All About Indian Badminton
Indian Badminton now after winning the THOMAS CUP for the
FIRST time has made the people and the media to talk about it and write about
the same. This was India and her team of
the players at their best to win the championship.
The THOMAS CUP is the SUPREMACY of the WORLD BADMINTON Championship, for the
nation that wins it and India now has won it for the first time ever since it’s
inception and that too beating the MIGHT of Indonesia who infact are the
factory of producing the Badminton players.
It indeed needs to
write all about the glory of Indian
Badminton which I write here in short. Here in my write upp I’m NOT going to
describe any players about their quality or anything as such but all about
their performance and achievement.
The anecdotes about
the same are illustrated here in terms of the literature or maybe the words
that could describe their achievement that the Indian Badminton could be proud
of.
The First
Tournament - ::
The FIRST ever
tournament was the PUNJAB STATE TOURNAMENT which was held in 1929 FIVE years
before the conduct of the meeting of the Badminton Association of India which
conducted the first National badminton Championship in 1936 at Bombay then.
The First To Reach
The Finals Of All England-:: Prakasnath Does It For India
It was Prakasnath, then , a 27 years of age from Lahore Punjab
which was then undivided India who made it to the FIRST ever finals of All
England Championship for India on August
1947, just two days before the nation secured her Independence. That was the
FIRST in the history of Indian badminton that an Indian by the name of
Prakashnath had made it to the finals. He had ost to a Dane in two straight
sets in the finals.
Pic - :: Prakashnath , Indian Badminton Player on the left seen after losing the All England Finals in 1947
The entire story/episode of that tourney is jotted here in
my blog page BHATTACHARJEE SHYAMAL
Blogger, and one can read that.
Infact Prakashnath first made the headlines in 1938 when as
a young teen of 18 years he won the All India Hard Court Tennis Championship
that was held at Lahore and he again went onto reach the Quarter-Finals of the
All England Badminton championship in the same year. He was and is the FIRST to
make it to the last eight stage of the All England Badminton Champion from
India. That very year Illyas Ghose made it to the Quarters of the Wimbledon
Championship losing the the ultimate winner Fred Perry in four sets. That set
the tone for both Badmnton and Tennis for India in the annals of the world
sports, and in 1936 India had won her THIRD
consecutive Olympic Gold in Hockey.Thus heralded the spurt of the Indian sports
in the world.
First National
Champion- ::
It was Vijay Madgavkar , who won the FIRST National Badminton
championship in 1936
As far as the team was concerned the Inter state Badminton
champiuonship for the first time was held in 1944-45 which Bombay then had won
it.
Most National title-::
It is shared between Prakash Padukone and Syed Modi. Prakash
Padukone won his first ever National Title in 1971 at Vijaywada wwhen he was
only 17 years of age when he defeated Devender Ahuja by 15-12, 13-15 and 17-14
.He held that till 1979.
In 1980 it was Syed Modi who beat him in two straight set at Vijaywada again, and kept that belt with him till 1988 .Thus both won it for the most number of times with both the jewels of Indian Badminton winning it for NINE consecutive years.
It was so intriguing that while Syed Modi kept on winning
the national Championship in India, Prakash kept on winning the World
Championship and other notable championship held at the world at various place.
This kind of an INTRIGUE in Indian Badmnton was so unique that this never has
happened in the world at other country that a Runners-Up goes to win the
International medals while the Winner and the Champion of India in Badminton,
finds it hard to win any major title at abroad. However Syed Modi made the
amends when he won the GOLD at Commonwealth Games in 1982.
WORLD RECORD ::
Most Number Of Shuttle Used - ::
It was again INDIA and the Indian soil that created that
RECORD. A total of 182 SHUTTLES
were used in the 1986 National in a complete game that was played between Syed
Modi and Vimal Kumar which Syed Modi won it by a score of 15-12, 15-12 then.
Most Doubles Title
In Indian national badminton Championship-::
Leroy D’Sa won
SEVEN DOUBLES titles in the Senior National Championship and captured 14
finals. He partnered Uday Pawar ,Pradeep Gandhe , Sanjay Sharma and Rajeev
Bagga for the same.
U.Vinod Kumar won
five national titles with five different partners, Prakash padukone, Uday
Pawar, Vijaydeep Singh , Bhushan Akut , and rajiv Bagga.
