" Yaaddon Ki Dhool, Aankhon Mai Hai, Hasrat Ki Daman Bhi Hathon Mai Hai
Khwabo Kay Viraano Mai Tanha, Thak Gaye Hum  Rahein Chalte Chalte...."

It was unexpected and it was something as very difficult to achieve but than it happened and against all the ODDS with the element of luck strongly favouring India a sort of unbelievable victory was achieved by India on August 24th 1971 and today it happens to be the start of the GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATION of the same.

How Did It Happen And What Made It So-::

It was that the two teams India and England were playing their series of Test matches against their opponent. It all started from 1968. India were beaten by Australia by 0-4 in the Test series but India beat New Zealand by 3-1 thereafter. In retrospect England had beaten the West – Indies by 1-0 under Ray Illingworth.

India then played New Zealand at home and held them to a lucky 1-1 draw but had lost to Australia by 1-3. England were beaten by the Rest Of The World by 1-4 but had beaten the Austyralian side under Bill Lawry by 2-0 in a Six Test Match series. Thereafter England beat New Zealand by 1-0 in a three match series thereafter .

India then took on the West-Indies and beat them by 1-0 in a Five Test match series . Here again England took on the Pakistanis’ and beat them 1-0. Thereafter it was the India- England series .  Who soever had won this series would have been deemed  to be the WORLD CHAMPIONS OF TEST CRICKET.

To make the matter very safe for either England or the Indians, the South African side under Ali Bacher by then had defeated the Australians under Bill Lawry by 4-0 in a four Test match series. That set the ball rolling and anyone between the England-India series would have been declared as the WORLD-CHAMPION-OF-THE-WORLD in Test cricket.

India’s Internal Problems Rectified In This Series -:

It was Vijay Merchant who was the  Chief Of The Selector  for the  B.C.C.I and he brought out a rule.It was those who would not be playing the ranji Trophy, the Duleep trohy as cricketers would not be selected at all to play for India. He made it amply clear that the players selected for India  under his stewardship, completely would be based on the performance of the Duleep Trophy and the Ranji Trophy and in certain case the performance of the Irani Trophy too would be taken into account. Players who would not play in these tournament will never be considered at all for selection for the Indian team to play Test matches and the performance of the players will be the sole criteria for them to don the Indian colours.

In this contest the players like Farokh Engineer, Budhi Kunderan were not considered at all to play for India against The west-Indies team at the Carribeans in 1971 where the Indian team won the series by 1-0 . However the performance of the Wicket-Keepers chosen left a lot to be desired.

The two Wicket-Keeper chosen for the tour of the West-Indies, Rusi Jheejebhoy and Pochiah Krishnamurthy were good when it boiled to keeping. In the series against the West-Indies, Krishnamurthy scalped 20 victims behind the wickets  in  the Tests, but his run scoring was very poor. Jheejeebhoy- less said the better.

In the light of this for the English tour there were THREE Wicket-Keeper selected .  IT WAS THUS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE ANNALS OF INDIAN CRICKET THAT THE INDIAN TEAM WAS WIT THREE WICKET-KEEPERS FOR A TEST SERIES

Wicket-Keeper Pochian Krishnamurty was in the side. However it was the 19 years of age then, Syed Kirmani who was also selected to represent India and ofcourse Farokh Engineer who had by them made England as his second home but a permanent one to settle there was inducted into the side to lend a solid support to the team and at last it was he who made the DREAM-COME-TRUE for the Indian team.

The reason to have three Wicket-Keeper was 1). Farokh Engineer who was at England and was playing the counties was in a better position to know the English bowlers by the palms of his hand. Also as he was based at England then, it would not make any difference to the Indian contingent to have him always there for the Test matches , 2). Farokh Engineer was, on a mutual consideration, was given the break to play for India in only the TEST SERIES MATCHES  as Engineer was to play for Lancashire for the remainders to fulfil his county engagements, 3). For the remaining county matches, the two Indian wicket-keepers would do the job for India and it would have given a huge experience to Syed Kirmani to further strengthen his cricketing abilities as he was shaping himself into a very good keeper by then.

However to the dismay of one and sundry, it was so unexpected to see the name of Buddhi Kunderan missing out from the list of the Wicket-Keepers for that tour. Kunderan had settled at Scotland and his minor county cricket team had assured him that he would be fully relieved of his duties from the minor counties at Scotland to give his service to the Indian cricket team .

