONE WHO
GAVE INDIA HER FIRST EVER BOXING MEDAL FROM THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AND THAT
HAPPENED IN 1990 AT THE WORLD BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP THAT WAS HELD AT BOMBAY .
Pu
Zoramthanga, is popularly known as Zoram
Thanga, and this is the name with which he emtrered into the ring for india. T. Zoramthanga originally was named as Run Nawn. He was born in the
year 1963 in Falam, Myanmar. He and his family later shifted their base at
India and the family took the Indian citizenship. He was Burmese Indian Chin boxer who is still
popularly remembered as first Indian
to win bronze medal at the 6th Boxing World Cup in Mumbai
(then Bombay), 1990. He should not be confused with his namesake Pu
Zoramthanga, the politician and long time Chief Minister
of Mizoram.
Early Life of Pu Zoramthanga
He was born Run Nawn to a Chin family in Selawn village near the town of Falam
in Chin State, Myanmar. His family moved to Tithim village near Tahan-Kalaymyo.
He joined the Myanmar Army there, where he first took up boxing. In order to
kick start his career he along with his family moved to Mizoram in India. In
1985, he changed his name and jumpstarted his boxing career. In the same year
he received the gold medal at the Mizoram-Myanmar Champhai Border Championships
in his weight category.
Career of Pu Zoramthanga
Zoramthanga took part in many national and international boxing s for Mizoram
and India. He made tremendous contribution in the World Amateur Boxing
Championships in Moscow in 1989, reaching the quarter finals, before of course
facing defeat to Cuban boxer and eventual runner up - Rogelio Marcelo.
His tremendous success was at the 6th Boxing World Cup in Mumbai in 1990,
where, in light weight category, he won a bronze medal. He won against Jin Yang
of South Korea on points in the preliminaries, and Paul Weir of Scotland in the
quarterfinals, also on points. Eventually, in the semi finals, he lost to Eric
Griffin of USA in the on points. However
he made his amends in the match for the Bronze medal when he won his bout
against an Indian boxer Yadav, to win that Bronze. Over the years he has
contributed tremendously to the welfare of the game. He has been an awesome
player and participated in various national and international events.
Keeping note of his achievements and success at the international boxing
events, Government of Mizoram made him the Sports Promotion Officer of the
state.
Later Years of Pu Zoramthanga
He retied from competitive boxing in the year 1992 but continued to hold the
position of Sports Promotion Officer until he died abruptly of hypertension at
the Lunglei Civil Hospital in Lunglei, Mizoram on February 9, 2005. He was
survived by his wife and three children.
The “ LIFE-TIME-ARJUNA ”
Inspite
of his immense contribution to the Indian Boxing he was NOT conferred with the
Arjuna Award. It was an EFFORT by the one who is writing this article when Mr
Atal vajapayee was the Prime Minister with Ms Uma Bharatiji as the Sports Minister when I personally
wrote a letter about the DISCRIMINATION being metted to many a Sportsman and woman,
to which I had received a letter from his Ministry to suggest some name of thos
who really deserved this award but were missed out due to apathy and negligency
of the Government.
My
effort along with some studies that the Government did on that, did help him
and Kasabha Jadhav to win the LIFE-TIME-ARJUNA in 2002. However the late Milha
Singh did a nonsence then by refusing this award and then it was stopped.
Again
I have been trying with the present Ministry and the Hon’ble Ptresident for the
same. Let me see whether any fruits is delivered as I’m trying it from 2006
till now WITHOUT ANY RESULT but Mr Vajapayee did it within 16 days after
receiving my letter then in 2002.
B ). Djingko Singh :: The Real “ FLYING BUTTERFLY TO STING LIKE A BEE ” Of Indian Boxing.....
Pic - : Djingko Singh Proudly Displaying His Gold Medal At The Official residence Of Mr Vajapayee in 1998
Djingko Singh :: Was The “ BUTTERFLY ” Who Flew To
Sting Like A “ BEE ”
There
is something, some spiritual power who always is by the side of the GOOD SOUL
to carry them to the place where everybody are and is astonished to see that SOUL doing
wonders. This had actually happened with this Indian pugilist .