Now the scenario moves a bit further with some difference
when the ladies too ought to be given that corner and limelight. When I talk
about the women folks, the name that automatically comes to my mind are
Madhumita Goswami Bisht, Kanwal Thakur Singh Pannu, Ami Ghia, to start with and then there would be the
likes of saina Nehwal, Aparna Popat and P.V.Sindhu. Let me start with the names
like Madhumiota Goswami Bisht and start with her recaords-::
Most Titles In
Nationals-::
Madhumiota Bisht who started playing her first National in
1984 totally had dominated the Indian ladies section in Badminton and she
before retiring had won 28 titles, That
includes every title in the Singles, Doubles and the Mixed doubles. At the age
of 36 , partnering P.V.V.Laxmi she won the doubles at Kochi.
State Championship
titles-::
In the State championship held by the different state,
Radhika Bose of Mumbai and Seema Bafna of Madhya Pradesh are the only players
to have won the FiVE titles in a single state championship.
Hence we see that in the Nationals and the state Championship, there have been a single player in the singles and a common player in the doubles that always ruled the wave in Indian badminton. Mostly it was the era of Prakash padukone ( 1971- 1979 ), Syed Modi ( 1980 – 1988 ) and it was at times Suresh Goel or Dinesh Khanna in the sixties and not to forget Nandu Natekar in the fifties. That was Indian badminton for you in the nation and within the country.
A little ought to be
mentioned about our players performimg in the Internationals and there it was
ofcourse Dinesh Khanna who was a Civil Engineer employed with the Indian Oil
Corporation at New Delhi.
The First Indian
To Win The Asian Badminton Title-:
Pic - :: Dinesh Khanna
Dinesh Khanna in 1965 defeated a Thai player in two
strainght set at New Delhi to win the first ever Asian badminton Singles title
for India.
First Asian Games Medal-::
It was in 1974 at Terhran when the Indian team won the
BRONZE medal in the team championship .The team had Prakash Padukone, Partho
Ganguly, Suresh Goel, Dipu Ghosh , Romen Ghosh, and Iqbal Moindargi to assist them for the
same.
They again repeated the feat in the 1978 Asian games At Bangkok
with Prakash Padukone, Partho Ganguly , Syed Modi, Leroy D’Sa, among the notables to
lead that charge .
First world Cup title
For India-::
Prakash Padukone won the Alba World Cup Singles title in 1981 defeating Han Jian of
China 15-10 , 18-17 .
First ever Medal
At The Commonwealth Games-::
Dinesh Khanna won a BRONZE
at Kingston, Jamaica in 1966.
First ever
Commonwealth Games Gold - ::
It was Prakash Padukone who beat Ray Stevens of England to win the GOLD for india at Edmonton. Syed Modi repeated that feat again in 1982.
First ever Thomas
Cup Title-::
India won her First ever Thomas Cup title in and on May 2022
beating Indonesia by 3-0 in the finals.
First
Participation In Thomas Cup Games - ::
India first
participated in the Thomas Cup team competition in 1948-49 when they lost 2-7
to Canada.
Highest tally At
The Commonwealth Games - ::
At the 16th
Commonwealth Games at Kuala Lumpur in 1998 ,India’s 14 member team had won four medals ….. they won two silver and two
bronze. …..
First At Olympics
- ::
Dipankar Bhattacharjee, Vinod Kumar , and Madhumita Goswami Bisht, qualified, for the inaugural Badminton Olympic Debut competition at
Barcelona in 1992. Dipankar made it to the last eight then.
First Uber Cup International Debut-::
India made her FIRST Uber Cup international debut in the
year 1956-57 and India had lost to Malaysia by 3-4.Uber Cup is the symbol of
SUPREMACY for the WOMEN WORLD BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP
Padma Shri-::
Meena Shah is the FIRST ever Badminton player to have been
conferred with a PADMA SHREE award. That was in 1977.Prakash Padukone amongst
the Men was the FIRST ever to win that in 1977.
First Arjuna Award-::
Nandu Natekar was the FIRST ever Indian Badminton player to win the Arjuna Award from the fraternity of Indian Badminton.
Indian Badminton has always been divided into era's. We have had the Prakashnath era from 1938 to 1948, then we had the Nandu Natekar era from 1955 to about 1965. It was the Suresh Goel, Dipu Ghosh and Dinesh Khanna era from 1965 to about 1971, when Prakash Padukone took it in 1971 and had that under his belt till 1979.It was again Syed Modi who took it over in 1980 and kept in with him till 1988.
For after that we had the Dipankar Bhattacharjee and Pullella Gopichand and their era from 1992 to about 2002 and now we would have the era of Lakshya Sen , from now to about 2032 I guess.
That tells you all about the Indian Badminton .
Well that is in nutshell and in short I have written with all statistics and record about Indian badminton and I hope this would make an interesting reading .
That is it
Regards and Thanks