Kunderan is a cricketer in the annals of Indian cricket who by then had a batting average of 33 runs plus which according to the standard of the Test cricket then, was considered as a very good batting average but to the ASTONISHMENT of many and many his batting was divided into two part, ONE as a OPENER and the OTHER as a mid-order bat, and the part number one is much better than the best of the Indian openers that played for India in the Test matches.

His batting average as an opener was 41.00 runs per innings, and taking this into account he as he was staying at Scotland, and his movement at Scotland would not have been of any disadvantage to the Indian squad, he should have been taken and inducted into the side. That would have relieved Sunil gavaskar of many a headaches that he had to face to see Ashok Mankad very badly failing against England as an opener . Kunderan was doing extremely good in batting while playing in the minor counties and in a TEN OVER cricket match in an arranged exhibition match, he and Farokh Engineer in a Ten OVERS match at England, opening for an invitational team had thumped 127 runs without being separated as an opener. That was the form he was carrying then and if Kunderan would have played for India then maybe the Lord Test which the GOD rain saved us , maybe we could have turned the tables on England.

During that stage of the match at Lords, all India needed was to play the Gillette Cup or the Benson and the Hedges Cup or the experience of the county cricket which was played for 10 or 20 overs a day then and Buddhi Kunderan was doing an exceptional job for the minor counties that he was playing for them on Saturdays at Scotland and on Sunday at England, then. The non-inclusion of Buddhi Kunderan and Salim Durrani from 1966-67 to about 1973 was the GREATEST crucifying act that the Indian cricket did it to themselves. Both could have made a lot of difference at Australia. Atleast I can say at Australia India could have won the last Test where chasing a total of 374 for victory,India were out for 337 losing thatmatch by 37 runs . Also if Buddhi Kunderan and Salim Durrani had played against The Bill Lawry side Australian in the last Test at Madras the score would have been INDIA-2, AUSTRALIA – 2 at the end of that Test series.

VIJAY MERCHANT’S AUTOCRACY DID DIG THE INDIAN CRICKET IN MANY A WAYS .

His selection of Rusi Jheejhebhoy as a second wicket-keeper to Pochiah Krishnamurty in place of Sunil Benjamin or Sharad Hazare too was as good as that he had made a LOT of ENEMIES within the cricketing circle during that time. A lot of connoisseurs and critics even those who played Duleep trophy and Ranji Trophy then, still believe that Jheejhebhoy was picked in the Indian team beacuse a quote from East Zone was to be given and since he was a Parsi, he was nodded for the same at the expense of Sunil Benjamin.

Anyway, at last Vijay Merchant was able to compromise with his AUTOCRATIC principles of LIFE and CRICKET and the selection of Farokh Engineer it was which turned out to be a BLESSING IN DISGUISE for the Indians on that tour.

The First Two Test matches-:

The First Two Test matches then on that tour was played at LORDS and at MANCHESTOR.India was always at the upper end of the First test match lest on the last day in an attempt to chase 187 for the VICTORY, and absolutely not knowing, then , how to play a ONE-DAY match and without it’s expertise, India went in for that chase ans were lucky that the match ended with the rain coming to save India. Had it not been the rain, India would have lost that match.

The SECOND Test at Edgbaston was also dominated by England. In this Test the centurion Ray Illingworth was clean out but was ruled not-out and he went on to stroke a 107 which saw England crawling to386. Beside ray Illingworth, it was Peter Lever who had stroed an unbeaten 88 and Brian Luckhurst had scored a 78.

India somehow saved the follow-on through a magnanimous 50 by Eknath Solkar and it was S.Venkatraghvan who had scored a fighting 20, added a valuable 30 runs and took the score to 194 when Venkat was out that saved India from the follow-on but it was Eknath Solkar, the only Half-A-Centurion of that innings for India in the lower order ,  which saved the follow-on for India. Gavaskar had scored a 57 while opening.

So much so that when Ray Illingworth completed his century there was no body to clap for that and nobody went upto him to congratulate him for that effort. That was the envy that the team were carrying for that century by Ray Illingsworth.

England declared at 245/3 in the second innings and set India a mammoth total of over 400 plus to win that match.India were reeling at 65/3 and it was again the GOD rain that saved the Test match for India.

The Oval Test :: August 24th 1971 - :: August Kranti Always In The Annals Of The Indian Sports

August Kranti is something which holds importance in the annals of the Indian history.  In sports too it holds a lot of importance.

