Shocking and nerve shattering stories and
incidents have been a every day case in the scenario of the Indian politics ever since 1984 when Madam Indira Gandhi was
shot dead.
Revenge and a kind of a mental attitude which
would nerve the nation and make them to go senseless has always been the case
whenever a revengeful attitude would take place in the form of some kind of an
incident which actually would be a national crime- but the political cover and
the influence of this nation would make them go without anything or any law sending them to the gallows.
One such incident which completely broke
all the shackles of the system to cover up the most heinous episode that took
place in this country was the “ AJMER – GANG – RAPE – INCIDENT ” of 1992 and in which about 300 school and college
going girls were trapped by those who could not control their LIBIDO and took
the help of the Muslim clerics as well as the Congress party members from
Ajmer, to completely threaten them, then make them to fall onto their feet
dancing to their fancies and whims and raping them atleast three to four times
and in some caseds even more than that to send them to a world from where they
would not be able to come out of it.
Many it is said went absconding, many it
is believed comiited suicide and those who could not do that, of the girls and
the clooegiates, would not open their mouth for anything as they were afraid
that their family members would be
killed or they would be metted with the same fate. Many in fears did not open
their mouth even when they were dragged to the court.
It
Happened At Ajmer – The “ HOME ” Of
The Dargah
Ajmer, home to the Dargah of Sufi saint Khwaja
Moinuddin Chishti, is still haunted by a 1992 case. Now, this case
and its subsequent fallout will be depicted in the upcoming film Ajmer 92,
set to be released on July 21.
If my memory still serves me right, it was the
present Chief Minister, Mr Ashok Gehlot who was at the saddle of the state of Rajasthan, and he was the one who completely to save the face of the Congress ,
both at the national level , and at the state level covered it with a non-
removing lid and threw the spanner at every place possible to cover up this
case and made it to be a forgotten case, lest a journalist who was in
friendship with a local photo studio who would take out the photographs of the
girs/collegfiates, showed him as to what was happening and that journalist blew
up the story which burned the entire nation of the rage and the ferocity that
would come out of it, but the Chief Minister, then, whose name I have mentioned
here , took the centre stage to cover up the hullaballoo
Systematic Blackmail And Sexual abuses -
::
The case involved the systematic blackmail and sexual
abuse of hundreds of girls at the hands of powerful,
politically well-connected individuals, some of whom had ties with
the Sufi
Dargah in the town.
The case came to light after a local journalist, Santosh Gupta, reported on it in April 1992. Santosh had a friend who ran a studio at Ajmer.
The girls/Collegiates, who were raped or
who were lured to meet the ones at some undisclosed destinations, was used to
take out the prints of the photos that showed these girls/Collegiates were in
an non compromising positions, and these
photos were shown to the ones who would fall into the trap as a victims, who
would be then black-mailed, and would be raped without any human feelings and what was more – IT
WAS ALL THE MUSLIMS LOCAL POLITICIANS , GANGED UP WITH LOCAL MIGHTS OF AJMER ,
AND THE ONE’S FROM THE DARGAH OF AJMER.
Some court cases surrounding the incident
are still ongoing.
Detail Of
Abuses Stories Brought Out By Santosh Gupta - ::
Gupta’s story detailed a cycle
of abuse carried out over the course of multiple years, ending in 1992. School-
and college-going girls were lured to remote locations, where they were
repeatedly sexually assaulted by one or many men.
The Cyclic Chain Was Created By The Victims - ::
According to the police, one
girl , who generally would be the victim, and who would be tortured and threatened
after she was raped, would be used to lure another friend that she would have
to call her as a friend, would be used to lure in her friends, and so on –
creating a widespread cycle of abuse. The girls were then all blackmailed into
submission and silence using their explicit pictures that the rapists clicked
while committing the crime.
The crime came to light when the photo
lab, where the exploitative pictures were being developed, leaked some of the
photos. Santosh Gupta broke the story for local daily Navajyoti News along with blurred-out
pictures of survivors that he had managed to get a hold of.
The accused and the court cases
These kind of the most dastard acts when committed, the ones who do it
are mostly the powerful ones with mountains of money, muscle – powers and with
all political influences In this case many of them were political clouts with
enormous strength in the local area and with almost all the influences that
they had from the root level to the national level of Indian political
scenario, then.
After a lengthy investigation, a total of 18 men were charged, some of them from families of the influential Khadims, who serve at the dargah and identify themselves as descendants of the original followers of the Sufi saint.
Gupta notes that it was the clout
that these men enjoyed – and openly flaunted – that helped them in trapping
their victims. These men would first groom and then prey upon young girls. It
was reportedly Farooq who first trapped a girl from Sophia Senior Secondary
School in Ajmer and took obscene photos of her. He would later be declared
mentally unstable in the courts.
in 1998, a sessions court in Ajmer
sentenced eight men to life imprisonment but the Rajasthan High Court, in 2001,
acquitted four of them. In 2003, the Supreme Court reduced the sentences of the
other four convicts, Moijullah alias Puttan, Ishrat Ali, Anwar
Chishty and Shamshuddin alias Meradona, to 10 years. All tjhese mentioned here were very close To the late Rajiv Gandhi , who had brought them to the Youth Congress wing and had made them very powerful by every means. Six of the men
are still facing trial and only one accused, Almas Maharaj, is absconding and
is believed to be in the US. The CBI has issued a red corner notice against
him.
A continuing ordeal for survivors
Once details of the case became
public, Ajmer found itself on the verge of chaos. Protests shut the city down
for two days, threatening to turn communal since most of the men accused were
Muslim and many victims Hindu.
However, even as the trials
began, a majority of victims turned hostile. While the police suspected that
there were between 50 and 100 victims, only a few came forward to depose; and
fewer still have stuck to their statements.
“
Unfortunately many of the victims who appeared as witnesses turned hostile and
one can appreciate the reason why they did not want to depose against the
appellants as that would have exposed them as well, and would have adversely
affected their future life,” noted
a 2003 Supreme Court order in this case.
The Social Stigma - ::
Such has been the social stigma around
the victims, that even institutions where the girls studied were looked down
upon, author Anuradha Marwah, a former Ajmer resident who has written a book on
the case .
He wrote and he covered this case in an
manner that very few, inspite of receiving the death threat and in spite of his
family who were under the noose of the gun shots and could have been killed at
amy time, dared the fieriest of the fiery death that he could face, went ahead
to write a book on the same.
His mother was a Principal of a school
from where about 100 of the girls were meted the fate that I have described
here. She completely in a stage of mental instability came to her housie after
attending her daily course of duties at the school, to completely break down
mentally to describe actually why was she in this atate of concern. What she
narrated completely took awy the life of her family members and the doctors who
treated her to stability.
Santosh Gupta blames the ordeal that victims faced (and are still facing) on the approach of the authorities in the case. Right from the start, the police, on the insistence of the political cout, led by Mr Ashok Gehlot, focused more on preventing what they believed would lead to a “ a law and order situation ” as a result of the scandal, and would completely uproot the Narsimha Rao’s Government at the centre, rather than ensuring justice for the victims, he said.
First this AJMER CASE and now the RED DIARY- both the cases have been difused and dissolved by the same Chief Minister, who perhaps is fighting his LAST battle of his political career which is surely going to entinguish his political road and it’s map after this rajasthan election of 2023.