None
to look in for , and none to fend for him, he was admitted into a place where
there were children's with no Fathers or parents. The care taking unit looked
after him and his destiny took him past the DESTITUTE for glory, which was such
that INDIA HAD TO WAIT FOR 16 YEARS
TO SEE THE REPITITION OF THAT GLORY…..
A
home where he started growing up without his parent suddenly saw him and his
taste toward BOXING and very soon he asked for a wall hanger of Mohammed Ali
to be put at the room where he was growing up . Further tales of Mohammed Ali
was told to him and he soon became his ardent follower.
It
is said that Dhyanchand and Milkha Singh practiced at Night under the
moon.Dhyanchand did it on the rail and Milkha on the open ground. We were NOT
alive to see that then and see it afterwards but read in the newspaper. However
Djingko did that with butterfly in his room which his room partners saw it.
He
would everyday catch a butterfly and put in his room. The Butterfly would fly
within the room to get away and Djingko would move like the atoms of
electricity within that room to enhance his mobility and his speed to match the
same. The butterfly would change the course of it’s flight and Djingko would
also ape the butterfly for the same. THIS IS HOW HE GEARED HIS CHANGE OF SPEED
and this is how he became so speedy within a small room.
The
inter area boxing championship first where he won that championship made those
who were looking after him to register with the School of Boxing at Imphal and
Djingko would travel all the way from his destitute home to that place for
attending the training. While going he would run all the way but while coming
back he would come by some other means to his destitute home. This is how he
enhanced his stamina and endurance.
Training
and continuos horning of his skill very soon saw him winning the State championship
and soon he was the National Champion of India. Djingko by that time has made
his movements like the flying butterfly, his punches were the FIST OF IRON
hitting the opponent, his jabs landing on the face were the PIN-POINT-ACCURACY
of the BOWS of warrior Arjuna at the TIP-OF-THE-POINT for him to garner the
points and the alacrity as well as the pace that he would swing both his arms
to hit and jab his opponent and to collect the points were measured in terms of
accuracy that 90% of his jabs and punches would get him the necessary points .
He was SO ACCURATE with his jabs and the punches.Overall he was so fast and so
nipply beside being so fury while jabbing, punching and garnering the points.
HIS OPPONENTS WERE LEFT STRANDED at the ring when he did that .
He
could change his position like the wind changing it’s course and he could
change his behavior of his bout and fights like the chameleon changing it’s
colour and he could raise his fury and aggressiveness to belt his opponent like
the propeller raising it’s action in terms of ROUNDS/REVOLUTION -PER-MINUTES in
an unbelievable manner.
Undoubtedly
his National title at Bangalore took him to the Indian squad and from there to
Bangkok in 1998. At Bangkok the host Thailand fielded TWO of it’s boxer, one
was a WORLD CHAMPION and the other one was a Olympic Bronze in 1996 or maybe at
1992 at Barcelona. The first round saw Djingko getting it easy but the second
one brought him to the Olympic Bronze of the Thai .The THAI WAS ALL IN LOSS
AGAINST WHOM HE WAS PITTED TO BE LICKING THE GROUND THREE TIMES.Djingko and his
punch so accurate and so fast threw him on the mat but he survived to loose on
points. The GLIMPSE made the Thai’s take notice. One more round and he was in
the finals.
In
the finals it was a GO-ALL-OUT-AND-HIT-WHERE-IT-KILLS
-HIM-THE-MOST. He was an OPEN
GUARDED BOXER and with that he everytime fell back on points as the opponent in
the final, the GOLD winning World Champ pierced through his open guard and collected
points after points. Everytime that Djingko fell behind he like the BUTTERFLY would fly within the
very close vicinity of his opponent and his so fast and so speedy movements
coupled with his smashes and jabs would make all the amends to be ahead of his
opponent .
Came
the final round and Djingko was THREE points behind but the manner in which he
moved up and danced around his opponent with such a flurry of so vivacious and
accurate hitting the face of his opponent from the right and the left
completely unfazed him and Djingko in one space of a very brutalizing movement collected
four point by hitting four jabs- all the one’s could be termed as DEADLY
AMMUNITION that would kill to inch ahead by 16-14. A last point conceded
brought it to 16-15 and with that the bout was over.