It was August 15th 1936 when India defeated Hitler and Germany by 8-1 to win her LAST of the Olympic Hockey Gold before the Independence .Thereafter the two World War saw Hockey being pushed to the backdoor, for only to again come back in 1948 when India had defeated Great Britain by 4-0 to win it’s fourth Olympic Hockey Gold . That was on August 12th 1948.

Now it was the turn of Cricket to script about itself and all about the Indian tale for the writers to make a folklore of the same for the people to read those and talk about it for the generation to come.

England it was which won the toss and elected to bat first. They scored a 355 with John Jameson who was born at Bombay but played for England that scored a 82. Allan Knott further added some spice to the English innings and England were all out for 355 . Richard Hutton scored a 81 then .

Pic - :: Johhny Jameson is run out in the first iinings for 82.Chandra is the bowler.

In this Test match Johhny Jameson was run out in both the innings. In the first he had scored a 82 before a shot which Chandra had attempted to stop off his follow through, hit his fingers and ricocheted to the wickets and an unlucky Jameson who was at the non-striker end but who had moved out of his crease was unlucky to be run out. MANY OF THE INDIANS ON THAT DAY BELIEVED THAT HE WAS NOT OUT .THAT WAS THE ONLY " HITCH " OF THE MATCH .

Thereafter there was another instance for the Indian cricket team to see a batsman out, RUN-OUT in  both the innings of the Test match and it was Parthasarthy Sharma who was run out for 51 in the first and 49 in the second of the New Delhi Test against West-Indies in 1974 which India had lost.

In the annals of Ranji Trophy, in 1974, in the semis against Hyderabad, Rajasthan were 0 for four, all the four batsman run out before they won the match beating Hyderabad to make it to the finals where they had lost to Karnataka by 187 runs for Karnataka to win it's first Ranji Trophy .

English Tail Wags To Poke India -:

Throughout in this series whenever the Indians got some chance to reprieve itself, the English tail wagged and it poked India to the hilt and made them the NOUGHTS.

It happened in the FIRST Test where John Snow scored a 73, it happened in the second Test where Peter Lever scored that 88, and it happened at the last Test where Richard Hutton scored a 81 . The English tailenders with no repute for batting made themselves the TOAST and the TALK of the country at England and  also here at India.

India in return scored a 284 with Wadekar (44), Sardesai ( 54) , Solkar (44) and Engineer ( 58) helping India to score that amount of runs. At one stage of the match India were placed at 125 for five, and it was as if it was all over for India. However Solkar and Engineer added 97 for the sixth wicket to steer India upto 222 when Solkar was out. Thereafter Venkat (24) and Abid Ali ( 28) added a valuable 48 runs to take the score to 278 when both departed one after one .

Pic - :: Chandrashekar leads India amidst the packed pavilion gallery to pavilion after his 6 for 36

Obtaining a crucial lead of about 71 runs England started their second inning with Chandrashekar to completely make them a RABBIT first, then a BUNNY-RABBIT, and then a LOST CHARACTER for all to twist them and twill their history – sending them back to the hut for 101 with Chandra claiming 6 for 36 and England leaving a victory margin of 172 runs for India to score.

India’s Strongest Weapon-::

It is said that Chandra due to his bowling analysis of 6 for 36 was the WEAPON of India in that Test match and had it NOT been Chandra it NEVER would have been India. However it was NOT.

U Tube - :: The Entire U Tube Of Chandra's bowling where he claimed 6 for 36

THE WEAPON OF ALL THE WEAPON WAS EKNATH SOLKAR. His catches, especially the catch of Allan Knott that he got of the bowling of Venkat and the RUN-OUTS that he created TWO in the second innings of the match were the DIFFERENCE and he was the WEAPON-IN-CHIEF of the arsenal that India carried. But because of Solkar and his fielding, and without his acrobatic acts on the field to catch those one’s and effect those run-outs,  INDIA WOULD NOT HAVE WON THIS SERIES AND THE OVAL TST AGAINST ENGLAND AT ALL.

Pic - :: Solkar catches an unbelievable miraculous catch to send Allan Knott back to the hut.

