WOMEN HOCKEY AT THE OLYMPICS - ::
Today is the date, but the years have changed. It was this date 41 years ago when the FIRST ever game of the Hockey for Women was played at Moscow in the Olympics.
It was something NEW, something very different and something very unusual. The WORLD of SPORTS today saw the FIRST ever WOMEN HOCKEY MATCH today played at the Olympics.
The INAGURAL HOCKEY OLYMPIC WOMEN MATCH was played between Poland and Austria today.
The SURPRISE packet was that ZIMBABWE won the HOCKEY WOMEN GOLD medal. Zimbabwe was originally known as RHODESIA and it was a BAN for any other country to either play South Africa or Rhodesia because of the APARTHIED policy. Rhodesia separated from South Africa as a nation and changed its name to Zimbabwe. It participated in this Olympics and send its Women Hockey team to participate in the Olympics..
“ WOMEN HOCKEY WAS FIRST PLAYED AT THE MOSCOW OLYMPICS IN 1980 ”
Zimbabwe, Czechoslovakia , U S S R, Poland India and Austria were the team that played in the Women’s Hockey at Moscow for the FIRST edition and for the FIRST time. The countries in that order were placed in the final standings.
The entire tournament was played on and in the Round-Robin League system and the teams in the Women Section which earned the maximum points in that order were placed in the standings.
India for the FIRST time participated in the Women’s Hockey and finished fifth in the final standing. India lost TWO close match against U S S R by 3-1 and again against Czechoslovakia by 2-1and to finish against Zimbabwe by 1-1 to narrowly miss the Bronze. Our Girls were playing on the POLYGRASS for the FIRST time.
The tourney for the women's started on July 25th and ended on July 31st and these three games were played within three days on the polygrass. Not used to playing on the polygrass and completely tired after playing three games on three days- the girls buckled under tiredness and pressure and caved in to loose the Bronze medal.
The Olympics Hockey matches at Moscow Olympics were played on the Polygrass , rpt-“POLYGRASS” and NOT on the ASTRO-TURF.and the lack of exposure did dug, and dogged India .
Anyway Women Hockey in the Olympics came to stay forever after this Olympics and that was a big push to Women Hockey.
In this Olympics at Tokyo, Indian Eves' Hockey team will be playing in the tournament and one has to wait and see the end result.
Our Best Result In Womens' Hockey
After finishing FIFTH in the Inaugural Olympics Eves Hockey in 1980, we finished with the Gold at the Asiad 1982 when the Womens' Hockey was intyroduced for the FIRST time in the annals of Hockey in the Asian Games.
Thereafter at the World level we could not achieve anything always being walloped by our opponents ruthlessly and mercilessly. However this team has shown some character that has gone to Tokyo 2021 .One has to see what they come up with.
In this edition of the Eves Indian Hockey team that would participate at Tokyo 2021 Olympics, the Indian squad would be led by Ms Rani Rampal who was adjudicated as the BEST EVES HOCKEY PLAYER by the F.I.H. a year ago, and one would like to see what fortune does this team brings to India as this team had won the Gold at the Asiad Eves Hockey some two years ago.
That is it
That sums up it and that is all .....
Regards and THANKS