“
DJINGKO HAD BEATEN THE WORLD CHAMPION THAI BY A SOLITARY POINT TO WIN THAT GOLD
FOR INDIA, THE FIRST SINCE 1982 WHEN KAUR SINGH HAD WON THAT GOLD AT THE DELHI
ASIAD IN 1982 ”.
A
SURE-SHOT-OLYMPIC-MEDALLION, GROUNDED AND KILLED BY THINKLESS AND MINDLESS
INDIAN
It
was 1998 then. The Olympics 2000 were in the sight. Djingko was the HOPE that
the Indians carried but the NONSENSE HEADS ruling the indian boxing bruised him
. He had developed a serious injury at the wrist the right one. It was serious.
Even knowing that he was send to the Commonwealth games whereas he SHOULD NOT
HAVE BEEN .The first round at the Commonwealth against an Ausytralian
aggravated his injury in an manner that it could not recover at all.
With
that kind of an injury and it not healing he was pushed into the indian squad
for the Olympics 2000 . That was a DEATH KNELL. He lost out in the first round
and the wrist got worsened and the damage was such that th Doctors who nursed
him told him frankly- YOU ARE NOW NO WAY FIT FOR BOXING. That was the DEATH of
Djingko though he actually breathed his last on 2021.
No
and nobody would have pushed any sportsman to the fray with the kind of an
injury that Djingko carried. They would have treated him and would have used
him in the best manner possible. But the DROUGHT-HIT Indians to garner medals
with some hopes though those were the negative hopes, send this man and from there he was no more
the same Djingko. He was SHOT DEAD though he was alive to breathe his last
during 2021.
He
was a Junior Jettison Officer at the navy but he gave away his job for the LOVE
of boxing. He completed a course from the N.I.S Patiala to keep his touch with
the game he loved the most and at Patiala he taught many a lesson to the ilks
and the likes of Vijendra Sinsh, and Akhil Kumar . Hius movement were as fast
as it could be as the two boxers who won the Gold for india or the medals at
the Olympics had to feel and say about him. However the destiny made CANCER his
partner and from then he was no MORE a human being.
REPENT-::
PROMISE NOT FULFILLED
He met
Mr Atal Behari Vajapayee , separately as Mr Vajapayee wished to meet him separately
after the 1998 Asiad.
Pic - :: Djingko Singh announcing that his GOLD was the TREASURE of India and the Prime Minister before garlanding it to Mr Vajapayee with Mr Suresh Kalmadi watching, in 1998
There
was that GOLD which he took it away from
his neck and GARLANDED it to Mr Vajapayee saying- SAHAB YEH INDIA KA AUR AAPKA
AMAANAT HAI . RAKH LIJIYE .
After
a few minutes of talk with Mr Vajapayee , Mr Vajapayee has ANNOUNCED-:
ALL THE
15 GOLD MEDALLIONS OF ASIAD 1998 WOULD BE GIFTED AND GRANTED A PETROL PUMP……
Sadly
Djingko waited for it for abour 23 years from 1998 to 2021 till he BREATHED his
last. He often spoke about it BUT TILL NOW THAT PROMISE HAS NEVER BEEN
FULFILLED BY THE BJP GOVERNMENT FROM 1998 TO 2004 and FROM 2014 to 2021.
Djingko
wanted to see it and go away from this world as that PETROL PUMP would have
given his WIFE, his SON and his DAUGHTER a SECURITy and a HOPE to live it with
for…..
PROMISES
MADE AND NOT FULFILLED WERE NEVER THE ACT OF Mr VAJAPAYEE AND THE B.J.P IN ANY
CASE BUT THIS IS THE ONE…… Hope Mr Narendra Modi fulfils that……
We
had HEARD of -:
FLIES
LIKE A BUTTERFLY AND STINGS LIKE A BEE…..
The
FINALS of the Asiad 1998 Boxing against that Thai opponent made me to FEEL it
and SEE it and HOW CORRECT IS THAT SONG.