India And Eknath Solkar Tie A “ KNOT ” With The Destiny At The “ Oval ” -:

That catch which Eknath Solkar took to oust Allan Knott of the bowling of Venkat, actually , these kind of catches are NEVER the catches at all. It was that Solkar made it and converted it into a catch . The next day all the English Newspapers described that catch with a SLUG and CAPTION saying that India And Eknath Solkar Tie A “ KNOT ” With The Destiny At The “ Oval ”

After India had beaten England, Mr Raju Bharatan put the same caption and the slug with the same headlines in the ILLUSTRATED WEEKLY OF INDIA  of the the issue in the month between August 24th 1971 to the first half of the issue of the month of September then. That issue of the Illustrated weekly sold like a HOT-CAKE at India and the picture that I depict here is the clipping that I maintained it with me from that day to this before I made a photo of the same from a studio. This photograph is infact the LUNG of the annals of Indian cricket, the HEART being the photo of Salim Durrani bowling Gary Sobers in 1971 at the Port Of Spain for ZERO which brought India the victory .

“ WITHOUT HIS EFFORT ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE CATCHES THAT HE TOOK AND THOSE TWO RUNOUTS, THERE WAS NO CHANCE THAT INDIA WAS GOING TO , OR INDIA COULD HAVE WON THAT SERIES ”   .

India’s reply -:: Slow And Steady Wins The Race

Required to get about 172 runs to win this match and the series, India had about 120 minutes of play on August 23rd 1971 and the full day on August 24th 1971. Hence the time was never a factor as that was at Lords in the first Test then.

The approach was of the two batsman out in the crease, one would have to play the role of an anchor while the other would score. This was the order of Ajit Wadekar and this the Indian team did bat  appropriately in the manner that could be termed as PERFECTION.

This was evidently seen when Gundappa Vishvanath went in to bat. He completely anchored the innings playing for about 175 minutes ( Two Hours and Fifty Five minutes) facing 171 deliveries ( 28.5Overs ) and even Dilip Sardesia who batted for about 175 minutes ( Two hours and Fifty minutes ) and had faced 175 delivries ( 29Over roughly) .Dilip Sardesai hit 4 boundaries in his innings and Vishvanath hit only one to jump from 29 to 33 and he left only when two runs were required for the win .

This TORTOISE CRAWLING but a PAIN STAKING batting by them were actually that made all the difference. No DOUBT it is said that - ::

““ PAIN IS BEAUTY AND EXTREMELY PAINFUL IS MOST BEAUTIFUL…… NO PAIN NO GAIN . ….. “”

As again it was the doubly-bubbly failure of Ashok Mankad and soon Sunil Gavaskar too followed the suit. Gavaskar was out for a DUCK and Mankad again failed with the bat. It was 19 for two. However this time around it was Ajit Wadekar and Dilip Sardesai who took the charge and at the end of the day on August 23rd 1971 India were placed at 71 for 2 with Wadekar batting on 45.

Pic - :: Ajit Wadekar plays an lofted shot of Peter Lever  to the boundary as Allan Knott (wk) and Richard Hutton watch the shot .

It was a REAL pain to see Ashok Mankad failing one after one in the six innings that he played in this Test series, yet he was continued. It would have been the wisest of the wise to have given Kenia Jayanthilal a chance atleast in the last, or else it would have better if Buddhi Kunderan could have been in the side atleast ONCE for the last to open for India. The resultants would have been absolutely different. However all the pains that the Indian openers gave, at last turned out to be the greatest gain as India won the series because of the resistance from the STOLID and SOLID middle-orders.

August 24th 1971-: The " FATHOM " AND THE " PHANTOM " PITTED AGAINT EACH OTHER

Needing another 101 runs to win with eight wickets in hand , India started disastrously with Wadekar run out for 45. It was England all over with the overcast conditions and the ball swinging like the pendulum forming the " ARC "   like the  SHAPED OF THE FRUIT- BANANA ,  for the English bowlers to put pressure on India. The swings that the English bowlers especially Richard Hutton and Peter Lever put were too much to munch and relish - for those were  a kind of DEATH that the Indians had to FATHOM  with, but the PHANTOM which the Indians were with their imaginations, with the bat put at REST, all the plans that Ray Illingsworth and England carried.

Pics - :: Ajit Wadekar is  run-out  at the score of 76 .John Snow removes the bail

Infact being a left-hander Ajit Wadekar was playing very gloriously in the innings. All the incomg swing deliveries of the English right hand bowlers were met by and with consummate ease by the   left handed Wadekar .He was clifting those deliveries of his hips-toe and the feets  were paddling like the feets of the DUCKS under water .Such was the efficiency with and by which he compiles those 45 runs at the end of the play on August 23rd 1971. But his immediate run-out the next day completely changed the mind set of the India batsman .