THE
REAL BOXERS ALWAYS DO THAT AND THEY DO THAT REALLY MAJESTICALLY AND AMAZINGLY
AND DJINGKO WAS THE TRUEST EXAMPLE OF IT……. If I had NOT watched that BOXING
FINALS of the Asiad 1998, I WOULD NOT HAVE BELIEVED THAT …..
His Greatest " GIFT " To Indian Boxing - ::
It was he who saw Mary Kom, and the great TREASURE of boxing that she possessed. He took an infancy toward her to bring her to the ring and he TRAINED her in an manner in her initial days that in her entire career Mary Kom won 18 medals for India , all from the boxing which includes SIX GOLD MEDALS from the World Cup Boxing Championship.
That
was the man the FIST OF FURY OF INDIAN BOXING …….
B.Vijaykrishna
….. Three Ranji titles, Two Irani titles , One Title Of Beating West-Indies Yet
NEVER CARED ABOUT
He
Was So TOXIC At Times But Was Always
Correct When The Result Would Come ……..
It was the year 1970 December 1970
to be exact. It was the Finals of the All India Vizzy Trophy. The two opponents
in the Finals were the North Zone university and the South Zone University…..
I was enjoying my holidays of
December 1970 at Kumbda Colliery and the week holoidays which we would call it
as CHRISTMAS LEAVE was for seven days. Our scholl would conduct the Second
Terminal exams and would allow us to enjoy this for seven days to be with our
family members . Hence I was AT HOME.
Feeling very bored and not having
anything to do I switched on to me radio set and was trying here and there when
the name ANIL DESHPANDE and RAKESH TANDON fell onto my ears .The minutes that
passed by brought out another name P.Mukund who was leading this side in the
Finals of that Vizzy trophy and B.Vijaykrishna …..
Bundling out the North for about
167 runs South had amassed a huge total of 447 and then came North for it’s
second innings. This time they were rounded off for 147 and there was an
analysis that read-:
8-5-3-3 .
This was the analysis of B.Vijaykrishna
who was known as VIJJI to his friend and
followers.
Well VIJJI who was playing his
VIZZY TROPHY finals and was only twenty years of age then , would not have got
to bowl at all. It was his saying to his Captain P.Mukund on that day - ::
MUKUND IF YOU GAVE ME TO BOWL ,
MYSORE WOULD NOT STOP THE KAVERI WATER FLOWING TO MADRAS THEN…..
Struck by the words the South Zone
skipper gave him to bowl and his analysis are depicted as above.
The problem with Vijaykrishna was
that HE ALWAYS SPOKE THE CORRECT THAT WAS HAPPENING AND HE WAS THE ONE WHO WAS
BELTED FOR HIS TALKS. …..
In short and in TOTO, the FIRST
Ranji Title which Karnataka had won in 1974 was due to the fact that he took
away that match from Salim Durrani and Rajasthan and he put it to the lap of
Erapalli Prasanna and Karnataka. From 70 for five with Vishvanath abd Brijesh Patel
gone and 146 for 6 , he took it to 271 before Karnataka folded with VIJJI
scoring a ballistic 71.
He again did that in 1982-83 when
Bombay had scored a 534 and Karnataka grounded at 347 for six. His 42 that he
scored with Jayathirth Abhiram hitting 69, Ranjit Khanvilkar scoring a 28, and
then even Raghuram Bhat holding it out saw Bombay taking a SOLITARY run lead
and that went a BIG WAY to help Karnataka win that Ranji Trophy . His 42 was
the DEMOCLE which carried that SWORD to piut an end of everything that Bombay
carried with it and if that was NOT enough, the manner in which he got Sandip
patil bowled by that so fast and ARMOUR delivery which castles patil’s timber
as if it was NOT to be pitched again in that match.
WHAT A BEASTLY DELIVERY
WITH THE BEAUT THAT IT CARRIED.
That was the ONE wicket that he
got in that innings and that wicket was the WIN that made Brijesh patel to lift
that Ranji for Karnataka.
His act again was seen in 1979
when the visiting West-Indies were baulked by ONE run to lose that match to Karnataka
with VIJJI claiming 6 for 73.