India soon struck to the point that STICK TO THE WICKET AND THE RUNS WILL COME

AUTOMATICALLY. They played the deliveries on the merit and with the MEAT of the bat. The shots-UPPISH were cut off as in those Englisg conditions the ball when it rears up ought to be played uppishly but the Indian till they reached 150 runs did not play those shots at all and these frustrated the English bowlers.

Pic - :: Dilip Sardesai plays a shot on his knees of Norman Gifford to the picket as Allan Knott and Richard Hutton watch anxiously

Sardesai and Vishvanath added 48 valuable runs to take the score from 124 after Wadekar had left the innings at 74. He had scored a 45 and he was very fluent till the moment he batted. Ease, confidence and full flow of the strokes which he displayed gave enough indication that he was enough to finish it off, but that run-out was a sort of a curtain and that prompted the Indians to change the aptitude and stick to the wickets to accumulate those runs.

When Ajit Wadekar was out, the score was 76 for three. For some time India was under the session of wait and watch and let the proceeding be taken at the hand when England would falter a bit. That patience at last paid the dividends.    It was 124 for 4, that Sardesai and Vishvanath added, those 48 runs, in terms of the partnership, and   with Sardesai gone scoring a neat and a well played 40. He had scored a 54 in the first. Then it was Engineer along with Vishvanath who took the score to 170 before Vishvanath departed at 33 .

Pic - An artistic typical  uppish cut of Norman Gifford by Vishvanath over the slip region

In between 124 to 134 there fell a wicket of Eknath Solkar who was promoted in the batting but this time he failed with a DUCK being his scoring partner. Engineer displayed a remarkable cricketing sense to anchor the innings from one end. Knowing the English bowlers by the palms of his hand he took the centre stage and the charge to score a well defined and a very efficiently stroked geometrically correct hits to remain unbeaten with 28 to his credit.

Those 91 Runs between the “ S-V-E ”  -:

During that period of the time there at England a MECHANICAL machine by the name of S-V-E was manufactured by England and it was this machine which was installed at almost every factories of England. This mechanical engineering machine carried out the mechanical operations at England at almost every factories where the mechanical system of manufacturing were the process

The “ S-V-E ” ie, the Sardesai, Vishvanath-Engineer  machine of India did all the mechanical cutting, shaping, milling,  and putting  it to the size to shape the product which was the ultimately shaping the  Indian victory – and that they did in style without using any oils to prevent the friction or to deshape the product ie , the Indian victory.

Pic - :: Farokh Engineer plays a full blooded controlled shot during his innings of 58 as Knott watches.

Farokh Engineer who stroked a very efficient and a perfect fifty eight in the first , once again rose to the occasion to score a neat and a geometrically perfect unbeaten 28 in the second. He infact gave the final shape to the innings by completely anchoring one end beside scoring of the loose deliveries. He played a masterful innings , full of matured and controlled strokes, to completely take out the match of the grip of Ray Illingworth and England.

India needed only two runs with four wickets remaining to complete the sweep and when Abid Ali hit that Square Drive of Luckhurst to complete the formality .

Pic - :: Abid Ali Square Drove Brian Luckhurst Zooming To Fence And The Players Rush To Pavilion After That Shot Of Abid as India had " FREEZED " England

INDIA HAD WON IT’S FIRST EVER TEST AT ENGLAND AND HER FIRST SERIES AT ENGLAND TOO. …..

It was a dramatic turn with Solkar actually doing it for India in the entire series and in this Test. His 3 for 28 in the first innings when he bowled, his 44 in the first innings adding a priceless 97 with Farokh Engineer, and his catches in the second aided with the TWO-RUN-OUTS that he got for India while fielding actually was responsible in an big  manner for this Test win but it was Chandra whose MAGIC with the ball, especially the wicket of John Edrich in the second which the English media had described it as – A “ GIFT ” FOR SOMEONE YOU LOVE  were the reason for India’s magnanimous win. It was also Vishvanath who except ONE uppish stroke completely anchored that innings helping India add those 91 runs partnering, FIRST, Dilip Sardesai with whom he added 48 runs and then Farokh Engineer with whom he added those 43 runs in and at the last made all the difference.