THAT WAS THE ONLY OCCASION AND THE FIRST ONE
IN THE ANNALS OF INDIAN CRICKET WHEN A ASSOCIATION BEAT A FULL FLEDGED TEST
SIDE TO WIN A MATCH. The Ranji and the Irani Champion Karnataka had achieved
that HONOUR and the MILESTONE with VIJJI displaying
his GUNS and the CANNONS for the Kallicharran led
Windies to believe tat spinners were available like the flowing water of river
Ganges to PURIFY the SOUL of cricket be it the teams from abroad or India. That
was the WEALTH of the talented spinners that India had in their RESERVOIR.
Once again it was the match
between the Irani Trophy Champion Karnataka and the Rest Of India. India had won
the WORLD CUP and immediately after all the clamouring and the ROLL-OF-HONOUR
this match was played. Karnataka folded for a score less than 275 , but the
Rest who were all with Gavaskar,
Vengsarkar, Sandip Patil, Yashpal Sharma, Kapil Dev , Sunil Valson were blown
off for a little less than 175 with Vijaykrishna and Prakash rathod sharing all
the 10 wickets of the Rest, FIVE-EACH to put the REST for all the REST in that
match……
Vijaykrishna was never over
Prasanna and Chandra till 1979.Once the two famed spinners left the game he was
allowed to show up for everything that he possessed and it was the Karnataka skipper
Gundappa Vishvanath who allowed the two spinners Vijaykrishna and Raghuram Bhat
to prosper and they did it in style. They took Karnataka to two ranji finals in
1981-82 and again in 1982-83 where in 1983 they won. They again helped Karnataka
to win the Irani in 1983 . That was the period when the Karnataka cricket was
in a transformation stage and Vijaykrishna in a very big manner helped them to
hold their HONOUR HIGH with a very high percentage of marks.
Pic - :: B.Vijaykrishna in that knock of 100 against Maharashtra in 1975-76
He was a WHIRLWIND batsman and if
the T-20 had been played at his time HE WOULD HAVE EARMED IN BILLIONS. His
knocks were simply the TORNANDO or the HAILSTORM which would leave it’s effect.
Two centuries that he hit in the Rajni- a 102 against Maharashtra in 1975-76
and another one against Bihar in 1977-78 went in a big way to help his team win
and the knocks were almost A-RUN-A-MINUTE. His 102 against Maharashtra in
1975-76 was scored in 90 minutes and his century against Bihar came in about 100
minutes. That was the manner in which he batted.
His way of talking was something
at times which KILLED a person. Many a times it happened but at last he would
PROVE that his words carried meaning. One such was the occasion when in the
QUARTER FINALS against Bihar, Prasanna wanted to declare the innings and he wanted
to bat. He requested Prasanna to carry on so that he bats. Not finding it good
Prasanna replied it in negative to which he answered-:
DROUGHTS WILL NOT HIT KARNATAKA IF I BAT FOR SOME
TIMES.
Listenning to it Gundappa
Vishvanath who was the Deputy to Prasanna for Karnataka, replied and requested
Prasanna to continue to prolong the batting and when he batted he score a
century in about 102 munutes. When he came back to the pavilion he just said to
Prasanna- WE ALSO NEED TO BAT . WE HARDLY GET BECAUSE VISHY AND TABBU ( PATEL )
SCORE SO HEAVILY THAT WE DO NOT GET TO BAT….. Prasanna was MUMM but was HURT by
the manner in which he said it to Prasanna.
Vijji was always a man who spoke
in that manner. So terrible was for many that in 1966-67 when the Karnataka,
then Mysore team was to be picked by the
selectors they dropped him from the side. The Mysore skipper then,
V.Subramanium, known as SUBBU to all requested the selector to pick him . A
TALENT IN GOLD WOULD BE WASTED Said Subbu
to the selectors.
The " FIRST " Of " VIJJI " To Talk In That manner......
It was the School final game between Seshadripuram High School and the Fort High school were Gundappa Vishvanath was studying. In that game in a tense match despite of Gundappa Vishvanath was was only 16 years of age then and Vijaykrishna who was playing for Seshadripuram School , who was only 15 years of age, a 159 by Gundappa Vishvanath could not save the Fort High School to win that match. Vijaykrishna had claimed seven wickets in that match. He won that Inter District school championship title for his School the Seshadripuram High School
After the game was over the Karnataka State School team was announced and Gundappa Vishvanath was dropped. He was NOT selected for the Karnataka's State School team .Vishvanath in the semis had hit 112 against the Bishop Cotton School where Brijesh Patel playing in that match for B.C.S had scored an enterprising 137 yet B.C.S had lost .
After watching Vishvanath not being selected for the Karnataka State School Vijaykrishna in his customary manner said-:
IT SEEMS THE KANNADIGAS HAVE STARTED TO EAT DOSA'S WITHOUT COCUNUT CHUTNEY AND THE SAMBAR DAAL. How can one relish a dish of Dosas without the chutney and the sambar. His words caused such a ripple that HE ALSO WAS AT LAST DROPPED FROM THAT SCHOOL TEAM . However he went onto be selected for the Karnataka Ranji team in 1966 that year COURTESY Subramanyam. That is how he always was. !! ..
His way of talking makes it very
hard for the others to bear it and the team would suffer , but a very REALISTIC
Subbu replied- PICKING HIM IS YOUR HEADACHE AND CONTROLLING HIM IS MINE .I want
him to be in the side and I CAN CONTROL HIM LIKE A CABBIE CONTROLS THE
STEERING. The selector gave him to Subbu in 1966-67 and Vijji gave THREE Ranji
Trophy, remaining Runners-Up in the other two in 1974-75, and 1981-82, and Two Irani Trophy to Karnataka, remaining Runners Up in one in 1978, beside a Duleep Trophy to South Zone
and that was in 1975-76 when South Zone had won the Duleep Trophy, AND NOT TO FORGET THAT VICTORY IN 1979 AT AHMEDABAD AGAINST THE KALLICHARRAN'S TEAM OF WEST - INDIES , where he claimed 6 for 73. . .
I'm always being taken so rudely by writing something which are so very correct and TRUE. I seek the permission to write one more now.
HOW MANY RANJI TITLE HAS SOURAV, OR V.V.S LAXMAN OR RAHUL DRAVID WON FOR THEIR ASSOCIATION.
They are spoken in such a HUGE measures and STRENGTH but can I know how many have they won in their career and does it measures in the same length as Vijaykrishna won it for Karnataka.
Those are spoken in terms of SERVANTS OF THE GAME ?. WHAT ABOUT THESE BEGGARS OF THE GAME.
" DON'T THESE BEGGARS WHO HAVE BEEN TREATED LIKE BEGGARS DESERVE THEIR " BITS- AND - PIECES " FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION FROM THE B.C.C.I AND THE RESPECTIVE GOVERNMENT BE IT THE SATTE OR THE CENTRE FOR THIER DEEDS OF CONTRIBUTING TO MAKE THEIR ASSOCIATION AND THE COUNTRY FOR WHATEVER THEY HAVE DONE ?."
Is it not our duty for VOUCH and FIGHT for them ? .
His bowling was the CONTROLLED LENGTH and the DRIP that he always got DIPPING the ball at the very appropriate place and the MARVELLOUS CONTROL that he had in his ARM-BALL which was the MAGIC that he produced. He was always under the shadow of Prasanna and Chandrashekar else his tally of Ranji wickets could have been MUCH, MORE, and the MOST that it could have been .....
His contribution NEVER was
recognised either by the K.S.C.A, or by the State Government to confer him
with the Ekalavya award or by the B.C.C.I to confer him with the Col C.K.Nayudu
award but that is how the B.C.C.I and the K.S.C.A act and react when it comes
to it…..
In ONE sentence if anybody would like to describe him perfectly would be that HE WAS " SALIM DURRANI " of a player for cricket for Mysore and later Karnataka .He played the game exactly like Salim Duranni played but he never aped or copied him .
I HOPE Anil Kumble will ACT and
the B.C.C.I also will arise from the KUMBHAKARAN that it does……
REST IN PEACE ALL THE THREE
SPORTSMAN …… THE SPORTS FRATERNITY BOWS IT’S HEAD FOR YOU AND YOUR CONTRIBUTION
TO THE GAME …….
That sums up it and that is all .....
Regards and THANKS