Vishvanath played for 175 minutes facing 172 deliveries without hitting a BOUNDARY at all, till his  individual score had crossed 25,  to score those 33 runes and his staying power at the crease went in a long way to help India to score those runs that made all the difference between the two teams .

Well today it is FIFTY YEARS that India celebrates that infamous victory- a GOLDEN JUBILEE to say. Of that team Ashok Mankad, Ajit Wadekar, Dilip Sardesai,  Eknath Solkar are no more with us. That who were in that team but did not play in that Test match, Pochian Krishnamurty and maybe D.Govindraj are also not alive today.

Some “ INTRIGUE ” Of This Test series -:

Pic - :: John Snow Pushing Sunil Gavaskat In A Fit Of " RAGE " To The Earth

1)      . At Lords :: Sunil Gavaskar in the second innings from the non-strikers end set off for a run, and John Snow too ran for the ball on the pitch to stop that run. Gavaskar was in his area of batting Zone while running but Snow had to cut through that area to stop that ball and avoid taking that run. A furiated John Snpow pushed Gavaskar and brought him down to earth .John Snow was dropped for the next Test as punishment.

2)      Gala Dinner Hoisted By The Queen-::  During the Lord’s Test, the Queen invited the Indian team for the dinner. She raised the TOAST and she first went to Venkat thinking that he was the Captain of the team. RAISE THE TOAST, SKIPPER she said, CHEERS FOR INDIA and she gave the goblet to Venkat. “ MADAM – I’M A PURE BRAHMIN, said Venkat, and I DO NOT DRINK. SORRY FOR THE Same HE SAID ” .P at came the reply by the QUEEN- What is a BRAHMIN . The entire Indian team was SILENT.

3)      3). The Indian Team Was Not Happy With The Umpire’s Decision To Rule Jameson Out-:: In the First innings, Johhny Jamesom was run out by Chandrashekar in an unusual manner. The drive of Jameson hit Chandra’s finger when he attempted to stop that one and it ricitiated to the wicket .The bail was dislodged and from the appeal, the Umpire raised his finger. Jameson was declared out but there were as many as six Indians who believed that Jameson was NOT-OUT. This was published by the British media the next day in their newspaper and this picture of Johhny jameson was later published by all the newspaper that covered cricket all over the World.

4)      4). Solkar and Engineer-: When Solkar took that catch of Allan Knott of the bowling of Venkat, he could not bear the pain and the necklace that he was wearing, the pendant had pierced his throat. It was deep and very injurious. He had fallen on the MAIN PART and was breathing for his life. Farokh Engineer was stunned and was all in fear. He felt Solkar was as good as dead. To make it sure he PULLED Solkar hard by his main part. Solkar only screamed. When Wadekar asked him to behave, he , ie, Farokh Engineer just said him- PARTNER, MAI USKAY MARAY BADAN PAR JAAN DAALNAY KA KOSHISH KUR RAHA HOON. Zinda Bhi Hai Kya , Deknay Ka Pata Karr Raha Hoon.

5)     5). .    . Pizza, or Idli - : After Chandra took 6 for 36, Wadekar just asked him- TELL ME CHANDRA, WHAT DO YOU WANT. Captain said Chandra, either a plate of IDLI or a plate of PIZZA. That is it, nothing else, nothing more.

6)     6).  Any Regret, Oh!! I Wish If …. . ? . - : Sunil Gavaskar during the interaction session with the Queen, during the dinner , when the Lords Test was on ,  was asked by the Queen- ANYTHING THAT YOU WISH TO HAVE. Gavaskar replied-  WISH I HAS SALIM DURRANI AND M.L. JAISIMHA BESIDE ME GUIDING ME ON THIS TOUR. I’m MISSING them very badly.

7)      The Queen had heard all about Gavaskar’s 774 runs with a batting average of 154.80 runs per innings at West-Indies before this tour.  She very badly wanted to meet him and see him who and how was he . Gavaskar was missing these two players very badly on this tour. On the previous tour of West-Indies, it were the two who guided him and tutored him HOW TO ADAPT AND PLAY NEATFUL INNINGS WITHOUT ANY MISTAKE. Sadly the two did not meet the runs at West-Indies, with a GREAT gay and were dropped for the English sojourn.

8)     7).  In the second innings at the Oval- SURPRISINGLY, B . S . Bedi was given only ONE over to bowl .

Well , that is it and That sums it all.

Regards and Thanks
